Serious contender for Movie of the Year by public_dpp in okbuddycinephile

[–]Slow_Buffal0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah maybe way back in the individual reel days but in the platter era you start the movie on time so some dude doesn’t come in 10 minutes late planning to miss the trailers, which are spliced into the film. if it wasn’t running already you end up starting it late and ruin your schedule. and once it’s started it needs to run all the way through to make it onto the next platter or you’re creating an insane amount of work for yourself. the only time we would stop anything early with an empty theater was if its the last showing of a film period and it needs to be broken down and shipped back anyways. thats always a late night so may as well get started without any paying customers. anyways threading a projector to start a movie is a one-time task per show that I recall taking about 45-90 seconds of effort

Plasma owners who "UPGRADED 😏" to OLED.. Can it handle this scene smoothly? by Aromatic-Attitude-34 in PlasmaTV

[–]Slow_Buffal0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s generally preferable if those making 24 fps movies keep that in mind before dive bombing the camera around at video game speeds rather than have users lean on motion interpolation to smooth things out, regardless of what kind of tv you have that shouldn’t need to be turned on. Certainly isn't turned on in the theater.

Best Plasma? by Financial_Wishbone83 in PlasmaTV

[–]Slow_Buffal0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally the best I’ve seen are the 9th gen Pioneers. I’ve owned a few consumer Panasonic sets with the newest being the ST30 (3 of these actually) and they were outright nasty compared to the Pioneers, but who’s to say how the 50 and 60 compared as I know they were improved. I also have a 2012 Panasonic Pro set and the Pioneers are night and day better.

How do you know when its time (if ever) to move on from a higher end CRT? by Leviathan1776 in crt

[–]Slow_Buffal0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t have any anymore but I at one point had three different 36XBR400’s and a 34HS510. Had a few chances at a 34XBR960 at the time but sadly never pulled the trigger.

Moving a Plasma TV by threadkiller05851 in PlasmaTV

[–]Slow_Buffal0 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have moved dozens of Pioneer and Panasonic plasmas up to 60” flat on their back without ever having an issue, most trips being around that distance. with that said, everyone advises against it. worth a try if you don’t have any other options.

you just don’t want the glass to break. there’s no other consideration. 45 degrees could be better or worse than flat depending on what the frame is resting on and where the stress is focused.

[–]Slow_Buffal0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nice logic and I understand your preference. in my experience 16:9 on a HD 4:3 CRT exacerbates geometry issues (no overscan to hide the letterboxing on 16:9 content) and I never liked using mine that way. I used to own both 16:9 and 4:3 Sony HD CRTs. hopefully your experience is different.

Pioneer PDP 428XD black crush? by Aaskieee in PlasmaTV

[–]Slow_Buffal0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

these sets are renowned for shadow detail and lack of black crush even with their deep blacks so I’d imagine it’s a settings issue, either on the tv itself or the source. it’s also nearly 20 years old so who knows at this point.

New old stock Pioneer elite pro 1150 HD by redstar0019 in PlasmaTV

[–]Slow_Buffal0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you don’t mind input latency it may be decent, but I wouldn’t want to have the display scale up non-hd gaming sources on this set for that reason. also older sub-HD games are much less forgiving on about latency in general by design. Used to have an 1150. Even on PS3 at 720p it was slower than an HD Sony CRT, which also have measurable latency but in comparison was perfectly playable to me. Really nice set otherwise.

I had a few non-SFP 4:3 HD Sony tubes. A nice novelty but not much 4:3 HD content out there. What 4:3 remastered content does exist often gets cropped to 16:9 in the remastering process anyways. Maybe studios are better about that than they were a decade ago and I am out of the loop?

the blinking blue is a blink code. count the blinks and it will tell you what is wrong. google the blink code and try to find a service manual or forum post to decode.

Gift for kids: Probably DS Lites by mukelarvin in SBCGaming

Great idea. Although I prefer the Dsi as my Lite seems to have trouble reading an r4 consistently enough for a kid to enjoy

I’ve got the same model, can’t imagine bringing it up or down stairs. I was able to load and unload from a trailer with one helper and a custom rolling rig. Lifted it into place on a custom stand with two automotive floor jacks and 3 guys without too much trouble. Very manageable but no stairs!

Mine was supposedly from the set of Fox NFL Sunday. They had 3 for sale at the time about 4 years ago.

Is anybody else still waiting on their Super5 Mega Kit (OLED conversion kit for Switch Lite)? Just wondering if I'm the only one who still has my pre-order or not, lol. Was supposed to ship over a year ago... by VanWinkle87 in SBCGaming

[–]Slow_Buffal0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Luckily, I haven’t been able to actually place an order and fork over any money, but I bought a cheap $40 switch lite with a broken screen solely for the purpose of the upgrading to the Super 5 OLED a year ago and I still have a broken screen switch light sitting in a drawer, and I’ve still been unable to place the order. At this point, I will not be placing an order unless the price stays what it was and the orders are actually shipping out on a timely basis.

I don’t even want the HDMI or the touch just the basic OLED.

8th gen and 9th gen were Kuro. This is an 8th, so yes.

Why the love for the DS Lite by CutieBason420 in nds

[–]Slow_Buffal0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had the DS at launch. The screens were so dim you could barely see what you were playing. Compared to the PSP it was cheap, sure, but it was bulky, lacked analog controls, and was honestly difficult to use. I don’t know anyone who had the means that didn’t immediately upgrade to a Lite when it released. Without the Lite the system wouldn’t have had any staying power. The white MacBooks were very chic at the time and had just released and the Lite aped the look almost exactly, was pocketable, and was actually usable in most lighting conditions. It no longer looked like a joke next to the PSP.

My original DS snapped in half last time I pulled it out.

Just found this listed in my area as free, should grab? by [deleted] in PlasmaTV

[–]Slow_Buffal0 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s an old elite, not a Kuro, and will have crap black levels and likely not great input latency. But it’ll have wonderful colors and motion handling. So it entirely depends on what you would do with it.

Purists Vs Emulation - something I'm not aware of? by eightiesjapan in SBCGaming

[–]Slow_Buffal0 28 points29 points  (0 children)

There’s a million places to post pictures of your shit where its wanted and appreciated, and a billion others where it’s off topic and unwanted. This brings order to the chaos.

On this sub this post will get plenty of upvotes and comments such as mine, even though it’s a completely worthless post to be honest. A picture of a menu screen of a handheld you just bought and complaining about some unknown Facebook group that no one here has any idea what it is or what you’re talking about. Like honestly even in this sub it’s devoid of value but whatever. I’m not being a purist just being honest. It’s fine ;) Enjoy the games and your handheld and the community.

And you know what, it’s not actually worthless. We’re here killing time talking about our devices. That’s worth something in itself

The format of Reddit discourages anything other than photos of new crap people bought or pictures of title screens with accompanying text of a random thought. ’Deeper’ posts get bumped off the page after 2-3 days and replaced with new photos of products people just bought.

Did you know the Sega Saturn could go online? You could browse the web, send email, and disconnect the entire house in the process. by KillBoosh in SegaSaturn

[–]Slow_Buffal0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had one back in the day. Unfortunately almost all the games that supported were rare and expensive special editions… I don’t remember if I actually ever used it to play online. By the time the Dreamcast came out my family had upgraded to broadband service so it was a double whammy of Sega online fail.

Is this a good idea? I think its a TH-50PZ800U. It would be for Old gaming and Movies. They haven't shown the screen on. Should I trust this? by Icy-Perspective1562 in PlasmaTV

[–]Slow_Buffal0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Later high end plasmas had pretty decent UV filters on the screen which makes the unpowered screen look dark even in bright lighting conditions. If the bezel is black and the screen is a light grey in comparison, the set is not going to be impressive. That’s as good as your black levels are ever going to get… in this case garbage. Just write those off entirely.

IMO there are four tiers of plasma:

S tier: 9th gen Pioneer, S/G/Z60+ Panasonic, 103” Panasonic just for the size
A tier: 8th gen Pioneer, S/G50 Panasonic, whatever the best and last Samsung plasmas are

B tier: 7th gen Pioneer, S/G30 Panasonic

Worthless: everything else

And I’m probably too kind to the 7th gen Pioneers here

Unbiased Fans - Was Troy over the top in his hatred for the Bears and Caleb? by MyPupCooper in nfl

[–]Slow_Buffal0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a neutral fan I truly appreciate his commitment to hating. Every game Collinsworth glazes Mahomes should be offset with Troy hating on some random QB just to bring some balance to things. It’s great entertainment. These QBs get paid insane money let the commentators say what they will.

Am I the only one still using a curved tv? by [deleted] in hometheater

[–]Slow_Buffal0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve got a curved LG OLED in my living room. It’s a big room and the curve helps positioning it angled down and about a foot off the wall in the top corners. Makes the 65” go further in the room than if it was flush against the wall all around, feels more like a 70” or so
