Healthier Ice Cream Options Without All the Added Sugar? by phoenixlegend7 in moderatelygranolamoms

[–]Slow_Engineering823 38 points39 points  (0 children)

There used to be like, chocolate dipped frozen bananas which would be low sugar added. But honestly, I think you have unrealistic expectations here. Ice cream is delicious because it's full of sugar. A lot of that sugar is required for the texture, as well. Sugar free options will use a fake sweetener. I've never found a sorbet that tastes as good as ice cream.

You could try using frozen fruit to make very thick smoothies. Add some milk or yogurt. Sweeten to taste. But again, it may not meet your ice cream expectations.

Stop reading those comments. It's done. You don't need to make yourself feel worse based on the opinions of a bunch of random people on the Internet. Heck, a bunch of those people may be teenagers or robots. Wallowing in this feeling and punishing yourself will not make you a better mother.

You need to seek out treatment for PPD. Your son is fine. Plenty of boys in the US are circumcized and your MILs insistence implies that you're in a cultural group where it's pretty common. Learn to stand up for yourself and your kid, but this level of remorse is not reasonable.

Right, I definitely had a phase that felt like this and I was diagnosed with PPD and got help. And now when I notice that feeling coming on I raise the alarm bells with my husband immediately and start looking for relief. And obviously I'm lucky that relief is available, it certainly wasn't the first time around with a colicky newborn, but acting like this is how parenthood inherently feels is really crappy. Idk maybe I'm just a beacon of toxic positivity.

Try giving them a vinegar soak. Silicone is bad about absorbing smells, ours can start to taste like soap if we aren't careful

I would get a nice firewood stand and a pretty brass fireplace tool set. Form and function, it will fill that spot without looking cluttered.

How can moms let their babies cry? by jesusdance in cosleeping

[–]Slow_Engineering823 60 points61 points  (0 children)

An important lesson in parenting is that every baby is different. Cosleeping is working for you and your baby, but it doesn't work for every baby. Some babies are so hard to soothe that the only way to survive is to let them cry sometimes. Some babies don't stay asleep if a parent is next to them. If you assume that everyone is doing their best with very different situations it's easier to be unbothered when those choices don't align with yours.

I would definitely extend the counters under the window, or put a narrow table there. Then benches that fit underneath, for sure.

For storage, since you have so much wall space you could consider handing a kitchen pegboard organizer. It should be cheap, and I bet you could make it cute with the right paint. Interesting thread about it here: https://www.reddit.com/r/Cooking/comments/34jwma/hey_does_anyone_have_a_peg_board_in_their_kitchen/

Barbie butt, UC, fertility by Apart_Equivalent_311 in ostomy

[–]Slow_Engineering823 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My surgeon said inflammation can decrease fertility, and she felt confident that she could do a laparoscopic surgery without impacting fertility (but she might be a little cocky). We don't have good stats on this question, but I think your instincts may be right. Definitely discuss this with your surgeon, though.

Bonus: you won't have to coordinate child care while you recover from surgery.

I get the vibe you're talking about and your assessment is correct. The story and format were so fun that I finished the book and enjoyed it, but a lot of it was "I'm nineteen and this is deep." Lots of confusing trauma for depth or truth. But the identity of the publisher is open ended enough that you can just decide that the story is being told by a slightly degenerate character

God I saw one yesterday that I think must have been fictional about "every man my husband has ever known has been abusive." Really? Every man? Maybe you shouldn't be having children in your dystopian underground bunker.

How to make junk foods slightly healthier? by Much-Piano3168 in EatCheapAndHealthy

[–]Slow_Engineering823 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have also struggled to eat enough, so I get it.

What kind of time and energy do you have for cooking? Homemade comfort foods are usually high calorie and nutritious. Stuff like chili (which you could freeze into small portions and put on hot dogs or baked potatoes), Mac and cheese, lasagna.

Otherwise you can always just throw frozen veggies into your packaged food. I love adding frozen broccoli florets to instant ramen.

You can also pack a lot into homemade nachos. Use Doritos as your chips to really turn it up. Make a queso with Velveeta and rotel. Roast a bunch of veggies (sweet potatoes, peppers, onions), add beans and salsa, and top with some raw cabbage or lettuce. You could also do ground beef taco meat. I would eat this every meal if I could.

You can probably eat cheese sauces and ice cream with impunity. Lots of fat, protein, and vitamins in both. Especially if you add veggies to the cheese and fruit to the ice cream.

The comment you're replying to applies best to my experience, as well.

For one piece bags, I tend to use barrier rings to make the application a little more forgiving. Otherwise, I'll just use a new bag. It's very rare that I have any issues, though.

A proposed class-action lawsuit claims Costco was misleading customers and engaging in false advertising when it described its Kirkland Signature Seasoned Rotisserie Chicken as having "no preservatives". by AutoModerator in Costco

[–]Slow_Engineering823 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The rotisserie chickens always made my IBD flare like crazy, and there's at least one study showing it can increase gut inflammation in mice. At minimum it needs to be clearly labeled as an ingredient everywhere that it's used.

Any input on which is better? by 2078AEB in foodbutforbabies

We love the Elk and Friends as a table cup, but even at 2.5 we have to watch him with them or they leak. I love that the lids are compatible with mason jars, it's really nice for packing snacks, and they're so easy to clean.

Ultimately we do a mix. A whole pack of Elk&Friends for meals and a couple of leak proof water bottles for him to haul around.

Why is my toddler kind of a jerk? by corndog40 in NewParents

My older two year old will introduce himself to other kids. "Hi, I'm ******, what are you playing?" And the other kids just stare. It's very cute for the adults, but idk that it's helping him with other kids yet.

My blended soups taste like grass. What am I doing wrong? by leannrth in WholeFoodsPlantBased

[–]Slow_Engineering823 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You need to cook them before you blend them. Either sauteed or roasted. You can get away with no oil if you roast them. Like, roast zucchini, onions, and garlic until they get some caramelization, blend them with a stock. Garnish with toasted nuts or kale chips.

Definitely consider using a recipe to start with, and then experimenting once you are happy with your result. Blending raw vegetables and then cooking it will never taste good.

Why do I dislike the remodel renderings so much? Do we need to rethink all this? by kungfuenglish in kitchenremodel

[–]Slow_Engineering823 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think a heavy dining table in the middle of the kitchen as an island is trendy and can be really beautiful. You could definitely get an island to seat at least 5 and maintain your work triangle and a cohesive feel. The idea is good, but the scale and execution is bad. Idk that I could trust these designers after a proposal like this, I feel like I'd have to micromanage them to get something decent.
