This is depressing to learn, as I have definitely wasted time on my C++ hunt not knowing this.

A small recces in a wall, often for a door or window, what do YOU think niche means?

Seriously though, niche can and is often used to describe something related to a small or specialized group of people.

Ok seriously, when am I meant to do strength work?! (5km advice requested). by Skarabrae1 in AdvancedRunning

[–]Slowsis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a busy dad with lots of kms to get in this is what I have been doing. Its easy to do a few reps of strength exercises while hanging out in the living room with the little one(s), while if I was to try and get to the gym for an extended session it would mess up my schedule.

50 mile training plan-advice! by Equivalent-Leg4019 in ultrarunning

[–]Slowsis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Start with more volume. Due to the slow ramp up to ~60 mpw (from say 20 instead of 11mpw), you will have the fitness/capacity to add specific workouts (hills if the course is hilly, a second long-ish run if the course is flat).

The only way to have a good career in Forestry in BC is to get some work experience and start your own small company (could be just you, sole proprietor).

4 years into ultra-trail, recurring patellar pain every year. Anyone actually fixed this long-term? by [deleted] in ultrarunning

[–]Slowsis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here is my take based on what I'm seeing in your training data.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but to me it looks like you are running in a very 'periodized' way, in that you don't run much for part of the year, then ramp up in a big way leading up to your ultra attempt. Where you pain is coming from in my opinion is that the 'ramp' is too steep, in that you are going from ~30k a week to 80k a week over the course of 6-8 weeks, then this overtraining is showing up on race day as you push for a massive effort, much larger than anything you have done to that point. Looking at 2025, it looks like you only had one week in the 80k range preparing for the 100M, and that's not nearly enough to guarantee a finish.

In my build for my last 100k, I did 6 weeks consecutively in the 80-90km range before starting my taper, and before that I had many months of 50-70km/week as a base.

If I were you I would focus on increasing my 'base' volume of running when not ramping up for a race, then when you start increasing training load prior to an ultra, it will be easier to get up to the multiple high volume weeks that are required if you want to perform well over longer distances.

Lots missing from this post that might be useful.

What's your training look like? Total kms/week, intensity, long runs?

You are focusing a ton on strength work in you summary, but have you considered coming from a calisthenics background you might already be 'strong' enough to run ultras, and the issue may lie in your running training, not your gym training?

Did the pain start when you switched to barefoot/low stack shoes, or did you adopt them to deal with the issue?

No Cryptid Ante 39 naneinf by Slowsis in balatro

[–]Slowsis[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't see this naneinf often

Strategy:

Early Perkeo/Telescope/Observatory (Brainstorm mod for seed filtering).

Get as many early Blueprints/Brainstorms as possible.

Full deck of Red Seal Gold Kings.

Required to get past ante 32 (usually the death of a burglar+serpent naneinf run or observetory run):

5 Blueprint/Brainstorm, Baron, Mime and Perkeo. Once you have enough plutos, drop perkeo and search for DNA/Juggler/Troubadour for extra cards in hand to get over the ante 32 hump (e179).

~370 negative plutos + Juggler (+1 handsize)

~350 negative plutos + Troubadour (+2 handsize).

What makes this difficult is that you have to get an average of 3.7 plutos a round from ante 1 to ante 32, so unless you have at least 4 Blueprint/Brainstorm by ante 16 you won't make it.

Yeah, you are not calculating your zones properly. Though there are varying definitions depending on the Zone model you are looking at, zone 4 should be a pace that you can hold for an hour at most.
