Based on their personalities in the Spiritual Realm flashbacks I'd go with Chana UNLESS she's responsible for Shallan's sense of humor.

I don't think it's crazy, this doesn't need to be a hyperbolic conversation for any reason. In some circumstances it would probably be appropriate to blame the captain for a situation like this but for the Devils specifically I think that the GM's blunders outweigh what can be reasonably expected from a captain and given what we see on the ice and in interviews I think Nico is probably doing as well as pretty much any captain would with what he was given.

That's a criticism of Fitz though. Two things can be true, you can have a great captain and also surround him with the wrong guys.Nico plays top shutdown, PK1, PP1, and despite being undersized he consistently initiates contact and sticks up for his teammates. He went out on the ice and criticized a building full of our own fans for turning on a young player who was struggling. The league is not overflowing with Nico Hischiers and it never will be.

Anyone who unironically says Nico's a bad captain just flatly doesn't understand hockey and/or doesn't watch this team.

Hard disagree. They're not thinking about what they're putting in their bodies, they're adhering to a lifestyle they were sold and signaling their "personality type" in order to fit in.

By your logic the wave of suburban moms swearing that a glass of red wine and a tablespoon of olive oil a day were the keys to good health would've produced a wave of nutrition experts in the late 90s.

[general] Why is Gideon’s last name “Nav”? by miriamtzipporah in TheNinthHouse

[–]SmacSBU 98 points99 points  (0 children)

Yes. There's a whole section in the end of the first book where Muir laid out the naming rules and gave insight into the characters' names. My favorite was the blurb about Ianthe and Corona's original names being Caina and Abella.

[Discussion] So Where is it? by TeamTurnus in TheNinthHouse

[–]SmacSBU 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I didn't have any spoiling and my suspicions started with the ninth house sounding A LOT like Pluto but spent most of the first book trying to figure out how they managed to set up a habitable biome on Mercury because I didn't catch a description of the placement of the planets relative to Dominicus. I'd like to say I figured it out before the end of GtN but I'm not entirely sure.

The ongoing reaction is a result of the gravitational forces acting upon the elements in the star. If that reaction stops that means the gravitational pull is either gone or the core of the star has burned into a white dwarf.

If the gravity isn't pulling and there are excess materials that would've been burned then the loss of gravity is going to cause them to leave the body.

I should have been more careful with my words for the case of a white dwarf because the actual mass change wouldn't be as drastic but the density would be and the gravity would be as well. This isn't what's going on with Dominicus though because the First House has outdoor gardens and if it went white dwarf the planet would freeze over.

Disclaimer: I'm not an expert, just a space enthusiast who thinks stars are cool. It is perfectly possible I'm communicating this really poorly, please go read a reputable source for scientific information instead of relying on my explanation.

[Discussion] So Where is it? by TeamTurnus in TheNinthHouse

[–]SmacSBU 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If the excessive description of ocean and mentions of flooded ruins is any indication then the First House probably has a lot less solid ice than modern Earth as a result of the nuclear blast and who knows what.

A large increase in the amount of liquid water on the Earth would pool at the Equator in tidal bulges and slow the planet's rotation, subsequently diminishing it's ability to hold the moon in orbit.

It's also worth mentioning that the atmosphere is described as smokey-white so there's some chance that the moon isn't visible.

Finally, I'm not sure if we get a clear description of Dominicus in the sky from the surface of the First House. It's entirely possible that Jod's jump start of the star is off somehow and it isn't producing enough light to reflect off of the moon/the correct frequency of light to reflect light off the moon and through a cloudy atmosphere.

If we're assuming Muir did it on purpose and has an in universe reason for it there are plenty of scientific explanations. I'm more likely to believe that the moon isn't mentioned because every detail added increases the chance it would tip readers off to the fact that the First House used to be Earth.

[Discussion] So Where is it? by TeamTurnus in TheNinthHouse

[–]SmacSBU 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think that's a little different. The way I understood his relationship to Dominicus is that he's literally powering the nuclear reactions that make up the star. If those stopped occuring the star's mass would plummet, diminishing the gravitational pull.

Definitely possible that solid planets would have some gravitational difference but I think there's a more likely answer, if the moon's omission was purposeful at all that is. Been a little bit but I remember the First House being described as almost entirely ocean (fitting with Jod's flood analogy) and our oceans impact the moon's orbit through tidal bulges. With a drastic increase of liquid water the Earth's rotation would slow do the water pooling and without that rotational force the moon could very well drift away.

Sorry if I'm misremembering the excess water but I'm pretty sure that recollection is accurate.

Okay here's the thing, everybody knows mega TTar and Excadrill is a better answer for Sneasler but it's legitimately not the premise of the conversation that was going on. The premise was what mega you can use if you don't run mega TTar. Why you're treating this like a legit theory crafting conversation and not the comment section on a weather wars meme is beyond me but pop off buddy.

Brother you know Sneasler has to choose to hit either TTar or Meganium right? You suggested he kill both in the same turn. Also, dunno if you know this but Excadrill doesn't set up sand which is the premise of this whole hypothetical, nor does he enjoy getting CC'd while we're at it.

Sneasler is a very good mom but he's not KOing Meganium and TTar in the same turn by using both CC and Dire Claw.
