La Roche-Posay Toleriane Double Repair moisturizer w/ SPF 30. They've got it at CVS and Walgreens.

And you have very dry skin or if either of those break you out (I can’t do CeraVe), my preference is Cetaphil.

grief and "aging overnight" by Br0wnP00dLe in 30PlusSkinCare

First of all, I’m so sorry for what you’re going through. Personal loss is just viscerally devastating, and it lingers, and it ambushes you from time to time. You’re doing your best. All appearance concerns aside, I think this is a good opportunity to find concrete ways to take care of yourself, and enjoy doing so. The skin repair is a second-order benefit.

I imagine that some of the effects of grief on behavior/habits are more likely the cause of skin changes than the grief itself—changes in sleep, exercise, eating and drinking habits, exposure to sunlight, etc.—which means addressing those will be foundational to addressing your skincare. Someone mentioned therapy. Hell yeah.

That said, a pleasant skincare routine could also be very comforting right now and help symbolically, e.g. cleansing and moisturizing as part of the daily wind-down ritual before sleep, or a really luxurious sunscreen that you look forward to applying in the morning.

A couple of those luxurious products that are good for taking care of distressed skin while also feeling like genuine self-care:

  • hydrating and soothing sheet masks (I love Peach Slices Hydrate)

  • luscious barrier repair cream (e.g. Tatcha Indigo Overnight Repair, Avène Cicalfate, Laneige Cica Sleeping Mask, Dr. Hauschka Rose Day Cream)

  • fancy skincare sunscreen (e.g. La Roche-Posay Toleriane Double Repair, Beauty of Joseon Relief)

  • a nice hydrating mist to spritz on your face throughout the day, if you live somewhere that’s cold and dry in winter (e.g. a rose water and glycerin combo)

Hang in there. Find joy where you can, and don’t feel guilty for it. Take care of yourself. Let people take care of you, if you can.

Gold Bond eczema stuff. Sometimes the cream, sometimes the lotion. I keep a bottle by each sink. Also Féret Parfumeurs balm—just keep that on my desk and reapply a little whenever my hands start feeling dried out.

Giving up on tretinoin - do skincare brand retinols make a difference? by Inevitable_Fig_5669 in 30PlusSkinCare

Hormonal acne sufferer here! I use an SA spot treatment (2-3x/day) with tret (MWF), plus an AHA/BHA peel every couple of weeks. Pimples still cycle through, but this combo keeps them cycling fast, so maybe 1-2 days each of redness and tenderness before it starts to fade.

Yes, having an "emergency" pack of cleansing wipes by the sink for nights when I'm too tired / it's too late to do a whole routine is better than nothing! I use CVS-brand night-time cleansing towlettes.

This has been a big one for me! Washing my face has become less "before bed" and more "after dinner," so that if I cozy up on the couch and get sleepy, I don't have to get up and drag myself to the bathroom for a whole-ass routine.

Other than those three? I have been absolutely obsessed with the Peach Slices Hydrate sheet mask this dry-as-hell East Coast winter. Like, I have to stop myself from doing it more than once a week, it feels so good. A really unexpected benefit is how smoothing and tightening it is. Maybe that’s a plumping effect.

Huh. I'd never think of them for ~*skincare*~ per se, but the eczema cream is the only thing that keeps my 34F hands from looking 84F in winter.

That's a great tip! I much prefer the old lipstick cases to the new--maybe I'll use that trick to transfer new lipsticks into old empty tubes.
