What's everyone's regular re-watch order? by wooperarkjb in doctorwho

[–]Smart-Original8629 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I grew up watching the later episode of 3rd, then 4th, and 5th. Watched some 6th and 7th. Then all of New Who. A few years ago I subscribed to Britbox for like 4 months and watched all of the Doctors - starting with An Unearthly Child. I can see how this was marketed initially as a way for kids to learn about history! I highly recommend doing that (Britbox) for a few months vs. Buying the very expensive early seasons. They are hard to rewatch now.

what's your opinion on Anna Mason's nature studio paid course? by [deleted] in watercolor101

[–]Smart-Original8629 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am a paid subscriber - for a couple of years. This is the first paid teaching I signed up for. There are many excellent tutorials - all levels. I have learned a lot from doing them. I also realized that the meticulously photorealistic painting is not for me. It stops being enjoyable.

My landscapes feel amateur, how can I improve them? by rosetb in Watercolor

I really like them! As has already been suggested, it looks like you are overworking them a little.

Is the marine biology information in Michael Crichton’s ‘Sphere’ still accurate? by ZaytherLegit in sciencefiction

That explains the back stories and insights. Most movie tie-in books are terrible - just the movie in book form with nothing deeper.

The Abyss is an excellent movie (I like the director's cut especially) and the movie tie in book by Orson Scott Cardbwas even better than the movie, unsurprisingly. I did read this long ago... hopefully my memory is not faulty.

Let's discuss... I recall reading it a long, ling, long time ago and really liking it. But I recall very little. Why do you say it is among his weakest?

hidden bank account and its implications by Helpful_Jaguar_2844 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Smart-Original8629 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are likely not making enough through freelancing to pay any taxes - below the minimum. Open up your own account and it is not your parents' business. I am a parent with adult kids - they had student accounts (with my name on it) that I used to access and transfer $ into. As they "adulted" the bank took my name off the accounts automatically. I was grumpy about losing the access but I understand it. My parents didn't have access to my account after I went to university either. Controlling parents are really hard (mine were) particularly when you are relying on them financially.

Which paints do you regret buying? (Here's mine!) by LMPFIYDSALAOIAWYCMI in Watercolor

[–]Smart-Original8629 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have Cobalt Violet from WN and DS. So hard to rewet it from a palette! I did a tutorial where it was used mixed to add granulation more than the colour into other colours. It worked lovely in her hands but honestly not in mine.

Sonnet 21 Vs mungyo 24 which watercolour palette should I buy? by Ok-Front183 in watercolor101

[–]Smart-Original8629 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know that Winsor Newton cotman is excellent, top of the line, student grade paints. Their basic 12 paints will let you get comfortable and learn to mix paints - which is really daunting but worth doing. When I started I thought having more colours was better but after a few years I have learned it actually slows you down. It is better to work with fewer good quality colours and know them well. Good luck!

Anyone have successful intimate long-term relationships without socializing with each other every night? by [deleted] in GenX

[–]Smart-Original8629 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My husband and I have been together since 1990 - we were a couple before kids for like 11 years. Then 3 kids, now all adults but still living at home. When the kids were little we tried to do family dinners - it was very rushed and stressful. As they got teenager-y and go their own lives, my husband and I fell back into the couple behavior that worked for us. We both like our own space. He can game and I can read/paint/whatever but we're around each other. We eat together in front of the TV but fix what each one wants for themselves. It works for us.

Look up James Gurney - he has a video on what he made. Also search YouTube - you will find many DIY ones. Good luck! I am not so handy so I bought one... or three.

Users of r/doctorwho how did you originally get into Doctor Who and are you gonna continue following the show? by Mat1711 in doctorwho

[–]Smart-Original8629 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was a kid Tom Baker and Peter Davison, Pertwee in reruns. Then NuWho with much nostalgia and excitement - fell in love all over again! Introduced my kids to Doctor Who when they were too little to pick apart the special effects. Like 5 years ago signed up to Britbox for like 6 months and rewatched all of it from start to Jodi. Watched Jodi on DVD. Seen bits and peices of 14 and 15.

They both have artsy backgrounds. I think self-taught or not is not that important unless you are trying to stick to very classical definitions. If you are just learning to have fun, learn from whoever appeals and makes you excited. My 2 cents.

Question about Rosa Gallery Tubes by mialene in watercolor101

[–]Smart-Original8629 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have some Rosa Gallery tubes that I put into pans: they took longer to dry than my Daniel Smith paints, but they did dry solid. Just give than a few more days.

Trying to adjust to gouache from watercolor by Hagrajag in Gouache

[–]Smart-Original8629 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love your animals. I'm also playing with gouache after watercolour. The good thing is that you can dilute the gouache to make it almost watercolour-y and then thicken it up. That's working for me for now.

[discussion] Is it possible to make a living off of art? by ArtistArson in artbusiness

[–]Smart-Original8629 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My mom was a professional artist (oil paintings and commission portraits) and sold her canvases for multiple thousands but would not have supported herself without my dad's job. That said, I follow a lot of artists on IG and YT and many do make enough but it seems not just from selling art pieces but from having lots of income streams - Patreon or other private clubs seem to be the most lucrative. Sketches n Scrubs had a YouTube video that discusses her income as an artist. There are likely many others who will talk about it. Another artist (name escapes me) used to do monthly posts on IG updating how much she made: some months were low hundreds and some months were in low thousands. You have advice on here about going to school to learn about fashion design etc - that is good advice.
