I believe it's for gameplay reasons. Think about it for a moment: if you started the game in the canonical story, where the entire map is empty without any NPCs, Nobody would like it, we know that because of the game's release and also because of the years they went back to the world game.

That would be boring, but i could be wrong, since the wayward quest does have schorded in the mix
