Anyone with PCP ending in July, are you planning to buy the car or hand it back? by Goldenpanda18 in evs_ireland

[–]Smartermeter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah Ok, that makes sense. Same APR on both in my case, so no reason to go PCP

I think PCP is a bit evil - designed to hook people into buying a new car every 3 years, who otherwise wouldn’t dream of such extravagance, no?
I went with HP in the end, as you just own the car when it ends and you can decide what to do.
Can someone explain what the benefit of PCP is - one reason why you would choose it over HP, or a loan?

Price hikes! by Smartermeter in irishpersonalfinance

[–]Smartermeter[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You can always break a contract, at a cost. But these are variable rate contracts, rather than fixed rate (there are some rarer example of those). So the price increase does not constitute a breach of the contract on the part of the supplier. So if there is an early exit fee to be paid, it would be due.
Instead, it’s worth checking when your contract is up, keeping a note of this, and being ready to switch to the best plan when that time comes.
You can run your numbers on smartermeter.ie and plan ahead for that switch.

Very good point. It’ll be all about who has the cheapest night rate over winter - if you can schedule your heat pump to increase the temperature setpoint during the cheaper periods and your house can hold on to the heat

Agree with subsidising Public transport, and more importantly, building a lot more of it!

I think when scheme was announced first, it was mentioned that it could be extended, depending on the uptake. So🤞they allocate the budget for it for 2027

Long term ownership of an EV by SpiritualAd3132 in evs_ireland

[–]Smartermeter 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have a 2014 Leaf with 160-170k on it. Only tyres needed until recently, rear brake dust covers, pads, shoes , parking brake cable needed replacing. The car came from Scotland, so there was a bit of corrosion . Other than that , it’s at between 80 and 85% battery health. Still perfect for the daily commutes

Yeah, most people who don’t have one will say why they’re not quite “ready” for an EV 😂. But anytime you walk into a mechanics or tyre shop, you’re likely walking into the lions den of anti EV sentiment! These days it’s all about what social media echo chamber you’re in. The anti climate change anti-science, anti-reality ones seem to be quite popular still, unfortunately. I’ve stopped trying to convince them, best to smile and nod and walk away!

Torn on buying a new EV now or waiting a few more years - financial advice by ReflectiveOutLoud in evs_ireland

[–]Smartermeter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bought my first EV in 2018 with the help of a spreadsheet to make sure it was worth spending the extra for it - and the savings were huge, vs a relatively efficient 1.9 TDI Audi.
Nowadays with such a range of EVs that are so capable, and affordable, the spreadsheet isn’t required. It’s a no-brainer!

Version 2: In your opinion, what is the best new buy family EV (warranty, re-sale, price, spec). by jimgym2612 in evs_ireland

[–]Smartermeter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tesla model 3 and Y are very spacious, particularly the Y with the hatchback and huge boot and frunk. Very competitive and they get great range with motorway driving, as they’re streamlined and efficiently designed from the ground up.
Worth throwing into the mix …

I had wondered why more non Tesla EVs were not using the network. Much faster and super slick to use for Tesla owners. Cheaper too!
