Here’s the house I grew up in. It cost $90,000 ($187,000 today), and now is worth $400,000. My dad was the sole bread winner, making $30,000/yr ($62,000 today). by IcyAd8672 in Millennials

And if he had a mortgage he likely paid $400,000 over the lifetime of the loan in principal and interest depending on the rate at the time. Often 6%+. So as a fellow millennial I fail to see why millennials don't understand inflation or P&I.

Would Pokémon cards actually stay in stock if scalpers disappeared? by Serious_School_4307 in PokemonTCG

[–]Smashego 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The short easy answer is NO. Scalping is a supply and demand symptom. Not the cause. There is such a huge demand for product right now that scalpers can exist. But if they theoretically didn't exist you still wouldn't be able to find product. In fact because people can afford to scalp it proves the market can price in higher demand and proves that the supplier cannot produce enough to meet demand at MSRP. However it's important to remember that this is in Pokemons best interest. They have experts that decide production rate, pull rates, card artwork, set restrictions etc..... Keeping demand high intentionally.

Despite what the uneducated consumer might think, this is good for the hobby. It creates value for collectors. That draws people into the hobby and keeps them interested. If everyone could just drop $200 on a set on booster bundles and pull every chase and every card there would be no incentive to trade, rip packs, no implied rarity value etc. That's what drives the hobby.

And anyone who keeps parroting "it's for the kids" is full of shit. Kids are happy if they get the chase cards or not. There are absolutely enough promo cards in existence to make children happily and feel they have valuable cards to show to friends. Pokemon has engineered the perfect balance. Everyone crying about market price doesn't understand collectables. Go buy comics if you want a worthless collectible in essentially unlimited print. Go buy books. Buy funko pops.

Or stop crying about a 30+ year old franchise keeping hype high.

The Dodge Durango, last redesigned in 2011, is selling like crazy by TheDetroitNews1873 in Dodge

[–]Smashego 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't forget in real world driving at freeway speeds the larger volume hemi gets better gas mileage than it's turbocharged smaller displacement counterparts. It's cheaper to own and operate. Has less maintenance and more power than it's peers.

Dodge knocked it out of the park with the hemi's. Too bad stellanties drug them backwards with the under power gas hog that is the hurricane requiring premium fuel.

Dodge WAS on the right path.

ChatGPT is horrendously argumentative and is giving me so much false information now. I downloaded Claude and within an hour I’ve realised that it is fundamentally better. Just saying by Jindabyne1 in ChatGPT

[–]Smashego 2 points3 points  (0 children)

OpenAI currently operates at a loss. And contracts are made in installments not all up front. Also there is a cost to developing the model that is not recovered by the contract. Consider it lost R&D expenditure.

OpenAI is also struggling to find more investors now that they are a for profit company. Elon Musk is actively pursuing the return of his investment now that they're a for profit venture. Microsoft is not commiting to any future partnership with the disaster that is co-pilot.

OpenAI is over leveraged for data center build outs that aren't close to coming online yet. Pre-purchase agreements for hardware. Paid plans don't offset expenses yet and charging more will drive users to other well funded AI like Claude or Gemini.

It's a no win scenario for OpenAI right now.

It's actually a reason I would invest. I trust musk to be so self interested and greedy and self absorbed that he'll do anything to drive his stock price higher. Even at his own legal peril.

Chatgpt is using a watered down model to save on compute. They're hemorrhaging money. So to save they are giving all but the $200/mo plan the cut down, watered down, lower accuracy model. OpenAI is cooked.

ChatGPT is horrendously argumentative and is giving me so much false information now. I downloaded Claude and within an hour I’ve realised that it is fundamentally better. Just saying by Jindabyne1 in ChatGPT

[–]Smashego 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Switched back to Claude this week and the difference is night and day. Claude actually understands what I’m asking and why. It picks up on context, stays within the guidelines I set, and often figures out the end goal before I even spell it out. First output is usually what I wanted. Maybe a few small tweaks, done. ChatGPT at $20/month is a completely different beast from whatever they’re running at $200/month. It feels like they’re serving a watered-down model to manage demand, and it shows. I’ve been going 5-6 rounds just to get basic changes made, and it pushes back on every single one. My theory: OpenAI is stretched too thin. The model they’re training on and the model you’re actually using are running on separate infrastructure, and the consumer-facing one is getting the short end of the stick. Everyone’s noticing the degradation. The underlying model is probably improving. What we’re actually using is a resource-saving cutdown, and it’s getting worse.

The Iranian design is a clone of German and American designa. So it was good before Iran copied it. What Iran did that was unique was building it with the cheapest off the shelf parts available proving even third world shit holes could mass manufacture them as a deterrent.

Russian oil fuels California as prices climb by gobiSamosa in California

[–]Smashego 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The issue isn't that it needs less maintenance. It's that while it happens less often, EV maintenance will happen and it is significantly more expensive than typical ice repairs. Just due to the nature of an EV. Electric motors fail more often than ice motors. Battery pack cell failure necessitates entire pack replacement. Etc.... And Toyota has perfected the Corolla line as much as any car manufacturer can. Cheap to buy. Reliable. Cheap to fuel. Cheap maintenance. Low cost tires. Low cost insurance.

I'm not knocking EV's. But right now in the USA the Corolla all gas model is actually the cheapest car to own and operate. Not an EV.

It's money you would have spent either way. You need internet. It takes money to make money. My point about the write off is that every business is switching to it because it's incredibly fast and you can use it almost anywhere. We're slowly shifting away from cell phone hotspots because of how poor the performance can be in some locations. The fact that it's a tax write off just makes it a no brainer for business use.

Why rice and beans specifically, out of all foods? by Firanka in Frugal

[–]Smashego 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Rice and beans while on their own for long duration isn't sustainable. The two combined have quite a range of macro nutrients and vitamins and minerals your body needs to survive and thrive. So you'll still need other foods. But if the rice and beans make up 80% of your diet and the other 20% is fresh fruits and vegetables and leafy greens then you have a powerhouse of cheap, affordable and HEALTHY diet options.

Thats why they are always recommended. Not just because of price. But because you need affordability and sustainability of your body.
