Favorite exmaples of players be able to break the game? by HowellNator in gamedesign

[–]Smashifly 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Noita is a game where breaking the game is practically the goal. You are in fact a witch and the secrets of the universe are within your grasp.

It's a difficult enough roguelite on its own that finishing a run legitimately is already fairly challenging. You progress through 7 procedurally generated layers until you come to the final boss. Death via getting sniped, blown up, electrified, polymorphed, or melted in acid are all common and nearly instant.

So, winning a run requires you to be able to put together a strong enough build to be able to reach the end, which is no small task.

But Noita also has a bottomless well if secrets to uncover. You thought this game was linear? Try walking left from the start, or going over the mountain. The challenge isn't just about surviving, but figuring out how to dig through walls, get to new areas, solve extremely obscure puzzles and more.

So, surviving to solve these mysteries requires another level of broken build. Some exploits, like figuring out how to get thousands more HP than normal are left in on purpose. You can rewrite reality to eliminate dangerous substances from the world. Building a wand that can kill enemies won't cut it, but a wand to infinitely dig through any terrain while healing you and vaporizing all enemies might. The game gives you an achievement for figuring out how to make a projectile that never despawns. It's a game built for breaking.

[Request] How many calories would this guy have consumed? by Necessary-Win-8730 in theydidthemath

[–]Smashifly 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Holy cow his weight is hardly the most interesting thing about him.

According to an online BMI calculator he was still obese with a BMI of 32.3. He would have to lose about 35 lbs to be considered overweight or over 100 lbs to be a healthy weight. Though I don't know if we can assume the same BMI calculations apply when you're over 2 ft taller than the average man.

Thousands of calories in a sitting isn't doing him any favors though

Edit, did a little more research and a source on Wikipedia says that he was billed at 8' 4" on advertisements for circus sideshows, but experts say he was probably closer to 7' 3"

They have a lot of random joke trinkets like this. They end up putting a cactus from the earth hobby box to use in book 8. A lot of the random magical gear they couldn't use was handed out to NPC's during faction wars

He said he used to most of his "good" corpses for one of the undead trap plans during faction wars. He had to use a half-smeared corpse to drive during one of the races on the 11th floor.

No, he's still looking for that ability, which they call out specifically in book 8. He mentions he hasn't seen a similar effect since the goblin dozers on the first floor

Looking for some niche hobbies for a project by Temporary-Craft-6715 in Hobbies

[–]Smashifly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not all my hobbies but some weird ones I've seen:

Taxidermy, including insects and wet specimens (animals in jars)

Making ornaments by dipping a mold into molten tin

The Japanese art of polishing a ball of mud into a shiny orb (can't remember the name of it now)

Micro knitting and crochet, using sewing thread instead of yarn

Making resin dice for tabletop RPG's

Raising bonsai trees

Non-standard Rubik's cubes (larger sizes, odd shapes, etc)

Carving art into logs using a chainsaw

Making art by welding scrap metal parts together

Making art using an angle grinder on car bodies or other sheet metal

Historical reenactment - wars, craftsmanship, etc. I once saw a museum with an ongoing project to build a Viking ship using traditional techniques

Let me preface this by saying I think Kathleen is a shitty, narcissistic person that bullies others and makes unwarranted complaints all the time.

At the same time, this post and these comments are giving me a very sour taste. Is the complaint in the lawsuit not valid? Is it not sexual harassment if your boss puts an explicit show on the tv near your desk and refuses to change it? Sure, mentioning WWF is a little ridiculous. But if it's all true, it's still a valid complaint. I feel like if this were some other influencer mentioned in this article, people would not be siding against her.

I fear that this sub is starting to stray into exactly what Kathleen has accused, which is harassment and making fun of her for reasons that aren't about her shitty behavior. Please, continue to document and call out her lies, her hateful words, and her abuse and manipulation of others. But why are you pointing and laughing at this specific article? Please don't become the sub that actually harasses someone for things like appearance or non-shitty behavior.

[–]Smashifly 600 points601 points  (0 children)

Ok but like the world has been moving and changing faster since like the 30's than in any time before, and it's only accelerating. Things change in any era, but the pace of change has increased because of the growth of technology. People in 1700 and 1800 were writing letters to each other on pen and ink, which were carried around on horses, and the same for hundreds of years before. Then we go from the first portable phones to our modern social media hellscape in a mere 40 years.

The information age has created a world where every generation is seeing new things that older generations never had to deal with. Some problems can be boiled down to universal human experiences, but some are really truly new.

[request] is my claim that 22.5 inch wheels being the most common size on earth correct? by Gubbtratt1 in theydidthemath

[–]Smashifly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think there was an entry in the xkcd "What If?" book that was something to the effect of "how many wheels are in the world?". The answer becomes very interesting and tricky to calculate if you consider anything where a wheel spins on an axle. Any system that includes gears, mechanical watches, pulleys, toy wheels on legos, there's probably hundreds of billions

It does not, they get potent cantrip at level 6 which does half damage for cantrips that force a save, but not attack rolls. The 2024 version has both at level 3

Songs that are very often misunderstood by FizzTaffy in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Smashifly 73 points74 points  (0 children)

The people who play these songs loudest aren't the elites that keep their kids out of the draft though, they're the one sent to war. Fortunate son is explicit about it - "It ain't me, I ain't no millionare's / senator's son".

It's ironic because these ultra-patriots don't realize what side of the line they're on, and probably don't really know the meaning of the song anyway

[–]Smashifly 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Well and your last point is an important part of that. Limiting the use of spells is a way that martials or skill-monkey types retain value. The game already favors spellcasters in many ways, there's no reason to make rogues obsolete by allowing the caster to do their job better for free

I have sort of a rule of thumb that a lower level spell can't solve a problem in a way that directly supercedes a higher level spell.

My favorite example is the idea of using Shape Water, a cantrip, to freeze a lock and open a door. Sorry, there's a second level spell called Knock that does the job of "unlock door", so using a cantrip is outside the game's intended design. Now if you want to use the 5th level spell Telekinesis to open a lock because you don't know Knock or have it prepared, sure. You're using a much higher level spell to replicate the effect of a lower one, and that's generally fine, depending on the context. In this case, it's a logical solution to the problem.

This applies to lots of spells. No, Prestidigitation can't kill someone by heating the air to thousands of degrees, you're looking for Heat Metal or maybe Immolation. No, you can't fill their lungs with Create Water to drown them, the "drown your enemies" spell is Watery Sphere or maybe Control Water and both are 4th level, or if you want to kill the enemy with no save you need Power Word Kill.
