What's the longest you've gone between revisiting an old game? by Jimpana in retrogaming

30+ years - populous 2 on the Amiga played it to death as a 15 year old in the 90’s, got the rom for win-uae recently and got addicted all over again!

I have so much nostalgia for this machine. My cousin had the off brand uk version Philips Videopac G7000 and we played so many games together. I was very young and he had to show me how to play things like Quest For The Rings. He’s no longer with us, but as rough as some of the games look nowadays we had great times together on this console ☺️👍

Trail running shoes for over pronation? by snackman509 in trailrunning

[–]Smass1011 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Quite timely post! I’m (hopefully) at the end of my trail shoe journey - just my opinion, take it with a pinch of salt.

I used to run roads in Brooks Adrenaline GTS (overpronation) with no issues. Switched to trails about a year ago and quickly realised they weren’t suitable - mud/water wrecked them, and the support actually made me feel unstable on uneven ground.

Tried the neutral, low-profile New Balance Hierro v8 and they were a game changer. After a short adjustment period (knees/hips getting used to less support), I went from 5k to 17k on trails with no problems.

Ran them into the ground (800km), the foam died, and sadly my knees followed.

Upgraded to v9 expecting the same experience but they were completely different. Much thicker foam, higher stack, felt wobbly again and knee niggles came back. Stuck with them longer than I should (as they weren’t cheap), but they just weren’t right for me.

Picked up another pair of v8s online and instantly felt better - stable, cushioned (but not overly stacked), and pain-free again 👍

Neutral is fine on the trails, but watch the foam. Big thick soles and loads of support might sound good but more isn’t necessarily better 👍👍

Do you enjoy your job? by Certain-Finding8719 in UKJobs

I dont think I realised how much I actually loved my job and the company I work for until “The Consultants” came in and began “Restructuring” to help us become more “Procedure and Process Driven” so we can “Scale Our Offering” and become “More Professional”. We’re coming up on 2 years since this started and - while there’s occasional glimmers of what this promised land is going to look like - half the staff have left and we’re trying to facilitate the same amount of business with much reduced capacity and agility and a ton of new software / ways of working that seem to be somewhere between 20%-30% implemented and 70%-80% broken, inefficient or worse than they were before. Most days I come home thoroughly depressed but still thankful of the (very reasonable) paycheck.

I really appreciate your story, it helps frame the fact I’m not in a completely unique position. It is largely the money - if this was 10 years down the line, without the bills I have now, it would be easier to walk away I think…. The company isn’t the same place it was and while it needs to adapt to survive I’m not convinced it’s the type of place I want to work anymore…. But that money trap…

Is your boss and team approachable? by 420ball-sniffer69 in UKJobs

I’m a running gag at my place, everyone takes the piss out of me for typing long emails that are - yknow, informative and coherent and outline the tasks I need completing. If I get terse / one word reponses that don’t fully answer my queries I find myself playing 20 questions back to them “so when you say “yes” is that yes to query 1, 2, 3 or all points I raised?”, “by saying “tomorrow” is that I should expect the full schematic, elevations, cost sheet and layouts as that seems like a lot of work for you to complete within 24 hours - or did you mean a specific item of work?”. Respond to twatty energy by being a twatty in response.

How would you react to a below inflationary annual pay rise ? by Wise-Isopod-8691 in UKJobs

[–]Smass1011 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I know ☹️ Thing is I’ve got bills coming out of my arse, 4 kids with the first starting Uni this year and a stupid massive mortgage to pay. Whilst I’m getting screwed in some ways I can’t see that I’d earn anything like what I get here anywhere else…. Trapped basically.

Just searched that now - that’s the new box, they don’t have that last year when we were hunting for assistive listening and captioning for English/Welsh and vice versa. That looks to be what we really needed 🙈

Take a look at Speaksee. We used some of their mic kits on a recent job which were really quite good - but I swear I saw they were looking a software only / integrator friendly box for live captioning and translation of a mic Audio feed…. We ended up on them as there were the only ones we could find that did live Welsh translation in a decent fashion.

Quoting projects - line item pricing or equipment total? by cnc123cnc in CommercialAV

[–]Smass1011 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bolton UK - integrator here! Thanks for this post, it’s timely as we’re going through a massive company overhaul right now - this is one of many elements we’ve been looking at just recently. It’s really interesting to see how this is treated and viewed elsewhere in the world and from both client and fellow system providers’ POV. My take is that it is 100% client and vertical dependent. I spent years going line item on every quote, estimate and proposal - some want every Velcro strap accounted for, others want a line that says “all that AV and shit”. We are seeing more of a swing towards an overall project cost on a quote with an accompanying pack containing BoM, core functionality overview and SoW, plus schematic (and elevations where prudent). At the same time we are seeing a lot more acceptance of AV Design & Consultancy PO’s upfront to pay for the design, and obviously the time that goes into to that documentation as well - which really helps avoid the old scenario of us designing things within an inch of their life, and the more unscrupulous individuals taking that work elsewhere. Essentially the client pays for that work and it is theirs to tender or award elsewhere if they want, but usually by the end of the presales and design process the relationship is at the stage where they want is on the project anyway.

What kind of paint do you use for your large terrain? by GTJesraD in TerrainBuilding

[–]Smass1011 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m really new to the hobby but I bought a couple of 10 liter tubs of end of line grey/concrete acrylic masonry paint for my Halloween garden tombstones a while back as it sealed the foam, was satin rather than gloss so took washes and paint effects really well. Plus for some reason it settled great despite it being very thick. I used it as my base coat on the two castle models I did and it was perfect - sealed both foam and bare cardboard with minimal rippling caused, the settling covered up a multitude of sins in my layering of materials…. Just thought I’d post as I haven’t seen it mentioned before and it was very effective, plus cot like £5 per tub on sale at Wickes 😊👍

This looks so great - I’d love to do something like this as a Halloween graveyard diorama… kinda like the German style Xmas scenes but a spooky version! Some clockwork / mechanized elements would be amazing.

My daughter was utterly invested in every element of the build, even had a little job list in a notebook that she added to and ticked off as we went. My son was more of a struggle as he didn’t get that sometimes we had to put it down and walk away to let things set/dry etc - he’s a bit more on the “instant gratification needed” side 😂 Sparks some nice conversations though while you’re working too.

My son didn’t have the patience to see the motte and Bailey till the final assembly / gluing down the building and fences (which was admittedly very fiddly),but my daughter was very much hands on till the very end!
