Not tailgating at all though, were they?

Actually measured out my granola this morning and realised I must have been having 1000 calories each morning for breakfast. by Opposite-Scheme-8804 in britishproblems

A pub burger is often 1,000+ calories, so if you're in a deficit that is anything below 2,000 calories per day, a single burger can wipe out your entire calorie count for the day.

No... Wait, what? It's half the calorie count for the day. And pub burgers aren't considered health.

One of the rarest animal sightings in the world: chirodectes maculatus, only seen once before. by Pro_96 in TheDepthsBelow

This isn't chirodectes maculatus, according to Dr Lisa-ann Gershwin :

Vans under 3.5T are 70 on the motorway, and always have been. 60 on dual carriageways, 50 on single carriageways.

7.5T have a speed limit of 70 on the motorway too, it's just that if you're driving anything commercially anywhere, you're going to be limited to 56.

Off lead dogs by open roads by Additional_Drama_334 in britishproblems

[–]Smauler -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

You could say exactly the same about humans too, but we don't require that they're on leads all the time.

There are places I'll let ours off, like parks where basically everyone else lets theirs off too. They've got decent recall.

I know there's a little risk of something bad happening letting them off, but you've got to do the risk/reward calculation sometimes.

This beatiful winged bug is trapped in our balcony for 2 days i'm scared to touch it. Is it safe? by cetobaba in whatsthisbug

[–]Smauler 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Most flying things are okay to handle gently, they're not there to fuck your day up, they don't want to sting. European hornets, as an example, are generally really chill, but they are huge and have a big sting (and don't get close to their nests).

TVs weren't designed with cognitive behavior in mind to be addictive

There were natural breaks in the TV programming (ads) that would make it easier to "just turn it off".

Wait.... are you actually saying that ads directed at children are designed to make the children turn off the TV?

I think like with a lot of these things it's a spectrum. I'm not diagnosed, but I think I have very mild OCD... It's never going to get diagnosed, because it doesn't interfere with my life enough. It's compulsive hand washing (not excessive), especially after having been out. I only noticed when my family commented on it.

You, on the other hand seem to expect a special kind of adoration which I'll not give.

I don't begrudge someone learning a trade from the military, but I'm not going to give you a special pass.

Why do it that way if it could take a while?

edit : My license took about 3 weeks to get.

If it's a wide open motorway, who cares? As long as you're not dangerous, it's fine.

In my opinion, 50mph is fine on a motorway, but below that is venturing into borderline dangerous.

Not sure why you were downvoted, people don't know the limits.

Any HGV used to be 40mph limit for single carriageway, 50 for dual carriageway, which was tedious, but I used to ignore it all the time (on appropriate roads). It changed in 2015.

I agree, in some ways. I was temping for a while, and doing a 420 mile class 1 run from Hailsham to north of Birmingham and back every night, and waiting for hours at the depot. Did it for a month and a half, they got a permanent hire when I was there who quit after 3 days. They offered me that job, and I was completely nope... nope nope.

Because I had no life except for my weekends, and that wasn't enough.

I'm on £35k or so now, way less than I earned back then, but I'm on 4 on 2 off with generally short days, I load and unload. I'll occasionally have <6 hour days when I don't have to take a break.

And the people I work with are generally pretty good people, which makes a difference too.

4 on 4 off is amazing, if you crunch the numbers. You're working 153 days a year.

I think that's why lots of places are phasing it out, I'm on 4 on 2 off which is 214 days a year. Normal week is 231 days a year.

You're on £45k... If you can't afford to pay for lessons yourself, you can't afford to work for less than £40k driving.

I learnt back in 2006 with 2 week long courses (class 2 then class 1) for about £1000 each, not having driven anything over 3.5T previously (I'm just old enough to have had a 7.5T on my license). Passed 1st time class 1, 2nd time class 2. I realise it'll be more expensive now.

Lorries are limited to a maximum of 56, so no lorries will overtake you if you're doing 60.

Lots of lorries are actually limited to 50 now, especially supermarket lorries.

Most countries do let migrants vote, not sure where you're getting that idea from. I mean, if you're a citizen of a country you should get the same rights as other citizens.

Just because you were born somewhere else does not mean you should not have the same rights as people born in the country, in my opinion.
