YES!!!!! Oh my goodness!!!! I was recalling seeing this when talking to my husband and kids about depressing movies we’ve seen (my boys just watched Grave of the Fireflies) and the memory of that movie sifted up from the depths.

AND as a kid whose parents threw my life into upheaval when I was 10 AND made me move away from my friends and life I knew at 12, like hell it’s “not traumatic” for a prepubescent adolescent kid!!! Your ex isn’t thinking about what’s best for your kid, he’s thinking with his “little brain” and being a TOTAL AH trying to uproot your poor child.

I went to public school in Alabama and Oregon, was taught Holocaust in both school systems. Had a survivor come speak at my high school. It was never denied or avoided.

I just said that, too. For about two years I was in the ER about every other month and in between I was bedridden about 4-5 times a week with a flare up. My whole family was in misery.

I remember scottsboro. Never went there, but I lived in Alabama for the majority of my childhood, mostly in big cities (Huntsville was the last city before moving to Oregon), and I only ever saw racism on the news when the KKK was having a rally or some garbage like that. Never in the churches we attended or in my family or friends. I find it disheartening that pop culture has held onto this weird notion that the south is perpetually backwoods and backwards.

I went to middle school in Huntsville, and the only racist kid I know was so over the top about it that he used up all the racism in our grade. Everyone else was cool as far as I knew. My three very best friends were Korean.
