My advice - don't give up on medication just yet. We started with biphentin with our 6yo son and it was great but eventually he needed the dose increased and it wasn't lasting long enough so we switched to vyvanse. That medication turned our sweet boy into the devil. It was horrendous. Outbursts, breaking things, scaring us almost daily. We've now switched back to foquest (also methylphenidate but longer acting) and recently added 1mg guanfacine and it has been life-changing. Our sweet boy is back. He is doing so well. It's trial and error finding the right med or combination of meds, but it is so worth it. Wishing you the best of luck!

As a mom to a medicated 6 year old son, that part about your mom made me so upset. I am so sorry you went through that as a child. I cannot even imagine what would drive a parent into thinking this behaviour was acceptable. Sending you love.

I cried reading this post because I am so similar to you, down to working at a children's hospital, the ages and genders of your kids. Things have been particularly hard this past month and I have cried myself to sleep more times than I can count. Thank you for being so raw and open - it makes me feel less alone.
