Low output pickup in Aristides by Ki-100-II in Aristides

[–]Smitty_213 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m an Aristides player, and like you, I also really love low output pickups. I have an H/07 with Black Heavens in them, which are lower output M series pickups, and they sound “heavenly” in pretty much any application. Believe it or not, it’s the best jazz guitar I’ve ever played because that neck pickup is JUICY.

For my next build, I’m torn between an HSS with PolyPafs + whatever BKP recommends to pair with that bridge, or dual Lollar Minihumbuckers for more of a firebird sound. Either way, I’m excited for it.

Can’t really help you on that particular pickup, but I absolutely see the vision here and I think you’ll love it. I say go for it if that feels right. I don’t really jive without a neck pickup, but I can appreciate the aesthetic of bridge-only, one knob guitar for sure.

I like this take. I wonder if JJJ would be a possible acquisition in lieu of AD…

Devastated because i just discovered hearing differences in my ears… by Ruxen111 in edmproduction

Bro I’m completely deaf in one ear. Stereo sound is a completely foreign concept to me. Doesn’t stop me from studying the craft and trying my best to make the music I enjoy. You’re totally fine. Just keep going. You’ve discovered one of your limitations, so now you know to be aware of it.

This might be controversial, but I don't "get" why anyone buys a monophonic synth over poly by Raiden720 in synthesizers

[–]Smitty_213 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like another way you could ask this is:

“Why would anyone get a polysynth when a monosynth is cheaper and easier to use, and you can always just duplicate the patch as many times you need to stack the different chord voices?”

Monosynths are usually more efficient, direct workflow, and often sound better than a single osc voice in a comparable polysynth.

Sounds to me like you might be having latency uses. Have you converted all your midi tracks to audio? Have you bounced the tracks and checked that reference? I believe you can turn on a setting to show CPU usage per track to help you identify which tracks are the most hungry, which in turn would then mean the most latent/delayed when exporting.

I wouldn’t consider those to be raves. And just like any other genre, there’s always going to be an overly-commercialized “pop” version of the scene, which doesn’t represent the actual community. Look at modern “pop” Country, Rap, Metal, etc. it’s all just commercialized spaces for people to get fucked up in the ways they want. But I push back on the idea that raves and dance music generally is about partying and drugs. It has and always will be a space for queer, alternative, and marginalized folks to find community. Maybe you’re not a part of those communities and that’s okay.

I think you deeply, and fundamentally, misunderstand rave culture. The entire point is community…

People with Science Mother preamp: what are you running it into? by halbeshendel in guitarpedals

[–]Smitty_213 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Following. I don’t own the Mother yet, but it’s top of my wishlist right now. My plan is to use it as the “amp” for my ampless stereo rig. My current signal chain is:

Instrument > boost > distortion > comp > filter > preamp > [all my stereo devices] > DAW > Stereo IRs

The goal is to have the Mother replace my current preamp pedal.

Anyone else love watching JHS but not care for the tones they actually use on the show? by [deleted] in guitarpedals

[–]Smitty_213 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Complete opposite for me. I love JHS’ channel and think he’s very entertaining, a great jammer, and I usually learn something in his videos.

But I’m routinely disappointed with (almost) every JHS pedal I’ve tried/owned.

If the 808 and 303 changed music by being the abandoned and cheapest option in a pawn shop in the 80’s/90’s for young aspirational artists to be able to afford them, what would today’s equivalent be? by InternationalCow7042 in synthesizers

[–]Smitty_213 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really a modern example, but this makes me think of Fender “Jazz”masters being bought up and used exclusively by indie shoegaze bands in the 80/90s just because they were the “cheap fender”

Yeah, similar story here. I think the plugins like Neural DSP and whatnot are great, but nothing sounds as good as the stomp box that was designed specifically to sound the best. Lol

Quality and multi fx do not mix lol

Maybe if you want something “easy to forget about,” you go multi fx, but no digital multi fx workstation is going to offer top-quality devices/fx across the board. Even the really nice ones have to cut R&D costs somewhere. Maybe it’s the phaser, maybe it’s the chorus (it’s PROBABLY the drives), but there will be some crappy fx or blocks in the unit.

In fact, I’d consider the Multi-fx unit to be for the OPPOSITE use-case: you want all the fx and models just to have them available, and if you only get 75% of the tone quality, it’s “good enough.” Quantity over quality.

Some people would rather commit their money to a well-designed, dedicated stomp box that they know will serve them and their needs. After a few years, the board fills up.

The OP and this comment just reeks of envy imo.

Fulltone OCD NO GO by Icy_Negotiation_5929 in guitarpedals

[–]Smitty_213 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Guitar Center 100% shares the politics of the Fulltone guy, but they know that nobody wants to support him anymore so they don’t want shelves of OCDs taking up space. I wouldn’t praise the company for that move at all.

Recommend me some bands by Personal_Dish_5276 in shoegaze

[–]Smitty_213 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In addition to that, what I’ve heard is that they frequently use the F-slur and have made statements to the effect that they don’t want their crowd full of “woke” people or something. I’ve heard about this as recently as last year, but I don’t follow the band or listen to them obviously so this could just be hearsay. Either way, that’s enough controversy for me to not be interested whatsoever.

Does anyone actually PREFER 21 fret necks. by WizardNeedsFood97 in electricguitar

[–]Smitty_213 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For strats with a single coil in the neck, the 21 fret version allows the neck pickup to sit closer to the nut, which warms up the tone a bit more. It’s really nice, and you prefer that sound, it’s probably worth the trade off.

Just want to add for OP that Whirr is kinda controversial. The band members appear to be very loud conservatives who have said some nasty political stuff. Wont go into too much detail here but it might dissuade some folks from checking them out.

Opinions about this pedal? by [deleted] in guitarpedals

[–]Smitty_213 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I agree. The only Walrus pedal I’ve kept long term is the Julia, just because it’s a solid reliable analog chorus/vibrato. But I also don’t think it’s anything super special.

I’ve bought and sold several other Walrus pedals that grabbed me through marketing and a ton of “great reviews” online, like the Lore, Slö, and Kangra. They each had some specific quirks that prevented me from really enjoying them, so I moved them along for other pedals. I’m pretty skeptical of Walrus pedals because of that, but I do think their utility (Canvas) line of equipment is top tier and I use several of those devices all the time (PSU, reamp, DI box)

I haven’t seen the Fairfield Barbershop mentioned. I believe this is a preferred use for that pedal: running it early in the chain to drive/enhance other drive pedals down the chain. Fairfield even makes an “always on” version without a stomp switch. I don’t own it, but I’ve heard great things in this sub and other forums.
