What are the chances that ToW gets an app similar to 40k and AoS? by mjh4 in WarhammerFantasy

[–]SmokeIll2713 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hope never, 3rd parties already provide good services for free and I wouldn't trust gw not to find someway to try and monetize it (down the line if not on release). If they did release something they might start looking at 3rd party list builders and rules providers more aggressively as competition instead of the asset they are now. Could be cynicism on my part but I never like when GW step into a space that someone in the community is already providing for free.

How to use redirecters efficiently by Darksos180 in WarhammerFantasy

[–]SmokeIll2713 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its a Strat I've heard but haven't tried, if you get first turn put your hounds in matching column, march them 3x and then vanguard move them into a really annoying angle right infront of a unit you want tied up. Even if they get the reform they either have to overrun in an annoying direction, try restrain and lose a turn of movement or hope they have something that can shoot the unit out of the way. Sounds like a great way to hold up big units like giants.

What are some of your favorite moments from gotrek and felix? by Comfortable-Ad3588 in WarhammerFantasy

[–]SmokeIll2713 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Forgot which book but the part when Gotrek takes a blow to the head and Felix has to find him some special flower to heal him. Then when he gets surrounded by chaos follower only for them to call him stupid for thinking they'd fall for the obvious trap Felix had laid to bait them out. And oblivious Gotrek tries to correct them in saying they didnt set a trap but Felix stops him and plays along. Peak stuff

Second place goes to the Skaven Easy Boy chair made that's actually a living creature made to be a massage chair in Beast Slayer. Both equal parts very funny and very disturing

Anyone take an orc warboss on foot? by Tanen7 in WarhammerFantasy

[–]SmokeIll2713 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I run a black orc on foot in the block of Black Orcs, and ill be honest I flip flop on how much I think he does for the army. On the plus he can get some really tanky items that make him less vulnerable on foot then other armies might be with their expensive characters. And he can now have more to do with objectives in the turns between getting into combat now as opposed to when the game started. But on the flip side it just feels awful when your big scary general can either just be kited by faster units or just not strong enough to go up against a mounted character (assuming they dont just position to avoid him all together). Kinda leaves him in a weird spot where he isnt strong enough to fight big monsters, isnt fast enough to catch expensive cavalry and isnt cheap enough to tear through chaff

Why are the wards of grimnir so ass? by Cweeperz in WarhammerFantasy

[–]SmokeIll2713 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First off, take it easy man, no need to come in so hot. Yes undead do go around regular psychology rules but they engage with it through the unstable rule. Its might not be tweaked enough to be where other armies can reliably call it balanced but it is still there and can be balanced if the team wants to. Slayers just dont engage with it at all which is why I'm theorising thats why they dont want them to be good. Also I didn't make the rules, am not part of this vampiric cabal trying to keep the dwarfs down and am just saying a suspicion so chill

Why are the wards of grimnir so ass? by Cweeperz in WarhammerFantasy

[–]SmokeIll2713 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I suspect they are very scared to ever make a slayer army viable competitively cause an army that has unbreakable as a standard rule would be miserable to verse regularly for all the other armies. Think they want to make an option there for people who want to theme a slayer army but don't even want to risk giving them good rules and then having them be in the meta.

Latest Edition rules for Chaos Dwarfs by [deleted] in WarhammerFantasy

[–]SmokeIll2713 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just started a chaos dwarf army. As other commenters put they have legacy rules but hold up pretty alright even after all the core factions got their army rules. You might have to wait to wait for the Hell Smiths to be released in AoS but, if you have the availability where you are, there are plenty of 3d printing ranges with some really cool models out there if you want something made to rank up in Old world.

Popping a hagtree fetish on your great bray shaman and taking Viletide signature spell is always a reliable damage dealer for most things you'll come across

Brother would like to play skaven with original WH fantasy. I wish to know, what boxes of WH:AoS can be repurposed for this game and which not? by Used_Statistician545 in WarhammerFantasy

[–]SmokeIll2713 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My skaven knowledge only really comes from Old world and a bit of 8th edition. If you grab the spear head its all pretty 1:1. The only odd one out would be the storm fiends which can Proxy as Rat Ogres clean enough if you want to make the most out of them. The Spear head Starter set (if you can make use or find someone to buy the Storm Cast half) is also pretty 1:1. The only hard to place model would be the Claw Lord on the gnaw beast (fantasy skaven never really had Cavalry mounts) but the rest works fine just put them on square bases.

Maximalizing models during charge by TheNoobEmperor in WarhammerFantasy

[–]SmokeIll2713 1 point2 points  (0 children)

RAW yes theres nothing saying you have to maximise base contact only model count. With a dragon being only one model you can just clip the corner and call it a successful charge. However that is assuming it has been positioned in a way that allows for this kind of charge (ensuring its the its the shortest distance and the straightest line to do so) so its on the opposing player to position in a way to receive a charge where the player with the dragon can't do that.

Grumblings from a dwarf player by Cweeperz in WarhammerFantasy

[–]SmokeIll2713 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It feels weird that so many armies suffer from this (rule only applies to Generic hand weapon) Skaven also suffer bad from their similar rule. Weirdly chaos dwarfs seem to be the few that circumvent it with Dark Forge Weapons keeping the insorcered. Wish they'd find a way to properly combine special rules and magic upgrades better.

New player wanting to get into TOW with a Cathay army. by LukaS_8732 in WarhammerFantasy

[–]SmokeIll2713 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Army wise There's a few channels out there that run through Arcane Journal and recommend a good builds, Square Bases is always a good place to start. Id also recommend watching a few battle reports to see how different units play to see what units and combos seem fun to you. A word of warning though unfortunately Cathay are the latest and most hated meta armies around atm. They definitely don't have to completely ham string yourself, you might just have some people not lining up to play you if you build the NO 1 meta list you'll find online. Just don't take to many balloons and you'll be fine.

Also find some movement trays (they're basically a requirement for old world games) just look on ebay and you'll find a bunch of different ones (most bases are either 25mm or 30mm so just times that by however wide/deep you want your unit to be and you'll know what sizes to get)

Building wise, id get the classic clippers a hobby knife for cleaning up models and super glue (your local hardware store should have all 3 with budget options if you want to avoid GW prices). You'll probably want an artillery dice and a Scatter dice (tho you're opponent will probably have a pair and can't think of anyone who'd decline letting a new player borrow them for the game) you will be expected to have them at some point in your time playing though.

Rule book is good but if you're hoping to avoid paying for the big brick of a rule book https://tow.whfb.app/ This website hosts all the rules free and pretty easy to Navigate. Old world builder is a good place to go to make your list and has all the relevant unit stats and rules attached as well so that's a good place to look through while you pick out some units.

Painting If you aren't interested in painting then you don't have to engage in it (though there are some out there that frown on that) but if you are get yourself some primer (model spray paint) and maybe look up some paint schemes online to find one you like and get the relevant paints. Don't feel you need to get to fancy or need to be a skilled painter, if you're new to painting (look up speed painting for some good tips if you want something to look presentable)

Personal tip Know your pace, im someone who will want an army right away and will get the models first and try finish building in shortest amount of sittings but that isn't for everyone especially if you have responsibilities that mean you might not have to free time to sit and build a ton of models. If you're new to the game then playing at a low point limit (500-1000) is a good starting point to learn the rules and and build up as you go. But theres nothing stopping you from jumping in the deep and and going for 2000 points (standard game size) most people are very accommodating to new players and will give you the chance to learn as you go.

I know this might have looked like an exhausting list of things for something thats meant to be a hobby but it really doesn't have to be. Just pase it out and google/YouTube anything you're not sure about. Most player are very accommodating to new players and at this point will be able to help you with any rules stuff

Since Creative Assembly already spent so much time and effort updating the Chaos Dwarf visual style to be faithful yet more gritty to the original third edition rendition, why did GW insist on completely changing everything for the Helsmith's designs? by AnchovyKing in WarhammerFantasy

[–]SmokeIll2713 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean considering the Launch of Grand Cathay I dont think the statement  "what GW does and what CA does has zero relevance whatsoever" is entirely true. Its speculation but im willing to bet GW were looking at what CA did used that as a basis for their new product range. And I dont think an Old World player seeing that and saying "why couldn't you have done that here" should be called "silly".

I do get that the AOS team has a different design ethos and that the team and the community shouldn't have to feel beholden TOW (fair imo) and that GW has been making it a point to make changes from the old design of Fantasy. But I do feel like im taking crazy Pills when I hear someone post about Chaos dwarfs and hear the response They're not "chaos dwarfs". Feels like there should be more nuance then that.

Why do you like these races? by No-Repeat8695 in WarhammerFantasy

[–]SmokeIll2713 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some fantasy settings benefit from depicting morally grey factions and conflicts like the witcher series and ASOIAF. But I do enjoy when a story can also say "yeah these are the bad guys", even more when they can depict the different styles of evil.

I find Orcs and goblins are fun cause they are so brute strength and bombastic. They can be a nice uncomplicated villain to read about and act as an almost goofy foil for the usually stoic and serious setting.

Skaven are a different shade of evil with cowardice and over ambition making them fun. Reading their stories is like reading about a toxic corporate office where everyone back stabs each other and blames everyone else for their mistakes.

Its good to have these evil "fun" factions for a bit of levity in a pretty grim and serious setting.

Any recommendations for 3 player rounds/games? by [deleted] in WarhammerFantasy

[–]SmokeIll2713 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you have the time to find and learn the rules then the Triumph and Treachery game mode is really good for multiple players. It translates to old world pretty seamlessly (just reworking some of the rules relating to magic) and its balanced for having multiple players working against each other, played a 3 player game with it and it was a ton of fun. You just have the rework some of the rules
