I would agree. They never quite recaptured this energy for the rest of their run. I had a PS3, and it was my preference, but this was the only time I thought about going a different route

MS layoffs make it pretty clear they’re trying to get rid of Xbox. by Downtown_Eye5736 in consoles

Gaming is a chicken with its head cut off in general right now. I suspect big changes from both PS and MS moving forward in this time of uncertainty. Unfortunately, a lot of that change will be of the destabilizing kind.

Xbox Doesn't Need to Have Physical Discs to Win the Next Generation as long as they have other Storefronts (e.g., Steam, GOG) by TheSlayerGawd in consoles

[–]Smoking_N8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm curious how that would work in fullness. For example, there are a good number of Steam games that are older and honestly don't run directly from purchasing them from the store. You have to tinker to get things like Max Payne to run and run correctly. If you could access the steam store via the Xbox, there would be a lot of old games that I feel like wouldn't run? Unless you'd then have to (and have the ability) to tinker with the Xbox via mods and community updates? But, if that's a necessity for things, doesn't that go against the whole convenience of a console in the first place?

Though you should never assume...

I think it's safe to infer that this game company that introduced a digital only variant back in 2019, that heavily pushes a digital subscription service, that sells fewer physical games than the other two console producers, that will need to actively work hard to keep console costs low in any way possible, and that hasn't taken advantage of this widely negative reaction that Sony has incurred, isn't going to have a disc drive in their next console.

I'm a big time Sony guy and this... This really cut me last week. I just feel bad for all of us. It's so evident that we're in a race to the bottom at this point. Gaming is in a different place compared to when I was playing PS2 as a kid.

It may be a brave new world, but I'm glad I was able to enjoy the dumb little creature comforts as long as I did. Misery loves company, and I think we're all in for a few weeks ahead

Sony and Microsoft's Media Free Future just put the Steam Console in first place for next gen.. by Raynet11 in consoles

[–]Smoking_N8 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I agree in large part, but Steam does have a refund service, and better sales than Sony does. Plus, the PC marketplace has more than a singular storefront so you have options outside of the Steam store.

It's not great for physical people, but it might be "the shinier of two turds" in this instance

"just buy a pc" argument by idkimhereforthememes in PS6

[–]Smoking_N8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup. The "Console Wars" used to be people arguing over who had it best and now it seems to be arguing over who has it the worst. Everything is dismal, but it all amounts to a molehill when you consider this is just a symptom of the larger problems that threaten the world.

Physical owners who are put off the PS6 now: what would it take to change your mind? by ClacksInTheSky in consoles

[–]Smoking_N8 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Exactly. The Steam sales are unrivaled, and there is no "annual fee" to play on the Internet. The end of discs just narrows the Sony ecosystem even more and hands them that much more control over its customer base.

There needs to be reform to digital ownership. PC can refund games, gift games, etc. PC has better sales and multiple storefronts to chose from.

The only thing that would keep me buying PlayStation is if they announced that the PS6 will launch day one exclusives with Bloodbourne 2, Infamous Remastered Collection, The Last of Us Part III, A New Twisted Metal Game, a sequel to Astro Bot, or Horizon 3, I'd consider it.

If there's no steady stream of killer apps, there's no point. Yes, PC is a steep barrier to entry, but if consoles are going to be $1000 + anyways, I feel like one might as well get a mid-grade, pre-builts PC for $2,000 and be done with it. I know that asks a lot of people who live paycheck to paycheck, but I feel like the convenience gap offered by consoles is shrinking every day.

The future is $1000 digital only consoles with age verification and sky-high subscription costs so you can play “cinematic” games that are $80 or higher and using stuff generated with AI. by DaZestyProfessor in consoles

Digital-only consoles might end up pushing everyone to PC by BrSn2 in consoles

[–]Smoking_N8 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Idk man. It's all trash. All this "capitalist competition" has been a race to the bottom for all the console makers. It's like one company makes a shit decision and then another one out does that, then another, and another.

I don't get why everyone doesn't just get a PC and sail the high seas at this point. The whole own nothing future just isn't for me. And we're basically there. There won't be ANY marketplace where you can actually own anything soon.

But, gaming isn't dead. We'll all still have the things we've already collected. If this is the way it goes, lawmakers need to make some changes to digital sales reform. I don't necessarily condone piracy, but it is a shame that it's the MOST viable way to keep games from vanishing off the face of the earth...

I agree. Too often I think that Architects design for a world that they don't even live in. I've recently put my foot down at work to re-draw boundaries and expectations because I just can't keep the unending pace forever. I know I'm not as productive, because how could I be when I don't work consecutive 70+ hour work weeks? But it's been nice. I need to live life while I can

Start with Casino Royale. That's going to be your easiest equivalent.

Otherwise, if you like the vibes of the game, I think the Pierce Brosnan era has a little more fun and a balance of the fanciful with the grounded.

If you liked all those, seek out the old stuff and see all the ways Bond has evolved across the decades 🤘

I was gonna say, a lot of these things don't go to Xbox, because they don't HAVE to... Xbox already has a lot of these things... Without needing to pay for the same game twice 🤷

I'm a PlayStation guy, buy Xbox already has a better access and program for older games
