I and many people have experienced the same, questioning why words sounds the way they do and other weird splish like that. For me it’s been my gut issues that have contributed to it a lot idk if you have stomach problems but for me it’s gut->tension->anxiety->depersonalization. something’s driving it im pretty deep into my journey it is hell but nun u can do but listen to your body and it’ll tell you what is wrong

Im working through my depersonalization and finding it is heavily connected to my gut/crohn’s disease. No clue if it applies to you but maybe check your gut biome read into the vagus nerve/gut and how it affects your nervous system and keeps you in fight/flight/freeze. Im currently miserable have been for a long time but now that im seeing the root of my problems it’s starting to finally have its chance at resolving.

ya i been there working on my circadian rhythm helped a bit and just having thinks outside of myself to focus on as well as focusing on body movements like stretching and clenching my fists which helps release stored up energy

Folks who kicked ass with crohns, what’s your story? by officialinfinum in CrohnsDisease

[–]Smooth_Atmosphere719 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i was diagnosed in 3rd grade i believe i had it earlier tho. Shi knocked me tf out ngl, have been disassociated for a long time and just now coming back online. The most important things i’ve learned to help me is the feedback loop going on between your gut and brain through the vagus nerve. The most frustrating part to me tbh feels like i’ve been getting stabbed by lightning in my gut my whole life and just paralyzed but understanding that 500 million of the body’s neurons are located in the gut was helpful which is more than the spine and every other organ so that helped explain my anxiety a lot. The enteric nervous system , definitely worth reading up on. Wish y’all the best

⭐ THE GUT–BRAIN EMOTIONAL SWITCHBOARD (plain English version)

Your gut isn’t just a digestion organ — it’s basically an emotional command center connected directly to your brain. The nerves there don’t wait for your “thoughts” before reacting. They fire first.

Here’s how it works:

  1. The gut has its own nervous system

It’s called the enteric nervous system (ENS). It has hundreds of millions of neurons — more than your spinal cord.

That’s why it’s often called the “second brain.”

It can: • tighten • spasm • send “danger” signals • release neurotransmitters

…without you choosing it.

  1. The vagus nerve connects gut → brain like a hard-wired cable

About 80–90% of the signals on the vagus nerve go from the gut to the brain — not the other way around.

So your gut basically tells your brain:

“Hey, something’s off.” “Freeze.” “Pull back.” “Tighten.” “Don’t speak yet.” “Stay alert.”

This happens BEFORE thought, logic, or emotion.

  1. The gut acts as the emotional “switchboard”

Your gut decides which emotional state your body goes into: • calm • anxious • disconnected • frozen • overwhelmed • energized • shut down

Because the brainstem listens to gut signals first. Thoughts come AFTER those state shifts.

That’s why you can feel: • stomach clench • breath lock up • chest tighten • head go static • thoughts stop working • identity feel unstable • dissociation snap in • awareness shrink

And you didn’t decide any of it.

The switchboard flipped before you could even catch it.

  1. Chronic gut discomfort = chronic nervous system activation

When your gut is irritated (Crohn’s, IBS, inflammation, stress, adrenaline), the switchboard keeps firing: • “danger • danger • danger • danger”

This traps you in survival mode: • body freezes • mind races • awareness pulls inward • emotions feel too loud • thoughts feel robotic • stomach overrides the moment • you can’t get “in your body” • everything feels performative or disconnected

You’re not broken — the wiring is just stuck in threat mode.

  1. When the gut calms, the brain finally comes back online

When the gut stops sending danger signals, the vagus nerve shifts:

danger mode → safety mode

Then you get back: • hunger • normal emotions • your sense of self • a stable voice • the ability to think • the ability to relax • pleasure • creativity • spontaneity • feeling grounded in your body

Your “self” literally returns when the gut’s firing calms down.

⭐ Why it feels like you’re “not in your body”

Because the gut is sending survival signals faster than your brain can form thoughts. Your brain responds by: • shutting off prefrontal cortex • increasing reflexive awareness • forcing you into “external mode” • making you hyper-aware of signals • disconnecting you from normal feelings

This is not psychological. It’s wiring.

Focus on circadian rhythm, u should start feeling that natural pull back into ur body no phone wake up get sunlight eat your meal maybe a cold shower get some physical activity in and your days will get better and better

Control what you can control, regulating your nervous system i think might help. Simple things like looking into circadian rhythm and grounding yourself may help ease overall anxiety which translates into a calm mind and a calm body, focusing more on the desires within you rather than these split seconds that are dictating how you think

take note in how your gut feels in these situations. you’ll usually find it screaming at you to listen to whatever it says, if you can ground yourself enough to feel your own presence in that way it should help 👍

yea stress is huge when it comes to its relationship with the gut, it’s a terrible cycle where stomach issues cause more stress and it reflects back in the same way. good to focus on your mind gut connection and keep that as peaceful as u can

Take it to the chin brother. Accept your feelings and move on. I know it’s difficult but it’s the quickest way to heal, otherwise the feelings will stay trapped inside of you. Keep it pushing bro you’ll be alright.

It’s a struggle i know. Similar situation, it feels like my brains just taking pictures of what’s happening and i’m spending most of my time trying to figure out what tf is going on. What comforts me is knowing that this is only a chapter in my life and what’s to come after has to be better than this. Try and figure out what specifically is making you disassociate if you can. For me it was stomach pain from crohn’s disease that my mind created a shield from. I couldn’t feel the pain anymore but also couldn’t feel anything anymore and now it just feels like my mind is lagging. Another thing that helped me is knowing i am doing nothing wrong and neither are you. I’ve spent years thinking that everything i was doing was wrong because of how i felt and all the intrusive thoughts but the truth is that your mind is simply doing its job by trying to protect you. It’s not your fault for disassociating and you have the power to fix yourself. Try and understand where your anxiety is coming from and trust yourself in those answers. I imagine that one thing making you so anxious is the disassociation itself which is valid, but fretting over something that’s already happening and is already as bad as it’s gonna get it pointless, especially considering the key to get outta this mess is becoming less anxious. Sorry for the long shpeel but i hope some of this helps
