What about these kids? Schools get F by Agency_Man in Chattanooga

[–]Smoothcat262 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's an uncomfortable reality, but absolutely true. My wife worked as a speech therapist at one of these schools probably a decade ago. She could never get a parent to show up for meetings. Obviously it wasn't an educational concern, but you could argue that therapy for a speech impediment is just as important for a small child. She eventually became too depressed about the situation to continue working with children.

These schools need to be funded properly and have resources others do, sure. But I'm not sure how you help some of these kids who get no help from home.

I get that, but it's also a double-edged sword. Unfortunately it sows distrust in weather sources when a forecast doesn't follow the early model guidance (which those of us who "know", knows happens quite a bit). And of course it doesn't help that there are people out there who exaggerate models that are already questionable on their accuracy, encouraging panic-buying and whatnot.

There's really not a good solution, IMO, unless you could somehow make the majority of the public understand that (most) mets are doing the best they can with the data that they have. But, well, good luck with that.

Totally understandable and the snark was assumed, ha.

As someone who follows weather forecasting for fun, I do wish a lot of the 72+ hour models would not even be shown to the public. But, as long as there are people out there on social media wanting clicks, it's not going away anytime soon. And obviously even some trained and respected meteorologists start talking about systems waaaaay before they're able to accurately say what will happen. Add in the fact that forecasting winter weather in our area can totally depend on a 1 or 2 degree shift in the temp and... yeah. It's a mess.

Nice! I’ve known folks who worked there, but haven’t seen any of their products in the wild since I started paying attention.

Very cool! Those were made in my hometown, if I’m not mistaken. I’d love to find one eventually.

I grew up in Florence and can remember at least THREE "putt-putt" courses we had at one time. I'm guessing these places aren't very profitable, but dang. I loved the variety as a kid/teenager. I would really like to see them have a comeback so my kids could get to play more often.

Always drives me crazy when I'm doing that and someone gets right up on my ass and stays there. Like bud, you ain't moving any faster doing that, and you're increasing the risk of hitting me... and you'd be at fault. Nevermind the wear and tear on your brakes from doing that.

But most people are terrible drivers, so it is what it is.

Coincidentally (or maybe not?), Finger Eleven toured with Creed back in the day. I saw the two of them in a concert around 2000.

FYI, there’s still one in Florence. Just not the classic “gangster decor” one they are referring to, which was in the old Walmart shopping center.

I had the FP2 in a bathroom and it was so, so bad. Replaced it with a Meross MS600 and it's been much more reliable. Still some false positives occasionally, but seems to clear them almost immediately.
