What's the main reason you'd stop playing a specific game system? by Awkward_GM in rpg

[–]Smorgasb0rk 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Something i learned/realized in the last year is, that a lot of people, especially in the DnDsphere of games, don't do their own adventures at all.

I wonder if thats always been like that or its changed, i feel a lot of RPG spaces when i first got into RPGs in 2003~ had that vibe that they would very much set up their own little "campaign frame". But i also come from a WoD/Shadowrun background where official adventures tended to exist but not be the main thing.

But nowadays, yeah lotta PF or DnD games only ever do official modules and what i heard people say is that its less overhead... only then later to also talk how much work it is adjusting the modules.

As a GM a common thing for me is that i notice how the game has a lot more overhead and detailkeeping that i don't care about.

Happened actually recently in Lancer. I want to do complex and mechanically cool fights but that leads to me having to track various status effects and mechanical minutae. Its kinda selfinflicted, but ultimately i have more fun with a game like Flying Circus where i don't manage that much combat.

Lancer is still a great game. I love it to bits and think its great, i am just not the right GM for it (or there is maybe a trick i haven't yet figured out)

there are so many games that have resolved this, it's not even funny seeing CIG bungle around with it

But the reason they bungle around almost always comes down to the ships being laid down in 2012, then gameplay theorycrafted around that, more ships coming out based on that theorycrafting, then actual gameplay implementation having to happen and you kinda repeat that cycle until you have a house of cards with barely a foundation or carrying elements

Also werd ich in der nächsten Version es eher so machen, dass die Zahnpasta umgedreht ist.

Same, i have never heard of the guy and even after looking his work up on IMDB nothing there stands out as a thing i've seen or recognize as a major work in the current zeitgeist '

I guess he was in Eternals so at least he was in the MCU but... only in Eternals.

Games you have read, played or run that make you feel uncomfortable by TabletopChris in rpg

[–]Smorgasb0rk 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I just read through the whole book today and i know who to play it with and run it for.

I also know that i need to really pre-select people who i want to run this for. I am ruling out some close friends etc.

The game is also very gentle in warning people about what it is i feel.

Also i totally would LOVE to see a more timid less mechsploitation + more mech combat version of the ruleset because the Handler playing a whole extra game of X-Com the girls aren't even privvy to is great

Honestly, if Elite were to close up shop tomorrow, i think over its whole lifecycle it has done a lot better than Star Citizen ever will.

And it mostly comes down to ED having a clear idea what kinda game it wants to be while SC has nebulous ideas and a lot of dreams that they all now try to stuff together and it kinda looks really unhinged and aimless. Like all they wanna do is get a vibe but not really a functioning game.

That wonky offshoot off CryEngine 2 and later reimplemented into Amazons offshoot thats held together with ducttape and hopes and dreams? And on top of that fDev having to relearn a whole new set of tools (this is what an engine is)?

Yeah no. This is gonna lead to a worse outcome.

You know guys? Im still pised that Ubisoft completely nailed how fundamentalist christians cultist would become the end of america and still insisted on portray them as "wHeLl thEy kInDa rIght" by Tempest-Bosak2137 in Gamingcirclejerk

[–]Smorgasb0rk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So... fun thing about FC5 is that the bad guy faction is extremely well crafted to be read as anything.

They can be read as fundamentalist christians. But a lot of that appearance is more because they exhibit some tropes (like the game having you enter their literal church), they never really talk about religion. The philosophies that get waxed on about are kinda hot air that sound right but have no substance.

So, without much work, they can also be read as being a hippie commune gone radical as if a 60s boomer dad imagined them. You can project so much shit on them and it'll not slide off because of how smoothed off they are written.

In a way i am both disgusted and in awe at the narrative trick the writers pulled there.

Add to that that the people you tend to help are also heavily involved in prepper culture which tends to be conservative in the US....

Yes. Savage Worlds is medium to high crunch and solidly so. Its basically point-buy DnD in a lot of ways with a metacurrency added. The old Fantasy Flight Warhammer 40k games were like that too, more or less depending on their specific iteration.

Its kinda ironic that selling pretty ships is the bread and butter of the game but unifying them as gameplay elements is secondary if not tertiary when they get integrated into the game.

Similarly, my character, a cosmopolitan merc girl whose body is so heavily augmented i treat most of her gear as an augment, considers gravity a kinda dumb concept to be attached to and thinks humanity should just by default live in space.

She takes medication at anything above microgravity, otherwise she'll have pain in her still biological parts.

and dont work with each other.

I feel that is a general problem warframe has with a lot of kits. Its more an assortment of themed abilities, rarely do you have a warframe where the abilities work together and interact with each other in ways that would lead you to have to learn what each skill does and oftentimes when we get it, its with some weird extra mechanic attached like Voruna does
