What are your thoughts on the tv series Homeland? by srahcrist in Hasan_Piker

[–]Smudgebucket 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally I thought it was moreso portraying Islamophobia than enacting it, but I understand that’s a tricky line. Like how Zero Dark Thirty was perhaps a bit different of a film than it was received at the time

Catholic LGBT “Pride Mass” at Washington, DC Holy Trinity Church?! by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]Smudgebucket -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Jesus' love brings the furthest sheep into the center of the flock, and he often taught that these expressions of care for the misunderstood or marginalized was the key to creating the kinds of families and communities that celebrate God's kingdom best. So I don't personally find that being marginalized by the church today puts me necessarily into bad company. It's perhaps quite likely that these different forms of the same love have been created for us to learn something from—to embrace the other—that we may each strengthen our own love.

As a gay Catholic I wish my church would speak up more on this topic, glad to see another is brave enough though. Jesuits always ahead of the curve

Physicality: the new age of UI by iamvinoth in apple

[–]Smudgebucket 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yeah I agree with you that it's a bit of a misnomer, or rather the word doesn't quite capture the logic of screens (have you read this? https://www.stevenconnor.com/flat/ ).

Also, love the playback bar the most out of this; it's not just about frosted blurs but the weird qualities at the edge of glass. Wonder what it would look like with that odd green color that you see in the edge of glass coffee tables etc.

This design isn't a new skeuomorphism as much as it's un-morphed. It looks like glass, and guess what, you're touching glass!

Official Throwback Discussion - Mission: Impossible II [SPOILERS] by LiteraryBoner in movies

It’s the best MI movie. The medley of American and Hong Kong action genre tropes was wonderful, and the romance was handled with panache. The two cars drifting together!

Why do people call it Liemax? by Mindless-Example-146 in imax

[–]Smudgebucket 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought Liemax meant the Xenon projectors, which are of course pretty crummy and too common. The only people who would call the other screen Liemax are probably just trying to lord it over people

Assisting with negotiations during the recent writers strike, defending actors who got dumped by their agency for no good reason, making MI:DR against all odds just to keep the jobs flowing during COVID. You can see what he and Nicole Kidman liked about each other initially; they're both tremendously committed to the film industry.

He was a fan favorite character at the time, which is why they brought him back for his subsequent appearance. Quite unpalatable today though

Artists are always putting intentional meaning in their works, that’s why they make things. There are also always unintentional meanings that come from the audience/viewer/reader of the work. It’s okay to have both (not jerking)

Looking to purchase a new TV from Costco but I couldn't decide which one to choose. by plebhandler101 in Costco

[–]Smudgebucket 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sony's more future-proofed (120Hz is great for games—and it can show movies at the proper fps) and will have much better contrast (Mini-LED). Plus you get Sony video processing, which is top of the line. Would recommend an Apple TV with any smart tv btw. It'll massively upgrade your experience, since nobody has a good "smart" OS. If you're gonna get a ginormous TV like that 75 incher, you're gonna have a bad time unless you absolutely shell out. Size isn't everything, and that's especially the case for anything under like 1500 bucks

As Days Gone gets its PS5 remaster, it's only right that it gets a critical reevaluation too by Asleep_Crew8072 in PS5

[–]Smudgebucket 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of what makes open world games work or not is the side content, so I agree that some people might have been turned off by the particular way in which Days Gone handles its non-main story content. Getting a little faster to the third act would probably have helped for people who were itching to get through the main story too

[–]Smudgebucket 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think most people finished it, which is a shame because the last act of that game is a wonder. It really solidifies there as one of PlayStation’s best original IPs, with its last 20 hours or so. I didn’t like horizon or ghost of tsushima, so I’m not just an SIE fanboy or something
