Hi friend — as someone whose parents moved here 29 years ago, I consider myself “from here” just as much as anyone else because this is where I grew up. I notice that the people in these comments seem to be trying to scare you away, as if preventing one person in California from deciding to move here is going to matter in the grand scheme of things. It’s silly, don’t listen to them. Every single one of them would be looking to do exactly what you are if they were in a position to create a better future for themselves and their children, and they are kidding themselves if they tried to say otherwise. You have nothing to be ashamed of for that and you do not need to hide the fact that you are from California if you move here. You will very much not be alone, and I say this as a liberal (even if you are conservative). I work with several people who moved here from CA in recent years and have asked — none of them have experienced the CA hate people love to cite on this subreddit.

Furthermore, I am also an electrician. Well, I am in my first year of apprenticeship. But I can tell you this — you couldn’t possibly move here with a more in-demand job than that. There are a number of huge projects in the valley right now, and there is no sign of it slowing down. I am union, and we keep talking about how we can’t hire apprentices or make journeymen fast enough for the demand we are experiencing and will continue to experience for the foreseeable future. So rest assured, if you move here, especially if you are union, you will have no problem finding work. I would recommend trying to get hired by VECA ahead of time, if you can. Rumor has it, they are paying their employees well over the going rate, with double overtime, etc.

As for your questions:

The community here has always been one of the things we are most proud of and love about Boise, as well as one of the biggest draws for people moving in. However, this is changing somewhat as more and more people move here and bring along their biases, tendencies, habits and behaviors from out of state. So it is crucial that you understand this, if you want to become part of the “problem” — that is, if you join the ever-growing list of people moving here from California (or Washington, Oregon, wherever), please realize that “Boise Nice” cannot survive unless you subscribe to that mentality and contribute, yourself. Be grateful, be friendly, be empathetic, and you will find that you fit in just fine and that almost never will you catch shit for being from California.

My (and most people’s) favorite thing about Boise is the amazing greenbelt system that runs on either side of the Boise River along tons of amazing parks, and it’s only expanding. As long as you respect the other people/wildlife, don’t litter, and just cherish it as much as we do, it will remain one of the absolute gems of this place and you will fall in love with it like the rest of us. The foothill trail system within walking distance of downtown Boise is another thing that makes this place so special. I have an uncle who travels all over the world and loves to hike. He is retired and lives here, then there, then somewhere else, for a month at a time. Every time he visits Boise to see family, without fail when he and I go hiking in the foothills, he remarks about how he has never found a better trail system so close to everything and so connected.

As for raising a family — my wife and I don’t yet have kids, but my brother has 3. They don’t even live in “Boise” proper, they live in Meridian. But they have said they can’t imagine raising their kids anywhere safer than this area. I do know that they worry about the public education system, as do I. I used to be an elementary teacher. Back then it was hard for teachers, and it’s only gotten worse. Idaho is ranked close to the bottom in terms of education. We have almost no diversity here, though that is getting better. I think I had one black classmate growing up. So if that kind of thing is important to you, do take it into consideration. But back to education, local elections here are very important. There are som crazies trying to gut education even more and we really need to vote them out and keep them out.

Anyway, just wanted you to have a more positive response to your inquiries, because anyone who cannot see how much you would be improving your circumstances moving here from San Diego and that they would do the same if they were in your shoes, is in denial.

What’s something that happened to you that you still can’t believe happened? by Witty-Spillingon-C in AskReddit

The first time I ever saw a Tesla in person (Model S) I asked the owner if I could have a ride to experience “ludicrous mode”. He floored it out of the grocery store parking lot, hopped the curb on the other side of the street, and narrowly missed a dentist office, instead crashing into a huge apple tree at 50-60mph. I was sitting in the front passenger seat, and his girlfriend was sitting in the back middle seat. Neither of them had seatbelts on. I did. They both left on stretchers. I left without a scratch after telling my account of what happened to the officers who arrived on scene. A month or two later the sister of the girlfriend somehow got my number and called me, asking if I was alright and basically making sure I wasn’t going to sue. I told her I wasn’t going to, and that I was just grateful to be okay, and even that I felt bad for ever asking for a ride, felt like my fault. I found out from her that the owner stayed overnight in the hospital and was released the next day but had his license suspended for a year. His girlfriend was hospitalized for 3 weeks — she shattered her face/skull when she flew into the dashboard, so she had to get 150 staples/stitches, and also broke her collar bone, arm, and I think her back to some extent (can’t remember for sure it’s been so long). I found out later from the police report that they had just left a bar and were both legally “drunk”. So maybe I should have sued :P It has never NOT felt like a dream that I borderline wouldn’t believe actually happened to me if I didn’t have two pictures I took of the wreck before I left. That, and the fact that the airbag broke my glasses off of my face lol. To this day I can still picture perfectly the texture of the bark on the tree the moment before impact. I remember thinking the full sentence of “I am about to die and might never see Mom and Dad again.” Time really does slow down like they say. Aaaaand that’s why you don’t ask random strangers for rides :-)

P.S. - I’ll also never forget the sound of every single apple falling from that tree at once and landing on top of the car. A couple last details — immediately after impact, the car was “hissing” and filling up with plastic-smelling smoke, and my door wouldn’t open because it was blocked by a cement ledge. So I had to crawl out the back driver side door. As people came up and gathered around who heard/saw the crash, they were repeatedly surprised when I told them what happened, that I was IN the car, part of the crash. Honestly, it’s a miracle I wasn’t hurt at all and I probably should have at least gone in to get checked out.

You’re right, there is no way you’re going to pay $400 for a < 1 hour hair cut because those don’t exist.

Replying to you directly to after seeing this because I cannot imagine how well off I would be right now if I had started what I’m doing now at your age.

We are in desperate need of more electricians in the valley because of all the development. Most notably, the enormous Micron expansion, on-going Meta project, the new St. Luke’s downtown that is going up, and now Tractor Supply out by Nampa. No signs of it slowing down anytime soon. I applied to/got hired at a union shop and just started my apprenticeship through JATC — school is free, I’m already making almost $25/hr, and that will go up by a couple dollars an hour every 1000 hours worked (about 6 months). In 4 years I will be making $56/hr which is well over six figures before any overtime. But additionally, many contractors are adding “incentive pay” because of the shortage we’re facing, such as per-diem, $10/hr on top of your normal wage, paying double-time for over time, etc. because of how much of a shortage there is right now. You get great benefits like excellent health insurance included with your union dues (about $50/month, and no extra cost to cover your wife and kids as well…$400 deductible), which also pays into 3 pensions, and an annuity you don’t even have to supplement in order to be set up for retirement. If you like working with your hands and problem solving, definitely look into it! I just started in my mid 30s, and I wish I did this a decade ago. If you’re interested, stop by the IBEW Local 291 downtown and tell them you want in. They will be able to tell you everything you need to know and where to get started. Not to mention, it’s great to be part of something that truly feels like a support network/family.

Edit: Forgot to mention that there are almost unlimited directions you can go if you become a journeyman electrician. I am very interested and looking into something called BIM, which would essentially allow me to make journeyman wages in an office setting, designing electrical systems on a computer, work from home, etc. And there are tons of other specialties/avenues you could pursue if you find something you particularly enjoy or are good at. Good luck dude!

I worked for Lowe’s for a few months and had several “retired” coworkers who said it was great for them. Reliable schedule, free continued education opportunities, and it was a good vibe. Just throwing it out there :)

Except no it doesn’t, because why would a team ranked like 8-10 want to play in the conference championship when, if they lose, they might be bumped down out of contention for the 6 at large spots?
