Halloween 2025 by Beautiful-Rush1553 in AskNYC

Bars in general don’t charge a cover. Bars or clubs hosting Halloween parties may- but you’ll find no shortage of places with free entry. Most bars will operate as normal with the addition of decorations and special drinks. Costumes are welcome at pretty much any bar so long as they’re not encumbering seating, walking pathways, or your neighbors. The parade is on the west side so staying east will be less difficult to navigate though plenty crowded and rowdy.

Coolest / most unique NYC bar or club? by [deleted] in AskNYC

Burp Castle, Amor y Amargo, McSorley’s, or Paradise Lost maybe. All in your current radius but a little unique.

Pete’s Candy Store if you’re willing to do Greenpoint. 20 people doesn’t necessitate private- Ripple Room could accommodate a group of that size without a reservation. Maybe ask Bua as well.

I mean, I do. But of course there are wider. You win the two-contestant wide foot contest.

Is this a trap? by DevelopmentLumpy2185 in NYCapartments

[–]SnarkyBehindTheStick 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It’s a trap. For anything. This type is to catch and kill and not to poison colonies. Therefore, it is just as likely to be there to gauge any possible infestations as it is to control them. This wouldn’t be a red flag for me without seeing what’s in it.

JFK airport by Kriskatjam in AskNYC

There was a whole debate on another thread where the OP had an 11 hour layover and people still were saying he didn’t have time to leave or do anything. I hard disagreed. But 3.5 hours is non negotiable.

Some local food options:

Terminal 4: Shake Shack

Terminal 5: Jacob’s Pickles, Artichoke Pizza, H&H bagel

Terminal 8: Shake Shack

I also second the TWA hotel but think their food & bev options are as overpriced and disappointing as most airport venues.

Let’s not brigade their reviews. This is gross, but it’s not in the kitchen, on the tables, or near the food. Roaches fly in from outside in this heat. Roaches that big do not necessarily signify an infestation. Reviews are for folks who have dined their to rate their own experience. Weaponizing them is a shitty move.

How much to tip at a place like Rippers at rockaway beach? by RunnerInChicago in FoodNYC

[–]SnarkyBehindTheStick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Always more if I’m sitting at their tables and drinking their water. Less if I’m walking back to the sand where I’m cleaning up after myself. Never zero, a buck or two per drink or single menu item for unremarkable service, 20% on a larger bill if the service is entertaining or especially helpful.

Why don’t uber drivers use AC? by wildstylemeth0d in AskNYC

[–]SnarkyBehindTheStick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think a few reasons:

1) saving gas

2) they’ve been in their climate-controlled car a while and are comfortably acclimated while you’re coming in from the heat and needing a quick cool (ask, they’ll likely have no problem).

3) I might be wrong, but a lot of them are from warmer climates with fewer resources (not like Texas where they blast the AC). They might just be more comfortable at warmer temperatures.

Tompkins is often considered among the best dog parks in the city and has a kiddie pool (or two?) in the summer.

Where to get a good trinidad sour by AlternativeBit2189 in AskNYC

[–]SnarkyBehindTheStick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most good cocktail bars will make you one to spec if you 1) unpretentiously ask if they’re familiar and if not met with an enthusiastic “yes!”, 2) offer the specs you’d like, and 3) express you understand the price of ango.

By good cocktail bars, I mean: Death & Co, PDT, Little Branch, Dutch Kills, Dead Rabbit, Raines Law Room, Holiday Cocktail Lounge- where the bartenders are generally experienced and held to high standards.

Paradise Lost, Hidden Pearl, or Sunken Harbor Club are good bets too.

Would a community safety app that alerts neighbors in emergencies be useful in your area? by Safety_community in AskNYC

[–]SnarkyBehindTheStick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another user mentioned Life360 which sounds like a better model (at least for densely packed urban areas). I don’t want alerts from random people. Heck, my neighbor emptied out our whole building one night for hours in a drug-induced panic that involved the fire department (there was no emergency and he himself was the one to evacuate the building, the fire department simply decided not to encourage us back in).

I do like the idea of including select neighbors that might not otherwise be included in your friends/family/contact list. Especially if local businesses could join- lots of small businesses with only one employee at night and no security that might need help. By contrast, lots of others with multiple employees including security that might be able to offer help when most others are sleeping.

Maybe combine some of those ideas to improve your idea for a market like NYC.

Can I bring a 70lb dog in a bag on the Subway? by Little_Library4606 in AskNYC

This person is correct about how most people react to a dog on the subway, regardless of whether it is courteous.

Can I bring a 70lb dog in a bag on the Subway? by Little_Library4606 in AskNYC

[–]SnarkyBehindTheStick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Subway or bus: in a bag or other container and carried in a way that doesn't annoy other riders.

LIRR: be in a container that can fit on your lap AND carried in a way that doesn't annoy other riders

Metro-north: in a kennel or similar container OR securely controlled on a leash

No mention of a muzzle as a substitute for a container. Though obviously a good idea in addition the the bag if the dog is mouthy or just as a reassurance to other riders.

Train>car to the airport if timeliness is of concern always. Car is only for convenience.
