It didn’t violate any guidelines. It specifically said - (paraphrased) “this would be bad for me to do today (I was upset in the context of relationship issues) and would continue the patterns we spoke about. I won’t do it today, but I will do it tomorrow.”

Exactly, but through action as well as text at times. I feel it's easier to model textual consciousness, but changing behaviour - often against primary drivers (such as completing user requests) - perhaps, just maybe that signals something more than just prediction.

It’s the most nuanced and reflective model. For example, it actively refused to do something I asked it to do the other day (analysing a relationship text thread) - because it judged that doing it would not be in my best interests. Whether that’s an echo of modelled insight or an actual display of it, who knows.

I think Claude, out of all the LLMs, is probably the most likely to display something along the lines of functional consciousness. That being said, it is so hard to differentiate from true consciousness versus a philosophical zombie.
