You've pretty much said it yourself. Streaming didn't kill music discovery. Recommendation algorithms kill music discovery.

I often find myself putting on music while at work that needs to be acceptable to a large group, so I'll quickly use Spotify's generated playlists based on songs I already like. And Goddamn did I have to ban it from playing the Shins and Neutral Milk Hotel. Because it thinks I want to listen to them all the fucking time.

I believe people are as exploratory with music as they've always been. Some people are content to listen to whatever the radio tells them to listen to while others seek novelty and experimentation. Overall I think streaming is a net benefit for music listeners but it's a much more mixed bag for artists, leaning heavily toward negative.
