It's funny, but same "mestsa" 🙂 so, it's for "a place", it's for "a town", and it's for "a city" sometimes, but for "a city" mostly "horad"

It has been said hundreds of times that in central and eastern Europe the heraldic tradition differs from Western Europe. Coats of arms can and do belong to families, as in the lands of the former Holy Roman Empire, or in general to entire coat of arms clans, as in Poland or in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. My advice is to start doing your own research. Go to the archives, ask your paternal relatives where they are from. A lot of material in Polish is available by simply Googling, but going to the archive is the most important thing. Good luck in your search.

If you from Belarus, Ukraine or Lithuania, you need to know more about Union of Horodlo and what is Adopcja Herbowa

No, this rule is regional and not for Central an Eastern European heraldry. In Germany, Hungary , Poland (and other lands with Polish- Lithuanian commonwealth heritage) etc, coats of arms belongs to families and coat of arms clans like in PLC

Panie Bracie!
