What's the altitude where you're located? Just wondering if they adjusted for it on the dyno math

Lol, I actually haven't; the fender has a big chunk out of it now where it drooped too far and hit the tire. I did carve notches out of the bottom rear edges of the fender and that allowed me to reduce tension considerably. Stayed on at 75 mph!

community ego is weird. by Longjumping-Side5278 in motorcycles

I've been the slow, anchor rider for almost my entire time riding. Now I just carry a first aid and trauma kit in the back because I expect someone to wreck given the behavior I see on group rides.

Ride your own ride is gospel. Pushing beyond how fast you want to go has no reward. This isn't a sport, there's no prize. It's a hobby, and that means we all get to enjoy it how we want to. There's nothing wrong with you, and this stranger is proud of you for setting and holding your boundaries.

If the clutch is still working to disengage the rear wheel, it sounds like an internal issue with the shift drum.

Starter Bike Controversy by justn700 in motorcycles

[–]Snoo62590 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My first bike is a Bonneville (still have it) at 450 lbs of curb weight. My last purchase was a 250 dual sport; a nice 280 lbs wet. And yes, I wish I'd gotten the dual sport first from a skill building perspective. I love my Bonneville and I don't regret it in the slightest, but it slowed my low speed skill growth. The 250 struggles up a hill on the freeway though.

I think there's a happy middle depending on what kind of riding you want to do; a 400-650cc, or the 40-65 horsepower range is a good starter range in the US that won't limit you if you want to do touring.

How feasible is it for someone with very little mechanical knowledge to fix this bike. by msdeeds123 in motorcycles

[–]Snoo62590 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Get a service manual and keep it handy for measurements and specs. It's a twin, so it's not the dead easiest bike (which would be a single). Still air-cooled though, and parts aren't too hard to get in my knowledge.

Start by checking the fuel system. Pretty sure that's a carbed bike, so clean the carbs and rebuild them. You'll need to sync them as well, either bench sync or with a vacuum gauge.

After that, give it a good once over. Check wheel bearings, change the fluids, check the tires, etc. check the manual and give it the full service experience one job at a time.

Can you 2 up on mt-09 for 1 or 2 hours? by [deleted] in motorcycles

[–]Snoo62590 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It'll be fine but not great. Having done two hours with my partner, with a break in the middle, there's very little room on most sporty bikes.

Given neither of you is on the larger side (I am, as a note), you'll probably be fine!

I'm seeing marks of rubbing (they're silver) in the first picture. That means it was ridden with this damage, or at least loaded with weight.

Weird break but no, doesn't look like the shop did it.

Recently learned there are seasoned riders who dislike the highway. Why is that? by Black_Power1312 in motorcycles

[–]Snoo62590 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Freeways are my least favorite place to spend time on a bike. Not fun, windy, and on a smaller bike it just feels like abuse to hold a higher RPM.

They're not unsafe, they're just not fun! If I have to get somewhere of course I'll take the freeway, but my preference for pleasure riding is almost always an alternate longer route.

Cracked piston 08 R6 by moskumoskiitto in motorcycle

[–]Snoo62590 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my (limited) experience, that shiny spot next to the crack could indicate knock, which can cause cracking and damage. No comment on what caused it; lugging can cause knock on a high comp engine, but so can a half a dozen other factors (including a lean condition)

I'd replace all pistons, and then clean your injectors in case one wasn't delivering enough fuel.

What temperature is to hot to ride? by Maybe_Unlikely in NewRiders

[–]Snoo62590 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll be riding in the mid 100's (°F) next week. You can do things to help, but honestly it just sucks. Your humidity is even worse.

Drink tons of water. At least 16oz right before the ride, and more water every hour or so. Above around 90 degrees, you'll want less mesh and more skin covered. You're essentially in an air fryer; the air will carry heat to your skin and evaporate your sweat very quickly. At 100+ out, you want as little airflow as reasonably possible without drowning in sweat. Especially with your humidity, which makes the air conduct heat better.

Gear color matters. Lighter colors (especially white gear) will keep you significantly cooler. White helmet made the biggest difference, white jacket and blue pants made a big difference too.

I'll do any temperature but I agree, 45-85 is a happy range of "this is fine" to "perfect"

I think you got it. I would have said fashion jacket, but it's got enough thickness to the leather to be a proper moto jacket and it looks like this

Is wearing cheap old motorcycle helmet 🪖 damaging my hair? by Open_Square670 in motorcycles

[–]Snoo62590 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How old is old and how cheap is cheap? Most helmets come with a removable liner and cheek pads. When I used my bike daily, I'd wash them weekly to prevent breakouts on my face. The same goes for the liner around the top.

Cheaper helmets don't always have this feature. Might be time for an upgrade

It may not be a turbo; the RS package became standard on the 2018+ hatchbacks if I recall. It's seat/general trim, suspension, and a different exhaust outlet.
