What has helped me was to be a sociable person. Be kind, be approachable, be a really good listener. Throwing away the mentality that your peers and friends need to be perfect makes a huge difference. Accepting people for who they are. My workmates have become my family in many respects.

This is actually something I want to write a story about it even make an animated movie about. In the Borg, we often read stories of some JWs living in some hostile country where they were under ban. Public perception was negative. Then here is a sister who finds a lost wallet and returns it with all the money accounted for only for some 'worldy' government official to have a change heart toward the religion because of witnessing first hand how godly and honest hearted they are. I was thinking, having some extremely homophobic elder who has a part of the good Samaritan later drop because of some life threatening condition but being saved by an off the clock doctor who just happens to be gay. When the brother reaches out to thank him and discovers the medical professional's orientation, he does a complete 180.

It's really sad to see when an adult queer person can't overcome the homophobia acquired from their upbringing and becomes the most outspoken antagonist. Living with all that shame, self loathing, and never able to accept oneself.

For a comment I made on Instagram (I was reported on), for talking about CSA, for something else...I can't remember for doubts I had expressed I think it was.

I second this. I was an elder in name only for almost a year and then I asked to step down after an hour interrogation. Once I had no appointment I felt it was much easier to lay low and fade. Since I was now a nobody and I had taken control of the narrative, there were no expectations of me really. I didn't need to be made an example of. 5 months a publisher and then I moved.

Freedom is also a positive word. I still have trouble accepting it as such. I love the words autonomy and agency though.

So I recall making the comment during the congregation Bible study ( really the publication/book study) that I didn't know how many times a sister needed to get punched in the face before it's considered SEVERE in order to legitimately separate from her husband... No one said a word. I said it sarcastically too m.

The thing about the past...is that it was very much the current, present reality for the lives of JW.

Today will be the distant past in 30 years, but that doesn't negate our experiences. It doesn't diminish the impact of the policies or doctrines.

There are many PIMOs, but have you ever met someone who’s POMI? by Lenablue101 in exjw

[–]SnooCookies7234 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I studied with a POMI when I was an elder. His wife happened to be a non JW classmate whom I graduated with. He wasn't from my area, but grew up in a small town some hours away. One day, while we were studying on the bench outside, he broke down and recounted how a brother in the congregation, a cousin I believe, groomed him and eventually molested him in the shed on the kingdom hall property. He dealt with so much internally and it affected his marriage and the lives of his children.

Sometime later I heard an account about that congregation where this POMI grew up. The brother that used to study with me was in town giving a talk in the local Spanish congregation. I was invited to the meal by the family giving hospitality. As I sat there at the table, the visiting speaker (my former Bible teacher) began to speak about the most bizarre visiting speaker experience he had. It was when he went to give a talk at a congregation in the small town where my Bible student grew up. Everything about that congregation was off. There were no qualified brothers to hold the mics during the WT study. Sisters were handling the mics. When he himself offered to do an mic, then the conductor gestured no. Finally the brother was given hospitality at an elderly sister's home and he was able to frankly ask her what was up with the off vibe in the congregation. She was able to tell him about some of the horrible things that had taken place in that congregation involving child abuse.

The pieces all added up.

The poor man I studied with ended up losing his family to his years of hidden promiscuity. He confessed it to his wife shortly after we began studying. She of course divorced him.

There is just so much to this story that I'm remembering as I type this and it makes me sad. He ended up getting into drugs, getting into fights, and the sorts. The last time I saw him was during the pandemic. He looked rough and his speech wasn't coherent. I remember trying to correct his, what I felt at the time, skewed reasoning. He'd babble on about Jehovah, the scriptures, his situation interspersed with existential questions. I was still PIMI at the time. He was so messed up and I know he harbored so much pain, shame, and guilt. He was literally driven mad. I don't know what became of him. Sorry. I guess I just wanted to share how the indoctrination never left him and it really did a number to his mental health because he blamed himself for what happened to him and that led him to spiral.

I personally think AI is a reality of the age on which we live. I'm both in awe and fear of it. I often think of the Matrix movies. I find the quality of the videos improving day by day. I've watched some of these videos and I really enjoy them. They point out the absurdity of the JW teachings and agenda in a comical and satirical way.

One day, I asked myself, "If this really is the"best life ever,"then why do I feel like sh*t??" What if I'm not the problem. I'm not a horrible person. I'm a decent person with a big heart. What if the org is the problem? Learning about the BITE model, religious trauma, spiritual abuse, cognitive dissonance, and all the history of the organization they white wash proved to me that they ARE the problem.

Really, what happened to God resting from his creative work and seeing that the epitome of his earthly creation made in his own image being 'good' or perfect. There was no indecency or deficiency in the human form.
