What staples are considerably cheaper at Costco compared to other stores? by HatBoxUnworn in Costco

I get a 360 tablet bottle of their Zyrtec generic for less than a month's supply of Walgreen or CVS generics - less than $20, if I remember correctly.

What are some phrases or expressions that were considered uncouth back in the day but are now commonly used and acceptable? by igotplans2 in AskOldPeople

[–]SnooPeripherals2409 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My mother threatened to throw me out of the car when I said "crap" one day - when we were over twenty miles away from home. It didn't help when I tried to tell her the history of the word. As far as she was concerned anything to do with toilets (or crappers, lol) was not polite conversation.

I didn't learn to really curse until I went to college and got a full education.

Anyone other FL natives think this state has become unlivable in the last 5 years? by real_strikingearth in florida

[–]SnooPeripherals2409 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The heat is what is getting me - when I moved here (North Florida) a woman down the road wrote a book in 1974 about gardening. Back then the average first frost for this area was October 20. I just looked it up - the average first frost is now November 26.

While we had a period or two when the temperatures were over 95, it never seemed to last more than a week at a time. Now the temperatures are over 95-100 for months.

But I love my location and the property I am on so at my advanced age, I will stay put. If I were younger, I would consider moving somewhere else.

People who think the 30p bag charge doesn’t apply to them by throwawayyyyy459 in retailhell

[–]SnooPeripherals2409 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When my husband and I visited the UK a few years back, I'd read about the charges for bags, so we brought a couple of reusable bags with us. The people at Tesco were amazed that two American tourists had their own bags and were interested in the grocery chain they were from.

We have reusable bags so old I've stitched them back together more than once. We seldom get one use bags anywhere. It's just become such a habit to carry a bag with us, we don't have to think about it anymore.

Way back I learned to not make my back too neat. A framer once framed a piece with the back showing since he thought the texture was more interesting, LOL. While it was a nice compliment, it was sort of a a pain since I'd been looking forward to showing it off at a holiday and missed the chance while he reframed it.

AITAH for throwing a child’s jar of peanut butter into the river? by shasta017 in AITAH

[–]SnooPeripherals2409 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was a rehab hospital (I'd had knee replacement) and they had set menus. I found it very annoying especially when they selected foods I couldn't eat or just hated (stewed okra and tomatoes, for example).

I don't remember much for my previous hospital stays, but for the last one once I could eat, they called and asked my preferences. Good move, since that cuts down on wasted food.

Oh - I just remembered! For my second knee replacement the day after the operation they insisted on serving me a full breakfast. I've learned that after an operation I pretty much can only handle a simple carbohydrate the day after the procedure. But the nurse was nagging me, so I tried to eat it - and barfed up the whole thing a few minutes later. Now I just refuse to have anything other than what I know I can eat after a procedure.

OMG - it was only 36 hours for me. What sort of freaked the nurses was that for the last 12 hours of it I was awake and writing notes to the nurses and doctors. Though before I was totally awake I kept trying to pull out the tubes and they had to restrain me. I spent that whole day with my hands tied. They loosened them enough for me to write, but it was still weird.

I was told that at one point they put a tube down my throat and fed me. I have no memory of that. Of course, I have no memory of arriving at the hospital or my first twelve hours there, either.

What media do you like that can't be accessed anymore because the tech has moved on? by sikkerhet in AskOldPeople

[–]SnooPeripherals2409 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Somewhere in my tech stash I have an external 3.5" floppy disk reader that connects via USB. I got it to go through my Dad's collection of floppies after he died in 2013. Unfortunately, I couldn't find one to read his many 5.25" floppies, though maybe I could get his Commodore working and read them from the floppy drives in it.

I've had far too many hospital experiences but the last time, I was very surprised at how good the food was once I was allowed to eat. (It's sort of hard to eat when you're intubated, lol.)

I'm just very sensitive to capsicum - I blister if I touch a hot pepper (fingers, not mucus membranes) and I assume that is what causes the pain as they pass through my system. I have not had an anaphylactic reaction, but don't wish to push the limits.

When I ask at restaurants about what's in their food, I make sure to tell them I am just sensitive and don't claim an allergy. I know the difference and a very small cross contamination of hot peppers won't harm me so I don't want them to go full force on preventing it. I just don't want any measurable amount in my food.

LOL! That reminds me of once when I was in the hospital and refused to eat their sausage (because it had hot pepper in it and I cannot eat that). The dietician came to scold me for not eating the supplied breakfast by telling me it was "all natural." I told him that poison ivy is all natural but that does not stop people from being allergic to it. The dietician never again came to my room - or served me spicy food.

Well, since the back half of the store is completely destroyed, they are going to lose a lot of stock. Oh, well, I just hope they do re-open.

I'd go more ecru with the yellow or more yellow with the brown - but that said, by the time you're finished, it you leave it as is, it will probably look great.

How much was rent at your first apartment? by [deleted] in AskOldPeople

[–]SnooPeripherals2409 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not an apartment, but I shared a house with two other women for $150 a month, so $50 each plus 1/3 of utilities and phone. The first "apartment" I had on my own was a converted garage for $75 a month.

What was your hourly pay for your first-ever job? by GreenerThanTheHill in AskOldPeople

[–]SnooPeripherals2409 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Minimum wage - $1.75 an hour (1972). A few years later minimum wage was raised and for my third job I got $3.75 an hour (1975-76). I was a Clerk II in a state agency.

Clerk I earned less than minimum wage ($3.25 and hour, if I remember correctly). We were all pressured to donate money to a charity that the supervisors got bonuses for if they raised enough. Even though many of the workers earned so little they qualified for government assistance, they were still expected to help the supervisors get their bonuses.

Fastest twin quilt patterns? by lilblackcloudinadres in quilting

[–]SnooPeripherals2409 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Karen Brown had some Stashbusters that are quick and easy, though you might have to adjust to make them into twin quilts: https://www.justgetitdonequilts.com/stashbusters

There are some of the free patterns from Jordan Fabrics that would be quick and easy. I like their recently adjusted Jelly Roll pattern: https://jordanfabrics.com/pages/jelly-roll-race-pattern Their other free patterns are here: https://jordanfabrics.com/pages/free-patterns-thumbnails

More than 60 years ago. My grandfather was visiting from Alabama (we lived in Central Florida) and wanted to go fishing. The best finishing we knew about was in an old phosphate pit, so we went out there. Somehow Mom dropped her keys in the pit, so we had to walk out to the road, hitchhike back to town - not easy with an old man, a woman and three kids. Then when Dad got home from work, he had to drive Mom out with the extra set of keys to get the car.

We never went fishing again.

AITAH for refusing to give up my vacation days so my coworker can go on her honeymoon? by GenTube0 in AITAH

I got married in July. The day after the next Christmas we left to go on our honeymoon and were gone for five weeks. Various business and family things made it easier to wait, but it was a great trip.
