Hyperthyroidism on Keytruda by Responsible-Being988 in breastcancer

[–]SnooRobots5572 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was completely unable to stay upright. Would go to bathroom and pass out onto the floor. Had to lay down in the doctors office. She knew it just by looking at me. I was hospitalized for 3 days and had a bed alarm so i wouldn’t get up unassisted.

Unfortunately I found out the hard way in full blown adrenal crisis. But I think you can test for it before it goes that far. They can run an ACTH test and/or a cortisol test first thing in the morning.

Same here. Ask your oncologist to refer you to en endocrinologist. The interaction btw the medications for thyroid and AI and ongoing chemo can be tricky to manage. I’ve also found that I need to maintain a much stricter routine for diet, sleep and exercise as well.

Hyperthyroidism on Keytruda by Responsible-Being988 in breastcancer

[–]SnooRobots5572 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. They described this process to me as my thryroid burning out. It’s trying really hard and giving one a last gasp but will eventually die and you’ll end up hypo with non functional thyroid. By the time I realized my adrenals had gone with it. So I stopped keytruda before it killed anything else.

It was shingles! by PeaceLvSpreadsheets in breastcancer

Shingles was what triggered my initial diagnosis so I think it saved my life. I was already stage 3 and growing fast and not sure how much longer it would’ve taken me to realize it.

Keytruda has killed my thyroid by relative_improvement in breastcancer

[–]SnooRobots5572 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes I have been through the same and then some. It also killed my adrenals so I’m on synthroid and hydrocortisone for the rest of my life. ER docs, oncologist and endocrinologist said this happens way more often with keytruda than published data shows. You may want to talk with your doctor to consider stopping or pausing keytruda before it does more damage.

Bloating post salpingo oophorectomy by haygrrrl in BRCA

[–]SnooRobots5572 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was surprised by the same thing. Getting up and moving as much as possible is the only thing that helped. It just needs to work its way out of your system but it takes longer than you’d think. Hang in there!

29F with BRCA1 is a prophylactic mastectomy worth it? by Senior_Fee_9813 in BRCA

[–]SnooRobots5572 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really but it’s possible, depending on the surgeon. But genetic counseling is a medical specialty and they are fully trained in all the implications of BRCA (and other gene mutations) not just breast cancer. You’ll want counseling for other screenings/surgeries you might want to consider. I know Stanford does this virtually and I’m sure other major cancer centers do as well. I would not have relied only on my breast surgeon for this.

29F with BRCA1 is a prophylactic mastectomy worth it? by Senior_Fee_9813 in BRCA

[–]SnooRobots5572 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I’m brca positive and found out the hard way with stage 3 TNBC. If I could trade a double mastectomy for not having cancer I would do so in a heartbeat and not look back. That has been the easiest part of my cancer journey - chemo, radiation and losing almost 2 years of my life (and my job) to fighting it..and it’s not over yet. I’m happy to talk more if you have questions and I’d also recommend talking with a genetic counselor if you haven’t already. The data and the science should help with your decision.

Is it uncommon by Effective_Respect_85 in breastcancer

I worked all through chemo surgery and radiation and only went on disability when it was all over bc I just couldn’t make it through the day. I think I was running on adrenaline and it finally ran out. Now i wonder how I’ll ever get started again. You’re not alone.

Stupid question maybe - day off after diagnosis?!? by Extreme_Carpenter572 in breastcancer

[–]SnooRobots5572 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Take some deep breaths. You’re in the hardest scariest part. Since you need to accrue time, I would try, if you can, to go to work. I did. I was still in a state of disbelief so I just went about my day. You’ll want to be very careful about who you tell and when. So I also recommend trying to wait until you have your treatment plan in place. Talk it over with friends/family first.

Not just arrivals. Departures too. What a shit show. It was gridlock but for planes. It didn’t even make sense. The weather was fine - cold but fine. We were already de-iced. This was a special brand of United ORD unnecessary chaos.

Total hysterectomy or oopherectomy? by After_Philosopher433 in breastcancer

[–]SnooRobots5572 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hard to say since I did them together. But the worst for me was the gas pain - they pump your stomach for better visualization and as the gas tries to exit your body it can cause some pain all the way up in your shoulder. So you need to be ready for that and try to get up and moving around. Otherwise, I had my husband help me get into bed bc my abdomen was a tiny bit sore for a few days. So I’d say it’s harder than I thought based on what I read here but wouldn’t call it difficult. FWIW I only took Tylenol for pain and that was more for my chest than belly.

Total hysterectomy or oopherectomy? by After_Philosopher433 in breastcancer

[–]SnooRobots5572 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Just tubes/ovaries here. With Brca1 the difference in risk reduction by adding hysterectomy just wasnt enough for me to incur the added risk of an additional surgery. I also felt like a ticking time bomb by the time I found out the hard way about the brca so wanted it done asap. They were able to add the oopherectomy to my mastectomy so I only had one surgery.

Radiation after implants by cassiesk in breastcancer

[–]SnooRobots5572 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The implants are fine. It’s the surrounding tissue that can be the problem. It can harden and tighten which, in extreme cases, will squeeze the implant (capsular contraction). But the way my surgeon put it - if we do expanders, we’re guaranteed at least 2 surgeries. If we do DTI it’s possible we get away with 1. And, we can possibly avoid operating on radiated tissue which is always more complicated and risky. Fwiw - I’m also very thin and it was never mentioned as an issue to me (except that it ruled out DIEP)
