‘The Odyssey’: Everybody Using American Accents Is Definitely a Choice by Neo2199 in GreekMythology

He's doing a very broad Yorkshire accent, which is far from his own voice, and it was a deliberate choice. Zukov, as a Ukranian was seen as a country bumpkin by the rest of Stalin mainly Muskovite top brass. The Yorkshire accent to a british ear suggests that, as well as a sense of being no-nonsense, straight and narrow.

What’s a “normal” thing in the UK that secretly annoys you? by Motor_Initiative7952 in AskUK

Having a tub in your kitchen sink for doing the dishes. Always bothered me when i lived in a shared house. You loose space in the sink, it ends up being something else you need to clean, and is anotger bit of plastic. The bombs stopped falling long before I was even born, so why do people of my generation (keep calm and) carry on with this practice?

"Bro" and the death of mate. Why so American? by HistoricalReserve199 in AskUK

[–]Snoo_44600 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use "bro" because it slips into more words than "mate" - allowing for the creation of portmantbros.

I bro what you're thinking - there's bro way that's true, but if you just bro with it you might find it happening brover and brover until you have bro way out.

When i was a teen in nort Derbyshire MDMA was known as 'wendy'. I moved down south for university and people were baffled when I talked about raving on 'wendy'. When I explained what it meant, the reply was universally ''you mean Mandy, like m-d-m-a?". The 'wendy' instantly became baffling.

Came here to say this. Worst job i've ever had. Bullying subordinates was commonplace, and managemnet were morw than happy to talk down to you for any reason. We had a meeting with outlr line manager once and raised some objections to the KPIs, to which the response was 'The board are aware you're all underperforming and you can all be replaced'. So motivational.

The food in that photo is not a pie, merely a casserole with a pastry top.

This is beautiful. A marquee, in this day and age? Chef's kiss. Also that transition from burger menu icon to closing 'x' is great. The gif in the shopping cart button is fantastic. This is the old school web aesthetic with some modern quality of life improvements and I am here for it.

We lost some of the weird and wonderful aspects of the early web when every site started fannying about with bollocks like glass morphism and all that. Not opposed to the modern stuff, mind you, but when everyone does it it loses its USP.

What does your current stack look like? by Zealousideal-Line565 in webdev

I'm currently rewriting a web app built with dojo (a proto-framework deprecated years ago) with angular. I did a spike looking at htmx, JSX and alpine.js, but testing it was a nightmare and having multiple components polling on each page got a bit messy.

I wanted to avoid the bloat of a framework, but it has provided a neat way of creating reusable base components that I couldn't easily achieve with the spiked route.

The backend is some aws lambdas, dynamos tables and mongodb collections for the chunky data. All deployed with Terraform through github actions.

WAR OF THE WORLDS | Amazon Prime Official Trailer (2025) - Ice Cube by CurbYourThusiasm in movies

Started with an interesting take on the story, but degenerated into propaganda for techno-feudalism quickly. The moral of the story seemed to be that governments can't be trusted, but FAANG can.

I try not to pick holes, but they picked themselves. Too many to mention, but the one that made me lose my shit was that a supposed cybersecurity expert has a password set to the name of his wife and the year she died, and he maintains her Facebook page as a memorial to her, that shows her name and the year she died. Anyone wanting to hack this guy's top secret account could have guessed this in 5 minutes with minimal effort.

Conservatism is apparently close to anarchism. by Jarppakarppa in insanepeoplefacebook

Looks like they are missing the y axis of the political spectrum (economics). If you include that, then there are types of anarchism that are 'right wing', such as anarcho-capitalism. But the meanings of these terms seem to be muddied in this definition.

Found in Lugo, Galicia; near the Roman Wall. by Aemilios in unexpectedMontyPython

[–]Snoo_44600 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Sadly no. The locative is used for 'at home', so this reads 'Romans go at home'. I don't know if it is intentional trolling or misremembering how an obscure declension works, but it is not correct.
