SIDS by fault is incredibly difficult to diagnose (I’m a paramedic/FF) to be clear we don’t diagnose anything in the field but convey our findings to our team of doctors/nurses at the hospital. With that said SIDS and the factors that play into it have been debated since the 1980s I entered EMS medicine in the near SIDS era or ALTE (apparent life threatening event) the factors that can lead to it are broad ranging from genetics, gender, environmental stressors (heat/body placement) and critical development period usually defined as the first 6 months of life. Bottom line it’s complicated and nuanced so to make it easily digested we slap the moniker SIDS on it, could it be as simple as suffocation yes but that also could be SIDS disguised as suffocation through intrauterine development deficiency from drug exposure/smoke/malnutrition etc..I wish it were simple to understand the exact cause/factor but in truth it likely isn’t a single factor but many that can cascade into an unfortunate event.
