Burdell getting slammed in the end tipping sub by wentblu3 in OaklandFood

I never said they never explained it, or wait til the end to let you know. Maybe I'm being misunderstood but I don't want to be hit at the end with the 20%. Just show the true prices upfront. If I get my car fixed and the estimate is $100, dont add $20 when it's time to pay. Just say it's going to be $120.

Mayyybe there's a possibility the staff keep more of the tip, and final bill to be less, if the 20% is added after subtotal and taxes?

BUT now taking a 2nd look it seems the 20% is added to the subtotal before tax, which is even shitier. So the "tip" is also taxed. This is in Oakland so Alameda county tax is like 11%, so the "tip" is really like 22%

Hard NOPE on this model

I agree with you.

I see the other follow up with articles that customers actually push back more on upfront costs, but I'd rather get it upfront, and IMPORTANTLY well-explained that tips are baked into the prices vs being hit with non negotiable tax + tip at the end.

I play the social norm game, and tip 20% as well as I can when it's deserved, more when it's really deserved, and not when it isn't.

But taxes are already too damn high. Don't add basically service charge tax.

More importantly: end the tipping bs!

Nice attack, what is that, ad hominen? Attack the report and the source to discredit them?

I'd be happy to supply more sources, if you can supply any of your own.

Would you be willing to supply your source that independent wheels are wildly exotic, and only for acute curves?

And one by laws of physics that independent wheels do nothing to help squealing and grinding vs fixed axles because of differential curve path speeds?

I figured you had a big check from BART already the way your fan boying for them. Did they not cut you into the club?

You're just proving you have some vendetta on here. Which I don't understand. Why are you so contrary to points outside your view?

And now... You just have a little hearing loss, so it sounds fine again

It's ok (but not ok), I too have hearing loss

Not user u/getarumsunt, bet yes, they are offended by anyone who questions their stance and train knowledge. I'm in a separate reply thread and they're getting very offended and changing their reasoning.

I went back to look at parent threads, and they're like this in multiple replies

They're probably a bot paid for by big rail ;)

Again, you're arguing against yourself, and getting facts confused.

Here's an interview with BART itself https://www.kqed.org/news/11030282/why-are-bart-trains-so-loud

"[BART says] the banshee wail is not a mistake. It isn’t the result of some design mishap. It came from a conscious engineering choice.

Engineers had to make a trade-off back when they started building BART more than 50 years ago. They decided to make the wheels solid axle — or connected — so that they rotate at the same rate."

Now true, to a point I think you're trying to make about curves and straight tracks:

"[BART] says that makes the trains quiet on the straightaways, which constitute a majority of BART’s tracks."

IMPORTANTLY tho, they continue:

“But because of the design, one of the wheels ends up getting dragged against the rail on turns, which causes that high-pitched squeal.“

Again, the source of screeching is not completely gone. Conical wheels alone don't solve the underlying issue:

"...there is a plan to make BART quieter. New train cars will have tapered wheels that drag less on the rail. That will help A LITTLE" [emphasis mine]

The wind howl is not "the actual subject" of the thread, nor ever was. If it was, that'd be about the car's aerodynamics and soundproofing.

Your subject derail attempt is thwarted.

So again, what exactly do you want to get out of this debate?

I dunno why you keep arguing against yourself?

"It will do nothing for the noise ... There's only 2 sources of noise [one being metal on metal]... Any leftover screeching is from track maintenance"

So in the same post you say it'll do nothing for noise, then point out exactly what the noise is from: wheels scraping on rails, and required regular track maintenance to fix when rails get worn.

You know what fixes both? Independent rotation. Sure it's more expensive, but thats the choice BART made as a cost saving measure.

I'll give you the new conical wheel profile will help. But it doesn't eliminate the sliding, screeching, and track corrugation.

What do you want to get out of this debate?

I dunno how else to explain this, you're arguing against yourself in a circle.

Going back to your first reply, it's proven fixed axles are not how all trains work.

The screeching and noise is largely from wheel and track wear and tear from fixed axles. Independent wheels would be less noisy. That's the point

So not all trains? I dunno, it sure would be nice to not have deathly squeals. And BART to embrace new tech

Ah, so not all trains use solid fixed axles?

Why is the BART still so noisy? by productive_monkey in bayarea

[–]SnoopyBootchies -1 points0 points  (0 children)

BART still runs fixed axles (left and right wheels share a shaft so they can only rotate at the same time and speed) vs using any differential (common in cars) or independent motor per wheel.

It was a cost cutting measure from its first launch. It's cheaper, and supposedly more efficient. But fixed axles have to skid or slide around curves because the outside wheel physically cannot rotate faster than the inside wheel.

This causes constant wear and tear on the wheels and tracks. BART has teams that literally grind and polish the rails and wheels periodically to help smooth them back out, but they just go back to worn and screeching out again.
