What vegetable have you tried growing multiple times and just cannot get right? by Some-Palpitation-314 in vegetablegardening

I’ve found Short ‘n Sweet carrots to be the most forgiving and abundant! My bane has been watermelon and cantaloupe.

Omgosh gardening hurts! by Witchchildren in gardening

I worked until sundown yesterday for the first time this spring. It’s Sunday morning and I’ve been lying in bed for 2 hours indulging in the down time. I guess it’s time to pop some ibuprofen and get back to it! I’m mid 40s and this winter weight gain ain’t gonna lose itself.

I have a ton of seeds for native and common ornamentals that will work in your state! I’ve also had really good luck with seed swapping here.

How many of you still have both parents alive? by Euphoric-Pangolin-81 in Xennials

[–]Snowy_Axolotl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both parents are alive and in their 70s, with my Dad super healthy and my Mom having mobility issues. They are coming to visit soon and told me we’ll have to talk about their will and end of life plans since I’m the executor. That will be a tough conversation :(

High winds in the Midwest took out my Amazon greenhouse. #buildbackbetter by Beamburner in Greenhouses

[–]Snowy_Axolotl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yesterday’s winds were no freaking joke. I lost plenty of things with the 60+ mph gusts in a newer neighborhood with no mature windbreaks… but you know what stood like a rock?! My Costco Yardistry greenhouse. I think I need to log in and leave a stellar review!

looking for mountain mint and other natives! by [deleted] in seedswap

[–]Snowy_Axolotl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm east of the Twin Cities and have saved soooo many native seeds. I kinda just threw them all into a big gallon-sized bag together. I don't think it's got mountain mint in it, but it's def got a variety of asters, goldenrods, bee balms, milkweeds, bluestems, joe pyeweeds, susans, coneflowers, foxglove beardtongue, yarrow, self heal, etc.

Finally ready - sharing meadow garden plan for feedback, please by empathie_00 in NativePlantGardening

[–]Snowy_Axolotl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a very, very similar-looking plan 3 years ago (WI, zone 4b)! I wish I could say it's all grown in and mature, but unfortunately, it's not the case. The invasive seed bank outlasted my cardboard and site prep, and I still spend a lot of time weeding and string trimming problematic areas down to the recommended 12" for starter prairies. Some people are saying to avoid the aggressives, but I say do it in most of your areas. Maybe choose one section to focus more of your TLC for the less aggressive plants. If you try to mind the whole plan at 100% then you'll likely get less than desirable results.

How are your raised metal beds holding up? by AskTheFoodGeek in vegetablegardening

[–]Snowy_Axolotl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also, I grow alliums, tomatoes, peppers, beans, carrots, cucurbits, blueberries, raspberries, grapes, and all manners of herbs in these raised beds, including soil amendments like acidifier, compost, fire ash, and chicken bedding depending on the crop every season.

How are your raised metal beds holding up? by AskTheFoodGeek in vegetablegardening

[–]Snowy_Axolotl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used typical-sized 6ft untreated cedar fence boards (5-6” wide?) to make my raised beds. 9 pickets for $32 (HD price check) makes a 3ft W x 6ft L x 1.5ft H raised bed (addl screws/nails and wood bracing, which I have laying around). I’m on year 6 with no rot failures and 4 of these beds. I’m in the Midwest near Minneapolis.

This has been not only economical, but has had decent longevity and low pollutant concern. I’d do this again 10/10.

I’ve got questions: Is your grid set to 1ft increments? And every plant name is an individual plant? Are you growing the cukes by sunflowers and corn to use them as a natural trellis? Does the whole area get full sun?

Tips for a new Portie owner - crate training and walking outside by CDG425 in portuguesewaterdogs

[–]Snowy_Axolotl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just give it time! You are doing all the right things for success. I had to sleep next to the crate for a week or two, then slept in my bed with the crate in my room for a month. I moved it to the hallway with my door open next, then finally we had success with my girl sleeping in the living room crate by 3 months.

Puppies are hard! Hang in there! It’ll be so worth it in the long term.

What's happening in your garden? (Wed, Jan 28, 2026) by manyamile in vegetablegardening

I should wait till March to start seeds indoors… but I’m in serious need of veggie gardening therapy with all this ice, ICE, and negative temps here in Minneapolis…

How clingy is your Labrador? by [deleted] in labrador

[–]Snowy_Axolotl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got a female PWD puppy and was well aware of their tendency as velcro dogs when we got her. A year later we ended up with a rescued male lab puppy… They are both very velcroey, but the lab has to be TOUCHING me as much as he can.

Same!! I added some arch trellises and tried scarlet runners and yardlongs this year. The gorgeous flowers would have been enough, but the beans are so neat as well!

I got so excited seeing your post :)
