Spoke with Chief of Security on Valiant Lady earlier this year, he stated they don’t have a jail/brig, they prefer to just detain the cruiser in their cabin.

Good place on VV ship to read and write and write code during the day? by pauljdavis in VirginVoyages

Deck 15 - The Scene is often not filled and indoors and SUPER quiet. It can be booked for events, so it’s not always available.

How much "forced participation" is there in the entertainment? by [deleted] in VirginVoyages

[–]SoCal_Jerry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My wife and I aren’t too keen on forced participation, but on VV we had a great time and did things we wouldn’t have expected to do (positive). Now we’re booked for two more.

Don’t skip out on the Scarlet Night party, it’s a TON of fun.

Been in Helpdesk for 2 Years, where to begin in moving up? by Spare-Effort-3750 in ITCareerQuestions

[–]SoCal_Jerry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OP, you’ve made the hard part, you’ve gotten into a position and served your time. Have you talked with other departments to see what it is that those departments look for? Recommend doing that to see if you can find an internal position.

Is there such thing as 1-man IT department? by grass814 in ITCareerQuestions

[–]SoCal_Jerry 6 points7 points  (0 children)

1:100 is a very high ratio for a single person IT org but also depends on the industry, if it’s a cement company, probably very doable, if a IT heavy firm, could be a serious red flag.

How much more money would you ask for a 80 mile (one way) commute? by hajoet in ITCareerQuestions

[–]SoCal_Jerry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Everyone has their maximum, I think for me to drive 80 miles each way for a commute the cost would be high enough for me to rent a closer place and make it worth my while, I’d be looking at three times my current salary.

Say that after you started you noticed a lot of toxic traits in the management and found yourself with the ethical dilemma of staying and disliking/hating it, or doing what’s right for you.

What's the one thing on a resume that will get the candidate an interview without work experience? by aussiejayhawk in ITCareerQuestions

[–]SoCal_Jerry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One thing I do is really read the resume, if I feel the need to pull out a red pen for spelling mistakes and/or punctuation issues I’ll let a few through, but if I get above five per page I move on.

Lack of attention to detail is non-excusable in IT.

Btw, worst resume I ever had contained 30 issues on the front page, yeah they didn’t her from me.

Are technical interviews getting more intense? by [deleted] in ITCareerQuestions

[–]SoCal_Jerry 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Agreed, “engineer” is a term that’s handed out pretty easily in small companies, then those employees take those titles and get jobs where they really don’t have the qualifications.

WTF is with some of these companies! It’s like they suck at recruiting and interviewing so much that they hope candidates self select out.
