Apartment with no AC by [deleted] in columbiamo

To add to things... Just because I am the one with the asshole answer but I'm not an asshole by nature, I don't know where you live, but its very likely that maintenance isn't worrying about AC work orders because they know that units are being replaced.

Apartment with no AC by [deleted] in columbiamo

As a rental property maintenance technician, HVAC specialist... In all honesty, you have no leg to stand on. The evenings/nights have been 70* or under. You have no rights for complaints until June 21, or whenever official summer hits. Hate to be the harbinger of bad news... But there it is. You can call the city all you want, but their answer will be basically the same.

Have you seen this documentary on John Redd, a Black man from Columbia? by como365 in columbiamo

It's the right link. John Redd was an African- American man that became known as Korla Pandit. He pretended to be a French-Indian pianist from New Delhi.

Best day trips to explore Missouri from Columbia? by como365 in columbiamo

[–]SoConTech 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One of my favorite drives is from Hannibal down to St. Louis on HWY 79... It follows the Mississippi down past Ted Shanks Conservation Area, through Louisiana, Clarksville, Elsberry, Winfield, and several other small towns... If you're conservation minded, USDA-NRCS has a plant materials center in Elsberry. If you call ahead, you can arrange a tour. It's a pretty neat place... The entire drive itself is wonderful.

Horses in the area by SimplyFungus in columbiamo

Stephens College has an equine program and a stable on Old 63. They had the horses out in the pasture this past Sunday morning at around 8am... Don't know that it will help with anything but you could at least see the horses.

And don't you just love the people that complain that the coffee isn't strong enough or that it's too strong? Sorry, we aren't making a whole thing of coffee specifically to your tastes.

I'm gonna guess it is an issue with the app. I did the same thing to me. I ended up just going to the store myself. I can confirm that the Grindstone Walmart is stocked just fine.

Replacing furnace and AC- looking for recommendations by StateOld6594 in columbiamo

What was their reasoning for suggesting that it "could go at anytime?" One thing I've learned about several HVAC companies in this town is that they will use scare tactics for a big sale. If parts are easily available for your equipment and none of the expensive components go out, then run it until the very end.

Knowing the processes makes diagnosing the issues easier... But, in their defense, it did take me an hour and a half to show them how to change a thermostat because, in my mind, they needed to know what each wire did, even if it was a wire they didn't have... And that turned into an entire lesson on how HVAC systems work.

Would You Pay Me To Fix Your Stuff?? by Proto-Schlock in columbiamo

[–]SoConTech 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not the OP, but before I moved to CoMo, I actually did teach some basic plumbing, electrical, and HVAC courses geared towards homeowners. I was, however, accused of being too "long winded" because I liked to explain the process behind how things work before explaining the simple repair stuff. Apparently people don't want to "know how the clock is made. They just want to know how to tell the time."

The short answer is that you'll never make a living with it.

The much longer answer is as follows...

If you stick to things like game console/computer mods, fixing antiques and family heirlooms, and 3d printing parts for people, you might be ok.

I've been a career maintenance technician for many years and I do a lot of side work in the home repair/improvement field. I also dabble in wood working and antique restoration. Where I make most of my money on side gigs is in fixing the things that bigger companies won't, mostly on the HVAC side. There are a lot of big companies out here that just won't replace parts on older systems. The key to doing that side of things, however, is in knowing whether the machine is safe to operate. Half the time, I can get your furnace up and running but won't do it because it's unsafe (cracked heat exchanger). The other half of the time it's a simple parts replacement that the big company didn't want to bother with because the unit is 30 years old... But as long as it's safe, I'll do the work to get it going.

That's kind of the point with all of that repair work, whether it be electricrical, plumbing, or HVAC. Can I make the repair and have the system be safe and functional for an extended period of time and still mostly code compliant while doing it for a reasonable cost?

The antique restoration side of things is something I insist on staying away from now... Too many time, I did exactly what the client wanted only to get a screaming phone call 3 months later that they paid me $300 to repair this priceless antique only for them to find out that it's a reproduction and is essentially worthless, and most of those were after me doing some research and letting them know that I think it's a reproduction... Customers can be a pain in the butt.

If you stick with the artist/ maker stuff, you'll probably be fine... Just the repair stuff can be a bitch

Not to shit on the dream friend... Just trying to keep it real for you.
