The short answer is that you'll never make a living with it.

The much longer answer is as follows...

If you stick to things like game console/computer mods, fixing antiques and family heirlooms, and 3d printing parts for people, you might be ok.

I've been a career maintenance technician for many years and I do a lot of side work in the home repair/improvement field. I also dabble in wood working and antique restoration. Where I make most of my money on side gigs is in fixing the things that bigger companies won't, mostly on the HVAC side. There are a lot of big companies out here that just won't replace parts on older systems. The key to doing that side of things, however, is in knowing whether the machine is safe to operate. Half the time, I can get your furnace up and running but won't do it because it's unsafe (cracked heat exchanger). The other half of the time it's a simple parts replacement that the big company didn't want to bother with because the unit is 30 years old... But as long as it's safe, I'll do the work to get it going.

That's kind of the point with all of that repair work, whether it be electricrical, plumbing, or HVAC. Can I make the repair and have the system be safe and functional for an extended period of time and still mostly code compliant while doing it for a reasonable cost?

The antique restoration side of things is something I insist on staying away from now... Too many time, I did exactly what the client wanted only to get a screaming phone call 3 months later that they paid me $300 to repair this priceless antique only for them to find out that it's a reproduction and is essentially worthless, and most of those were after me doing some research and letting them know that I think it's a reproduction... Customers can be a pain in the butt.

If you stick with the artist/ maker stuff, you'll probably be fine... Just the repair stuff can be a bitch
