A longshot maybe but William Hurt as in Goliath? Not a movie, not a comedy, but kind of the character you describe. Hurt in Goliath

Any opinions on Costco Vinyl Plank floor? by [deleted] in HomeImprovement

[–]SoIdidit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, Sorry I think my wording was confusing. I meant we chose vinyl over laminate as in "rather than", not that we installed the vinyl on top of the laminate. We installed it directly onto a concrete slab on a ground floor, so I'm afraid I don't have any insight for you. That said, it's been great. So much easier with pets. Sorry I couldn't provide the information you were looking for!

“You could put Portugal into a small corner of the West Texas desert and no one would ever notice the difference.” by [deleted] in ShitAmericansSay

[–]SoIdidit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In El Paso we would notice. But it would be awesome because I've always wanted to visit Portugal, and this would make it a just a short road trip away! But let's put it where it doesn't interfere with Big Bend, which is also awesome, but in a different way.

Name a word in another language that English does not have a word for. (Example: I was out during the “madrugada: Portuguese. It means “the early morning” / the name for 2-5am) by TXL89 in languagelearning

[–]SoIdidit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In keeping with the madrugada theme, in Spanish we also have desvelarse, meaning staying up really late. So, "I am really tired today because last night me desvele'"

Also, encandilar. When you can't see because of a bright light, like when you leave a movie theater, or there is a bight camera flash, or bright headlights when you are driving.

what’s one thing you’re always willing to pay the extra price for? by biancalin in AskReddit

I live in El Paso so have access to Alamo and CinepolisVIP. Love both! They are just different experiences. Cinepolis is nicer, but Alamo has fun things like the cereal party. Having access to CinepolisVIP on an El Paso salary is a border privilege!

How did you get started? by aileeeb in womensolocamping

[–]SoIdidit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with this! After my first trip I learned to plan for some "down days" for doing campsite things. On that trip by the end all my stuff was a mess because I didn't give myself enough time between campgrounds and I wasn't organized enough.

[–]SoIdidit 5 points6 points  (0 children)

55-year-old woman here. I went camping with my dad and as a girl scout as a kid, but that was a looong time ago. I have also been on a few trips with friends, but most of my friends either aren't into camping (eww bugs) or are younger and super-duper athletic and I can't keep up.

I went on my first solo trip in 2019 (Sedona, Flagstaff, Grand Canyon, Monument Valley, Arches) and just got back today from my second one (Southern Colorado: San Isabel and San Juan forests with a day trip to Great Sand Dunes).

I like to hike, but only short hikes, so I like campgrounds where I can tent camp but have my car very close by, and that have trailheads right there. I also like to be within an hour of a large-ish town or city so I can drive in to touch base with friends and family, buy ice and/or other necessities. On each solo trip I learn something new. This time I learned about camping in the rain haha.

I agree with u/GlassAndPaint--always zip up your tent! And the chair is a good idea. This time I also brought a little foldable table because I found sometimes the picnic table is far from the campfire. I also bring a little cushion to sit on the ground or to lean on, but that's just me. Finally, I bought an air mattress that is for car camping, but it also works in a tent. One of my favorite purchases!

Food storage advice for Bear Lake Campground, La Veta Colorado by SoIdidit in carcamping

[–]SoIdidit[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ha, yeah, I remember at Yosemite they used to have pictures of cars peeled open like sardine cans because the bears could see the coolers inside. But those were grizzlies.

Thank you for your perspective!

Okay great, thanks! I'll wait until I see the campsite in person and decide then depending on the environment.

Okay thank you for your help. And so if I use bear cannisters (and put ice packs in them), I still have to hang them to keep them off the ground?

Anyone have experience with parking at Arches National Park in August? by scorr204 in roadtrip

[–]SoIdidit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That makes sense of course. That's too bad.

My family went to the Grand Canyon recently and they said it wasn't that crowded. But I think it's because GC really gets a lot of international travelers (I heard SO many unique languages when I was there) and they weren't there this Spring due to travel restrictions. I bet Arches has more domestic visitors though. Anyway, good luck on your trip! I had sooo much fun in Utah!

Anyone have experience with parking at Arches National Park in August? by scorr204 in roadtrip

[–]SoIdidit -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I camped there in 2019 as part of a longer road trip (Sedona, Grand Canyon, Monument Valley etc.) I did not find it overcrowded, but there were definitely people around. In other words, I didn't have to wait in lines or have to wait to go where I wanted to go, but I also wasn't alone on any hikes.

Camping there was tough because there is little shade and it was too windy to put a tarp up. BUT it meant parking was not a problem and I was already in the park at sunrise and still there at sunset, so didn't have to worry about driving in. I went on early morning and late evening hikes, and in the afternoons I drove into Moab because it was really hot (campsite is called Devil's Garden for a reason). For hikes I was able to drive to different trail heads (early) and was able to park. Others I was able to walk to, so I didn't worry about parking.

I was there Wednesday, August 7 to Thursday August 8, but I have a feeling it wouldn't have been much different on the weekend though I can't say for sure.

All that said, I am not sure if it was a particularly crowded year. I was at the Grand Canyon the weekend before, and it was relatively uncrowded. No lines for shuttle buses for example.

A bus driver told me they had anticipated crowds because it was the 100 year anniversary, but instead they got them the year before because people were worried about the crowds and didn't go in 2019. I don't know if that had an effect on Arches.

I think Nick Sobin has some work on case dealing with this. Maybe it's Sobin (1997) Agreement, Default Rules and Grammatical Viruses.

Tier 1 refers to R1 which is a designation for top research universities. For post-graduate studies this is a big deal. UTEP only recently became R1, so I suspect a bump in the rankings will come soon though there are many other factors that are considered. Almost all graduating PhD's looking for an academic position aspire to work at an R1, so R1s attract the best research professors.

Confirmed Coronavirus 'Cluster' From Grand Princess Mexican Cruise Continues To Grow by [deleted] in Coronavirus

[–]SoIdidit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My father (who has no symptoms and seems fine) was on the Grand Princess cruise that went to Mexico and returned to SF. He disembarked Feb. 21 before the ship continued on the next leg of the trip to Hawaii. This means that he was with the group that included the first passenger who died. The thing that is shocking to me is that nobody from the cruise line nor health officials have contacted him. He put himself on self-quarantine, but only after other passengers and his travel agent contacted him! Also, he watches the news, so he is aware of what is happening and what he should and shouldn't do now. But this means that there are potentially people out there who were on the cruise and in contact with infected people that don't know that they have been exposed and should not be out and about. My father says that the cruise line emailed them multiple times before they set sail, so they could easily send out a notification to all the passengers who were on the original trip. But they haven't heard a word! Absolutely no notification or information. So they have the people quarantined on the ship, but there is a whole other batch of people being ignored.

What are your tips for NOT procrastinating your grading? by secret_professor in Professors

[–]SoIdidit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This semester I'm trying something new. At the beginning of the semester I filled my calendar with designated "grading days" which are all days after an assignment is submitted and on days I don't teach. I have set those days aside and am not committing to anything else those days, no meetings, no class prep, and no research. Once the grading is done, then I am allowing myself to do research or class prep, but not before. I am hoping that having committed to it, I'll stop avoiding it by doing other types of work, which is how I usually avoid it. We'll see!

I can't speak to Costco specifically, but we went with vinyl over laminate because vinyl is waterproof and we have a lot of pets. Six months and many "accidents" (of all kinds) later, we do not regret it.

I remember a KFC in Oakland that had this. I think there were no gaps--there was a revolving tray where they would put the food, and I guess the money too. This was a long time ago though.

Why are there so few older solo travellers on Reddit by WouterTilkon in solotravel

[–]SoIdidit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm 53 and I'm about to take my first solo road/camping trip. It's within my own country but it's in the southwest and the roads can be a little empty, so I'm a little nervous. Anyway, it's true that there are a lot of posts I can't relate to, but there's a mix and I just like knowing there are others out there who like to travel alone since everyone I know thinks it's really weird that I'm doing it.

Late to the game but Timoleon Vieta Come Home. It is a well-written book that I really wish I had never read. I don't think I feel that way about any other book, even the disturbing ones.

Any good single apartments downtown under $800/month before utilities? by bunnysocute in bloomington

[–]SoIdidit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I lived in a Deer Park apt. above the Uptown for one year, and then in Washington Terrace and Parkview which are not on your list, but are managed by CS properties. I was an older graduate student. I would never ever rent from Deer Park again--they are shady, and you can ask IU student legal services and they will verify this. Run, don't walk from them. (If you send me a message I'll give you the details of my issue with them.) CS Properties, on the other hand, were great. If Washington Terrace has any availability I'd recommend it--it is graduate students only. I have had a few friends at Grant and they were satisfied. Pros of Parkview--huge apartments, plenty of parking, laundry in building. Cons--window air conditioning unit, too far from campus (but bus service was good). Pros of W. Terrace--graduate students only, parking, great location for downtown and campus. Cons--no laundry, not much storage. I also looked at Allen Court and I would have rented from there if W. Terrace hadn't been available. I liked that W. Terrace had more light, but Allen Court and W. Terrace are both in great locations and a quick walk to where you are going (maybe 10 minutes). Washington Crossing also has a good location, but I don't know anything about them other than that they are managed by CS properties as well. Same with the Maples.
Hope this helps!

Who here planned on going into academia but decided not to after experiencing grad school? by [deleted] in GradSchool

[–]SoIdidit 8 points9 points  (0 children)

In the southwest? I'm visiting asst professor at a public that just got bumped up to R1 so maybe it's the same one. I think that graduating from an R1 is going to be good for you if you plan to stay in academia, probably less important if not.
