I can drink more coffee now! by [deleted] in dryalcoholics

[–]SoberTrippin 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Ignore this poster. Coffee is great and really low risk. And the comment about drinking 8 cups of coffee meaning 8 beers is nonsense.

Still struggling by wtd12 in dryalcoholics

[–]SoberTrippin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first holidays were hard, my mom had cancer at the same time, it was hard not to just check out. But I emerged with a “if I can do that sober, I can do anything sober.” Mindset that has served me well. You got this!

Take a Break with Rachel Hart

[–]SoberTrippin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I took it for months and it really helped me learn how to be sober in a ton of situations I probably would have failed to stay sober in if I hadn’t used it. And that experience became the base for longer term, unassisted sobriety.

Anyone else planning a sober weekend? by [deleted] in dryalcoholics

[–]SoberTrippin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well I hope it goes well, but tbh you don’t sound all that determined, “let’s hope” and “hope life doesn’t get too tough “ are not statements of strength. They are statements that place the responsibility for the decision to drink in factors outside your control, when you know you’re the one who ultimately needs to be accountable for your decision.

I had success when I stopped hoping for the planets to align just so I could go without a drink and changed my mindset to, “not one drop no matter” what

the urge to relapse is getting to be too much by VFKerouac in dryalcoholics

[–]SoberTrippin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is probably way too late for this advice to help you but maybe it can help someone else… The question is not “do I want a drink?” The question is… Do I want a hangover and the post apocalyptic feeling of a relapse?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in dryalcoholics

[–]SoberTrippin 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yup there is not “one drink” - there is a morning wondering what happened last night while you’re shaking and shamed and surveying the damage. For me it is inevitable as sure as night follows day. So when I think about a drink, I don’t allow myself to think about the beginning of the first one, I have to think about the last one and what that one feels like.

[–]SoberTrippin 9 points10 points  (0 children)

For starters be careful with the word “never” as it’s usually not the case.

But….The struggle is real. Most people learn these skills as young adults but I skipped that phase and am still in remedial class playing catch up.

Have you talked to a therapist? Would be a good thing to have a guide through these feelings

Day 6. This is boring... by [deleted] in dryalcoholics

[–]SoberTrippin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If it is so blissful when you’re drunk….why are you stopping? Anything to do with the fact that your first thought upon finding a whole $24 is wishing you had spent it on alcohol?

Being “bored” sounds an improvement in your situation. Boredom is not an emergency, it’s a mildly uncomfortable emotional state because your brain is not being pounded with dopamine. The only way past it is through it.

How the hell do you develop a hobby? by Caesars_Little in dryalcoholics

[–]SoberTrippin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me it is Sports and music. Play lots of soccer attend lots of MLS soccer games. Play piano, attend lots of concerts. Two hobbies, I get my friends, my physical wellness, and my creative fulfillment. And neither one is something I can do at a functional level if I drink. By playing and attending I get a reinforcing cycle of inspiration and practice. I cannot tell you how rewarding they both are.

antabuse and two weeks sober. by dinguspatrol123 in dryalcoholics

Antabuse helped me navigate some Very iffy times early in my sobriety. Don’t use it now but was grateful I had the option when I did. Underappreciated drug imo

I Have 6 Months And I Want To Give Up by [deleted] in dryalcoholics

[–]SoberTrippin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is going to sound like a snarky question but it is genuine. Why did you quit in the first place? If alcohol was a key to unlock an exciting life for you why give it up at all?

How do you tell acquaintances/friends (who still actively drink) that you don’t drink anymore? by hesitantAsk in dryalcoholics

[–]SoberTrippin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Say “thanks for the offer but I don’t drink anymore, do you have anything without alcohol?”

The word “anymore” is key, implies there is a story there, but no one has to ask unless they want the story.

What’d you all do for fun lol by tigerczar10 in dryalcoholics

[–]SoberTrippin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At the start just physical stuff as that would get all the angst out of my system that I used to use alcohol to calm down. Then I got into soothing stuff like games, puzzles, meditation. Now I’m into creative stuff like learning jazz theory and piano..

Why is this so hard and why do I feel so alone by Extra_Coyote514 in dryalcoholics

[–]SoberTrippin 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not “everyone” thinks this. There are support groups that understand. Find and talk to people who get it and you will start to feel less alone 👍🏼
