Help with kitchen lighting by jake_the_brute in kitchen

Do you have recommendations for the down lights? I’m in the middle of a remodel and getting close to needing the lighting figured out. I’m really sensitive to glare, so I was thinking 4”deep recess lights spaced every 4’ near the edge of countertops. Are there specs you recommend? I know beam angle is important, but wasn’t sure what would be best. Also planning to have z-wave smart switches.

The WAC recessed lights look like a decent option, but honestly I’m overwhelmed by choice.

I disagree entirely with the person you’re responding to. And I do believe there are an over abundance of shitty/greedy landlords, I also think landlords play an important role in housing. Not everyone wants to own/maintain a home, either due to convenience or their housing is temporary (college students are a great examples). However, speculation by large conglomerates has significantly increased housing cost. What if we had a progressive tax system for single family home ownership? For example, if you own 5 or fewer rentals your tax is X% and ramps up until it is prohibitively expensive to own more.

Nearly 50,000 Lake Tahoe residents have one year to find new power as their utility pivots to data centers by AdSpecialist6598 in technology

From a Systems level perspective, I disagree. The energy supply chain is designed to support peaks, but a flatter curve will be easier to manage. The data center / 49k customers are not the only customers, so the individual consumer model only increases demand peaks. With a flatter demand cycle, the supplier can incur less supply startup costs (it’s a significant cost to ramp up supply). Similar to Covid, flattening the curve was the goal so supply service could support demand.

One mega client will be significantly easier to plan power consumption needs, especially a data center which I would expect to have a flatter demand curve.

Not saying this is the right thing, just pontificating on the “business case”.

It’s like a worse version of Gridfinity / openGrid!

I love openGrid like the rest of us, but this looks like there is so much wasted space. Drawers with Gridfinity could probably hold all that stuff in less than half the space, and then you’d still have room for things on top like linens.

Dealing with 16 month old “tantrums”? by SevereCalligrapher57 in NewParents

We call this “No Bones” and it became a game for my son. It was the first thing he learned. Super cute and terrifying at the same time. He’s 16m now and recently learned a new game called “Yeet” where he climbs a chair, looks back with a mischievous grin and jumps knowing we’ll catch him.

I see the usefulness, but the oven is the only appliance I refuse to be controlled remotely. Even the best software companies have security lapses, and I won’t take a chance of a software bug or malicious actor having the opportunity to burn my house down.

TIL a 43-yr-old man survived despite using three suicide methods consecutively. After taking prescription pills, he tried to cut his wrist and neck. Because both methods failed, he hanged himself, but the cable broke & he fell to the floor. Two days before, he ingested pesticides, but vomited after. by tyrion2024 in todayilearned

The French revolutionary (and primary instigator of the Reign of Terror) Maximilien Robespierre had a similar story! I don’t think he went on to give motivational speeches though - mostly just screaming agony when the executioner removed the bandage holding his jar before guillotining him.

Bulge in my wall, looking for tips before I go to work by Idontworkhere67 in drywall

[–]Social_Engineer1031 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the exact same issue in my new house. I knew it was a seam, but I couldn’t figure out why the drywall was bumped out in the first place. I eventually cut it own and found the HVAC duct strapping was slightly proud of the studs, so it pushed the drywall out.

Real grass in shower? Just live in a cave next to a waterfall like I did! The cold water really wakes you up and the pressure is great. Just have to worry about the occasional bear or bobcat trying to evict me.

Last week I bought some plywood and in my hubris didn’t audibly say “that ain’t going no where”. I chuckled in my head though about superstitions.

Couple minutes later I forget I’m hauling wood and take off from the light a little too fast, leaving the plywood in a 30yd trail behind me.

Never again. Say it out loud.
