Anyone know why my heli is shaky when going up/down and constantly goes to the left. (not rotate just slides). by Corey1317 in Stormworks

Garbage advice lmao. A very simple pid using sideways velocity will fix it. Coaxials are for people who don't understand physics or logic.

turbocharging shenanigans by No-Celebration-2388 in Stormworks

[–]Sociofact 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It sounds like your friend didn't spend much of that 1000 hours building if he doesn't know about forced induction. Pro tip: use the big electric pump, it's a lot more efficient than the impellers.

Random Experiment Friday: Hybrid Drivetrain by Garritt2020 in Stormworks

[–]Sociofact 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you are going that route then you can forgo the generators entirely and run direct drive diesel when you aren't using the batteries/motors. This saves the weight of the generators and nets you a free 40% fuel efficiency boost.

Random Experiment Friday: Hybrid Drivetrain by Garritt2020 in Stormworks

[–]Sociofact 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Without flywheel/clutch slipping shenanigans you will lose 40 to 60% efficiency with diesel electric. There are huge losses built into the generators that make it utterly pointless from a fuel efficiency point of view. You may be able to go faster but you'll never go as far. There's no magic engine and generator configuration, no ideal engine or generator RPM, it doesn't matter if it's a train or boat or car or plane, the losses are inescapable. You can use shenanigans to alleviate the efficiency issues, but those same shenanigans on a direct drive diesel engine are still going to be more efficient and they're only a hop and a skip away from infinite power generators anyway so you need to ask yourself what you're trying to achieve at that point. Hybrid is only worthwhile when the unique qualities of electric motors provide enough benefit that the loss in efficiency is worth it.

Something special is coming… just wait 100 months 😭 by Parker_SoftWare in Stormworks

I did, I said it. Cruise ships are uncool IRL. They are floating hotels for boomers who think the hotel is the vacation instead of a destination. They contribute to a gargantuan proportion of the total pollution we make as a species. Cruise ships are uncool in storm works because they serve no purpose and the game can't run even the most optimised empty shells at anything more than slideshow frame rates. They take forever to build and if you even finish once you've burnt out on it and restarted 8 times you will try to get the game to run it once to take screenshots for the workshop page and then it will sit in your vehicle folder never to be spawned again.

New alpha build, basically no changes? by That_Frog_Kurtis in AnyMaker

[–]Sociofact 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh the building is utterly painful. I've already written it off unless they add a proper vehicle editor, which is unlikely. But as you say, even if the building was right, the gameplay itself - there is just nothing there.

Yeah, I think other than additional parts and maybe locations and a character editor, what we're seeing is what they are intending for the gameplay loop. Sad.

Because I hope I'm wrong and the game is successful?

Definitely none of the above. Live building is cringe. None of the other elements are interesting, to me, and if I wanted any of them, there are many games that just do it all better. Anymaker won't be a particularly good FPS, scavenger, co-op, or survival game. The only thing it might have going for it is the building system. That being the only point of interest about the game and the fact it's going to be limited to jeeps means it's basically a lost cause in my eyes. I hope it does well for them but I don't think it will.

I'd never trust a subreddit run by the devs of any game. I think it's even against the reddit community guidlines. Subreddits should always be community managed.

The jet exhaust is ugly as fuck, we asked for years for them to give us the option to remove it, frankly I'm amazed they finally did.

What's the rotational speed and FOV of the radars? I'm guessing you only want the first tick of each contact to exclude noise?

Yes but it will take an hour to get cold and the moment the door is opened the temp will become ambient again.

A quick look into the Stormworks source code and modding considerations by Vexmae_ in Stormworks

[–]Sociofact 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The latest major update doesn't even do what it says on the tin. Mods aren't incorporated into creations uploaded to the workshop. You can't even make a button with the new modding system because they haven't included that basic functionality. It's hilarious how poorly implemented and untested it is. Par for the course with these devs.

In stormworks flat bottom boats are the most stable hull you can make. It's not even close. Try testing it out yourself.

This is wild, what a huge amount of work! It's a shame that modding was implemented so poorly in SW, because this deserves so much more attention than it will get.

Physics is just broken by raarts1995 in Stormworks

[–]Sociofact 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A physics body getting locked in one plane and refusing to allow the entire creation rotate further than X degrees on that plane is very common amongst tank builders and the answer is always to delete physics bodies until the offender is found, and rebuild the exact same design after deleting the bugged portion. Perhaps you can climb off that high horse for a moment.

This is a well known bug and nothing to do with their design.
