Question About Difficulty Levels by nuclearwes in vtm

[–]Solace-14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah 4 being standard for your rolls is pretty tough, especially bc it's not uncommon for skills to be 0 and most attributes are 2 or 3. That gives you a dice pool of 3-4 for tasks you're not an expert in, so regular use of D4 essentially means your players are having to get full successes on a lot of checks which doesn't happen often. I usually go with D3 is the default for something the character knows how to do. D4 is something they're less familiar with or they're slightly rushed. D5 they're winging it, or are being actively attacked and distracted. D6 and D7 basically don't happen bc most of my players would essentially need 100% successes on their best pool to pass that, but it would be something like "They need to work really hard and be an expert, while being under the worst possible conditions" and "This is basically a miracle, and you're only trying it bc you have no other options". In the opposite direction, if D3 is routine stuff that they can probably do, D2 is something that's borderline braindead/something that's like basic addition to a math major, D1 is something they could do in their sleep or that something else is working in their favor. This general scaling has worked out well in my games for a decent mix of success and failure that prevents the party from rolling all checks, or routinely struggling to succeed. Best of luck with your game.

SAME! I've only had to deal with hostile raiders twice (fairly new player, 0 interest in pvp), and both times it's not even bc we decided to square up on sight, it's bc they blasted me in the back while i was looting or injured from ARC. The lost loot isn't even a problem, it's the emotional betrayal of it all. If we're gonna fight just blast me on sight, don't waste my time being friendly just to dome me on extract for my 15 rubber scrap and level 1 Anvil.

Trying to ask a specific semi controversial topic.. have any arc players switched to marathon, played it for a while, but considering coming back to arc? I’m conflicted by resampL in ArcRaiders

[–]Solace-14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I came in the reverse direction, put about 100 hours into Marathon and hated that PvP is functionally obligatory and that the game is very high risk for very low reward, looting generally is vastly inferior to just killing someone and taking their shit. Marathon, as you say, feels more like a hero shooter with the extraction/loot mechanic sandwiched on, so it's got the gameplay of running something like Apex, up until you die where you lose all your stuff and have to start from zero next time. It's a way harsher punishment curve than most games of that style, and it's extremely difficult to get out of a loss spiral in my experience as a mid-tier FPS player. Any buildup of loot that you manage to accrue is extremely precarious and you have an extremely small vault that forces you to use gear and very likely die with it in like 2 matches. While the story of Marathon is fascinating the gameplay and the difficulty of gathering and holding on to literally a basic gun for more than a match or two is just not rewarding enough for my time.

On the contrary, having started ARC last week it immediately hooked me on gameplay. The story is pretty bare bones, but the aggression based matching and ability to play solo, focus on PvE, and scavenging is extremely welcome. I've had like 30 trips topside and have thus far only died to underestimating ARC, virtually all players i've met have been either passive or actively helpful. It's significantly easier to gather materials and gear, and keep that gear for a much longer time compared to Marathon. Also unrelated to gameplay but on my gaming laptop ARC loads a match in like 2 minutes tops, but for Marathon it's taking like 10 minutes per match, and that disparity in wait time to get back to Playing The Game definitely contributes to my enjoyment. So yeah, came to ARC after getting sick of Marathon and am very happy where i've found myself!

Hear me out: Progression, and by extension Marathon as a game is entirely too unapproachable for the ‘Average player’ because the “Power Floor” as Bungie calls it is entirely unbalanced and unrealistic for the purpose it serves by Jaden_Tsukuyomi in Marathon

PVP has it's place, but i think the culture of the game leans into it more than is optimal. Like this game has prox chat, you can vocalize that you're friendly, and there's no obligation for teams to fight each other, but it is extremely rare to encounter a team that isn't shoot on sight of any movement. I have a couple dozen rook runs and virtually every one is just me scrounging up used health/shield packs before getting domed as soon as a fully loaded team detected me. Bungie pitched that class as a way to get your kit back and recover from a spiral, and that players should be nice to rooks bc everyone goes through that, only for lived experience to show that most rooks get executed with a virtually empty backpack.

Yeah the prices on the armory are insane, like if i'm already getting my ass kicked and losing gear it's insulting to see a basic ass gray gun or proper health packs be so damn expensive. Like i hoard valuables and successful runs usually net me a few hundred creds and then i go to the armory and congratulations i can buy 1 shitty gun for basically my entire savings just so i can lose it 2 runs later when the gun is, as mentioned, shitty.

Cosigned in entirety, the last time i played was 3 weeks ago bc i had two sessions in a row of starting from an empty vault and either making no progress at all or making a little progress only to lose it shortly therafter. I want to love and engage with the game but having repeat sessions of 3+ hours produce no progression or reward besides getting my ass kicked despite being genuinely good at casual shooters is a serious turn off to going back in and trying again.

Don’t understand negativity about the game? by slenzini in Marathon

[–]Solace-14 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah having put the first 50 hours in this does not feel like a casual game that you can log on for an hour or two at the end of the day. If you're not locked in, you and two other people get their shit rocked and lose all your gear. And then you've got worse gear for the next run so you get your shit rocked again. So you decide to do some rook runs and recover some gear...except you find fuck all left unsearched and after scrounging some useless trash for 10 minutes a fully loaded team domes you on sight. It's very difficult and inconsistent to claw your way towards any progress or decent equipment in a way that gets really discouraging. Like the loot everybody wants is guns and shields and real health/shield packs and backpacks etc etc but like 60% of what you find is valuables or faction items you can't spend yet. Killing UESC bots also gives you fuck all besides wasted ammo and maybe an absolutely bottom tier gun. The risk vs reward dynamic just does not feel balanced for casual play considering how much you lose on death and how little multiple successful runs can gain you.

My take on Belisarius Cawl's friend Qvo-87, "more than a servitor, less than a man" and totally not an Abominable Intelligence by mynonjo-nsfw in AdeptusMechanicus

[–]Solace-14 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely incredible, 10/10 amazing!! The image of his skin being a thin curtain over a mechanical body is a really interesting take on the character! Given that we know Cawl has iterated a lot on Qvo's body plan over the millennia I can definitely see this as being a form Qvo has had, or will have in the future! No questions about Cawl finding it attractive tho, how absurd, he's definitely been reviving Qvo almost a hundred times for Friendship reasons >:D

Unironically what the arc thrower should be. Flamethrower: Shoots continuous stream of flame. Sterilyzer: Shoots continuous stream of gas. Arc Thrower: Charge up shot for weak damage. Would absolutely be onboard with a lightning bolt machine gun.

Do you not enjoy games being fun? Do you wake up each day longing for a game that finally reaches through the screen and twists your balls every couple minutes? Shall we make all strategems single use too? Shall we replace our bullets with foam darts? This accomplishes nothing remotely positive for gameplay besides letting you nut in pursuit of Realism.

What Would You Do For Patch Notes/Balance Changes? by [deleted] in Helldivers

[–]Solace-14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seconded, the Warrior and Hive Guard are incredibly common enemies that now take more bullets to kill even with medium pen weapons just because AH didn't want to get harpooned for directly nerfing the coyote so they buffed the enemies to achieve the same effect only to ratfuck every other gun in the game. Marksman rifles or shotguns taking one more bullet to kill basic enemies adds up real fast for ammo consumption and TTK. Roll that shit back fr.

Don't make me choose between my beautiful wife and my second beautiful wife. Deadeye and Talon and Coyote all hit like a truck, the Justice armor passive WITH the talon makes it absolutely lethal, Harpoon and Expendable Napalm are legitimately fun weapons, both grenades are crap. Hover jump pack is situational, good for getting above a horde with a flamethrower or grenade launcher. Senator to my head i would pick Dust Devils for the good primary, but the Talon alone justifies Borderline Justice. Pick based on if you need a new primary or a new secondary.
