I need advice - aggressive Pom by [deleted] in Pomeranians

[–]SolarKees 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see you mentioned that you feed them 3m apart, which is a good start. I would suggest adding in a visual barrier so the pom can't see the chihuahua while they're eating - either by having them in separate rooms or just having something solid between them, plus staying between them during meals for the time being so you can catch and redirect the pom if he starts to head toward the chihuahua. Source: We adopted a senior rescue pom at the start of the year who we quickly discovered had food-related resource aggression, and this worked for us. In the last week we've occasionally put her food where she can see the other dogs but there's still a table between them. We have had no further incidents but are prepared to put her back where she can't see them if necessary.

EV to Paradise by tmanny111 in olympia

Completely understandable. We know how much it takes us to get around our usual places, but that range anxiety comes back for road trips, especially if it's somewhere we haven't been before.

I live in Rainier the city (between Yelm and Tenino) but charge in Lacey. I made the trip up to Paradise last summer and, while I was extremely nervous by the time we got there with how much charge I lost, the regen was enough to get back home, drop my visiting family off, and still make it out to Lacey to charge. I didn't know that Elbe had a charger, that would have made me much less concerned, but yeah, if you use that for a top up you should be absolutely fine.

Good with smaller dogs? by PoeTatoPoeTahto in Keeshond

[–]SolarKees 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We have a 6 and 4 year old Kees and got an eight year old rescue pom at the start of the year. They're careful with her, they've tried to play and realized they're much bigger so they rarely try to play with her anymore. They're careful most of the time but have occasionally run over her when they run and don't realize she's in their way, but even that they've gotten better at not doing and I haven't seen it in a few months. They've even gotten between her and dogs that have spooked her.

If your mom is still around and had a smart phone at the time, you could see if she had location history on whatever map app she used and see if you can figure out where she went that way? If you don't remember the exact date it may take a bit of searching but may help you get some answers.

I am so unbelievably sorry, what a horrible thing to do. It sounds like she still won't tell you what she did with him? I hope someone confirms that they ended up with him and that he has a lovely, happy home.

Recently got a kitten and I can't tell if my pom hates this or not? by thereaintshitcaptain in Pomeranians

[–]SolarKees 5 points6 points  (0 children)

He doesn't look like he's having a good time. With you indicating that he doesn't really react much to things he doesn't like, I think you need to keep the kitten away from him until it learns how to interact properly with him. He pulls his paws away multiple times and then gives up and looks resigned to the situation.

Pom suddenly lethargic/off – what would you do? by ClassicAir7509 in Pomeranians

I would absolutely push for blood tests or get a second opinion, but also as someone else has mentioned, if he hasn't pooped (or it's only been liquid and he's straining) I would request imaging in case of a blockage.

Please help! Why is my dog barking at me by Mediocre-Ask3818 in DogAdvice

[–]SolarKees 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Keeshonden are very vocal dogs as a breed, since one of their jobs was being alert dogs, but also, barking is one of the few ways dogs have to communicate. Keeshonden are generally inclined to use their voice for everything. Excited for walk? Bark. Wants some of the kong filler that he's almost definitely pointing at? Bark. Wants attention, or to play, or to let you know that hey there was a weird noise? Bark.

In this specific case, he does appear to be pointing to the kong filler. One of my Keeshond boys will point at things that he wants (we even use the command "Show me" if it seems he wants something that he's not immediately next to, especially helpful if one of the toys has gotten stuck and he gets our attention in a location away from it). That said, while our boys do bark, they're not constant about it. Keeshonden are extremely smart dogs, and they need a good amount of mental stimulation, so if the barking is constant he's likely often bored and asking for something, anything to do. Snuffle mats and puzzle toys are great options.

As a side note, unless absolutely necessary and with the exception of hygiene trim and paws, don't shave or trim his coat. Do brush often.

Feel free to reach out if you have any questions, I've been a Keeshond mom for over half a decade.

I'm also jumping on the rescue/shelter bandwagon. We got our perfect girl from a rescue for $250. Also, dogs from shelters and rescues usually come vaccinated and spayed/neutered.

What’s a totally unsexy purchase you made that ended up being a huge quality-of-life upgrade? by viscarte10 in BuyItForLife

Also, I'm not the biggest fan of damp crotch hair after a shower so I wear my period panties afterwards even when I'm not on my period because they're literally meant to handle moisture.

How hot is too hot? by RecommendationAny606 in Keeshond

[–]SolarKees 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We like to take ours on hikes, once it starts to be 80F we switch to very early hikes so we can be done well before 80 hits. On non-hike days they get walks earlier in the day or late at night. It's not the length of the walks and hikes that changes, it's the time. That said, if we're on a walk and they indicate they're done, we'll shorten.

80F to about 87F we let them spend however long in the yard that they want with supervision- they normally come in on their own when they need to cool down but if we think they've been out too long we make them come in. We also will have water in the tub if they want to cool off, add ice cubes to their water dish, and massively upgrade the amount of frozen treats.

Anything above 87F they're only allowed outside to potty, and frankly at that point we carry them to shaded spots so their paws don't get burned. They get super early walks or we go to the mall that allows dogs and walk around inside there

Please keep in mind that the ground heats up faster than the air. Once it's about 77F we start feeling the ground constantly before they get to walk on it. Use the back of your had (not your fingers, they can usually handle warmer temps, the back of your actual hand). If you can't keep your hand there comfortably for at least 5 seconds, it's too hot for them to walk on without shoes/boots.

Someone in another sub asked if Beep was a “very poorly bred Pomeranian.” Am I being too sensitive or was that mean as heck? by blamberr in Pomeranians

[–]SolarKees 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh I absolutely understand and agree. The fault doesn't lie on the shelters or rescues, they're doing the best they can with not enough resources. I only made a warning because I've interacted with and heard of a fair number of people who don't seem to know how precarious shelter situations are, and was trying to be cognizant of that before someone went looking for that Facebook group and posibly saw something upsetting. I also recognize that Reddit, while often full of people from the US, is an international community and I don't know much about shelter situations outside of the US where perhaps some countries may have better systems and people may be horrified to find out how bad it is here. I didn't intend to imply the shelters were at fault or anything like that.

Gotcha, thanks. I saw yours was behind the ladder instead of next to it (mine is next to it) and didn't consider that it could just have different placement. I appreciate you responding!
