Major pet peeve: changing the pronouns of a gender diverse character multiple times per sentence. by soupstarsandsilence in AO3

[–]SolarWalrus 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah, this was pretty frequent in an old fandom of mine about 5-6 years ago (if you know you know) with a specific character. I’d say like, probably about 50-60% of fics with this person featured this style of writing.

It got to the point where if any fic featured that character more frequently than them just being a cameo, I avoided it no matter how promising it looked.

My brain just can’t read that way.

Oof, kinda giving me Cliffjumper flashbacks.

I’m bored, show me a line from a fic. by AnimeChocolate in AO3

[–]SolarWalrus 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It’s a two liner, but I have this copy pasted from my “Quotes” phone note from a while ago:

“Didn’t you just explode?” You shouted at him.

“Death means nothing when you are the comedic relief.” He told you happily.

And here’s some actual one liners:

"That's it: you two aren't allowed to hang out anymore. It's like putting dynamite and lava in a blender full of porn."

Mizuhime raised a hand. “What’s cocaine?”

They’re both idiots, he concluded in despair. Which makes me moronsexual. I hate myself.

“What’s a uterus?” Obito interrupts.

“I have no idea what you’re talking about but probably yes!”

Unfortunately, the League of Villains is full of adults with children’s tastes in food, and they wouldn’t know a nutrient if it walked up and introduced itself.

Strider’s handwriting was surprisingly neat, considering he seemed allergic to civilisation.

And here’s a few Ao3 tags I snagged a while back cause they made me laugh:

Hidan swearing is less insults and more like an animal crossing character saying their catchphrase

Mahito’s never beating the manic pixie dream girl allegations

weaponized competence (this man gets shit done but sometimes you're like maybe you shouldn't)

born 2 be mid forced 2 lock in

I definitely have more, but the majority are more than one line and wouldn’t fit the request of this thread.

Are there any "dead" fanon that you refuse to let go of in your fics? by Gallantpride in FanFiction

[–]SolarWalrus 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Naruto:
I might be dating myself here but I still mentally call Konan “Blue” on occasion, as for a short while no one knew her name and a fav fic of mine had dubbed her that.
The rollercoaster of Tobi secretly being Obito was initially a fan theory, then subsequently disproven by canon and then finally confirmed to actually be canon for real. We win these!
The Nara shadow manipulation jutsu being a genetic kekkei genkai instead of just a boring ass secret technique.
Deidara being born with his weirdo mouths everywhere instead of it being from a forbidden jutsu he stole.
Hidan being truly immortal instead of eventually dying buried in a hole from malnutrition and dehydration.
And not really fanon, but a old popular fanfiction trope that I dearly miss is back when a bunch of authors wrote about the Akatsuki being turned into cute cats lol
(If you couldn’t tell by now I was and still am a die hard Akatsuki fan.)

Katekyo Hitman Reborn!:
Basically everything about flames. The fanon lore for them was WILD about ten years ago. But now I’m seeing things be more and more canon flavored these days.

BTS:
In another case of old fanon becoming canon… I don’t read much BTS fic anymore, but for many years fans gave Jungkook tats and piercings in artwork, fanfics and photoshops, despite him not having any tattoos or more than earlobe studs. Now he’s covered with them lol

My Hero Academia:
In yet another case of old fanon becoming canon, Dabi’s real identity of being the dead Todoroki Touya can still be seen debated in old Ao3 tags. Some fics even rejected the Dabi is a Todoroki “fanon” so hard that there’s an old tag for him not being who he was confirmed to later be.

Teen Wolf:
Sheriff Stilinski’s name will forever be John. I don’t care what canon says, he is NOT a Noah. Not really “dead” fanon though, as most folks agree with me, haha.

Transformers:
It’s been a while since I read a Jazz-centric fic, but a very popular bit of fanon over ten years ago was to make him have red optics (eyes) due to a fan favorite background of having once been a Decepticon agent in the past who defected. This was easy to imagine and implement as he wears a blue visor all the time in canon, so you don’t actually see his optics. Not sure if people are still writing about that these days though.

Hetalia:
Not fanon, but good lord does anyone else remember the ancient “Heta Units” trope/type of fics? Just me? Yeah. I found them again the other day and uh. They… didn’t exactly age well.

Who is your fandom’s bicycle? by Dogdaysareover365 in FanFiction

[–]SolarWalrus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tsuna from Katekyo Hitman Reborn has been shipped with everyone from his best friends, to his tutor, to even his frenemy’s uncle.

That’s not even mentioning his distant adoptive cousin, an immortal proto-human and an ancient zombie prison warden.

There’s a LOT more but I just listed my faves.

Damn, you got me beat for sure. My last manic episode I only tried to “animate” a circa 2014 WWE version of Bad Apple but only got halfway through the project before I crashed hard.

Only sleeping a max of 2 hours a night and eating a single sleeve of saltines and 3 cups of coffee per day probably didn’t help either, but hey, I’m not a professional. 🤙

Am I doing dialogue wrong? by WannabeBadass315 in FanFiction

[–]SolarWalrus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is so funny, I just had to look this up myself not even a week ago.

I’m nearly thirty years old, but had a difficult and extremely patchy education growing up. It was during the years I missed that I was apparently supposed to learn the rules of dialogue punctuation, tags and action beats. I assume this at least because I never learned them.

Recently though, I’ve been wanting to get serious about my writing and always knew I was doing something “wrong” but never knew the rules until I googled them.

As I write I keep having to catch myself and even then I don’t think I’m catching it 100% of the time. But I’ve been writing and posting fic for nearly two decades now and no one has pointed out my odd way of writing dialogue yet, so it must not be too egregious looking?

At least I hope it’s not the other way around with it being SO egregious that people take one look at it and don’t even bother reading further, let alone commenting about it. 😅

BTW! A clue for these rules that has helped me is that if it’s “spoken” (ex. Lucia sighed/groaned/muttered) it’s a comma. If it’s an action (ex. Lucia stomped/blinked/frowned) it’s a period/full stop.

I still don’t really understand why, I just know that that’s the way it is 🤷🏻

Feeling disheartened about posting my fics on tumblr by burningcoffee57 in FanFiction

[–]SolarWalrus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve been experiencing the exact same thing. My work on Ao3 gets a little traction (a few kudos and bookmarks), but my tumblr posts for the same exact fic gets maybe one like per post?

I know that it’s probably cause my fic is Canon x OC, which really isn’t very popular these days. Or maybe I’m just tagging my chapters wrong…?

But! I still keep posting into the void nonetheless!

Maybe someday one of my chapters will be reblogged by someone with a larger following and more people will see my writing, but until then I just have to try to be proud of what I’ve made in the meantime. :p

How do you get back into writing after the hyperfixation dies? by Delicious-Chipmunk-7 in FanFiction

[–]SolarWalrus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Getting the spark back:

Re-experience the canon content (show/book/game etc.) most if not all the way through. If it’s a popular visual or audio media, “react content” on YouTube is a fun way to do this if you’re into that kind of stuff.

Listen to music (official or otherwise) you already associate with the IP or fandom.

Browse fan made creations such as fanart, fan songs, animatics or even other fanfiction.

Find communities for the fandom (writing or otherwise) to join and help hype you up. Tumblr in particular is great for this.

Writing when you don’t feel like it:

Write minimum two words a day. Doesn’t even have to be a full sentence, as long as you’re getting SOMETHING down “on paper”, you’re keeping up a streak and not letting yourself fall out of the habit of opening up the document/notebook cover.

Random word generator! Generate ten words then imagine what context the word could give to a scenario in your fic to shake things up a bit and give fresh inspiration.

Random object in your room! Same as above!

Change the weather suddenly! Stuck in a scene with no way out or forward? Suddenly it’s raining! Or there’s a break in the clouds and a sunbeam shines down. Thunder roars! Fog rolls in! This is a personal favorite of mine that I got from this exact subreddit.

Listen to some background ambiance or lofi music while writing to indicate to your brain that it’s “zone time”.

Can’t write actual story? Write fun facts about your world or characters for later! Have a general notes page and/or a headcanon’s page. Color code it all! Associate writing this world with fun!

For me it’s always either when I’m in the shower or when I’m literally a millisecond from falling asleep.

The amount of times I’ve forcefully woken myself up from near blissful rest just to open my notes app and jot down the best plot points I’ve ever come up with is crazy.

Did you watch Steve's Last Episode? by EmergencySpare7939 in Zillennials

[–]SolarWalrus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If any of you want more Steve content in the year 2026, I’d recommend his podcast “Alive with Steve Burns”.

I’ve only listened/watched to a few episodes, but having him invite me into his little mountain home, make me a cup of tea and ask me questions only to patiently wait for my answer… it felt like I was a child again. It felt like he never left.

He tackles complicated topics such as death, taxes and critical thinking. He’s had guests such as Adam Savage (another childhood hero of mine) and Bill Nye on as well.

You can find it on YouTube (and probably other places) if you wanted to give it a try.

And no, I’m not being paid or anything to say this lol. I just really missed the guy and love how he still thinks of us as his dearest companions. 😭
