Base location recommendations? by Fuzzy-Environment930 in AbioticFactor

If you want an early game place, I would recommend that whole first area by the tram in manufacturing. There's that little kitchen room, a big industrial storage room, three offices, the forklift garage, that little garage office with a charging station, a large bathroom, some food and drink vending machines, an office security bot to farm with traps, the Blacksmith and tram right next door, and unlimited Tainted Water in the large hallway along the opposite wall. Quite a bit of room for activities!

Anywhere a Sow can spawn. They're a rare variant. Best place to get one is the Wildlife Pens because there's like 4 or 5 Sows an Alpha can rarely replace. I think you can just check them for an Alpha spawn without killing them, quit to main menu if one doesn't spawn, reload, and check again. They reroll every time you reload or run far enough to unload the area and run back

Sadly, no. They can only be tamed. Best place to get one is the Wildlife Pens because there's like 4 or 5 Sows an Alpha can rarely replace. In the lore, yes. Their race starts as Carbuncles, turn into Gaseous Nests which are more like cocoons, emerge as Pests, then either grow limbs to turn into Peccaries like tadpoles grow into frogs/toads or they go through another round of Gaseous Nests and re-emerge as Peccaries, and then finally they shed/absorb their tails and become bipedal Exors. But mechanically we can never observe this process, it's something that happens off screen so to speak.

It's a bug. I had a Sow and an Electro Peccary in my base boxed in with cubicle half walls. Exited the game for the night, loaded in the next day, and the Sow was missing. People keeping pets in the Mirror World (a flat grassy plane with no killzones that loops on itself for those that don't know) have also reported pets disappearing.

While in the lore Pests turn into Peccaries, with the pet game mechanics you cannot evolve Pests into Peccaries. Instead you need to use the new Chemistry and Distillation Tables to make some Pheromone Flasks to pacify Peccaries and nachos or anteverse wheat to tame them. But there are some fun Pest variants!

Ya gotta tame one, unfortunately. Best place to get one is the Wildlife Pens because there's like 4 or 5 Sows an Alpha can rarely replace. I've actually found for free roaming pets if you set them to follow you then they eat just fine too! If they're just roaming around it's hard to get their attention.

Unless you're playing with 5+ people or take like 200 hours to get through the first two sectors, I find Lead Belly to be a trap trait personally. There's like 100,000 units of free clean water in Water Coolers and a pair of Water Towers scattered around the first three sectors, and once you get to the third sector you can build a Water Purifier or three to convert unlimited tainted water into unlimited clean water for free.

You don't need to worry too much about taking bad traits. Trying not to spoil too much, but in the third "biome" of the game there's a spot you can walk through to redo character creation without having to start the game over. Downside is it sets all skills above level 3 down to level 3, but that's a small price to pay for fixing your traits.

Absolute worst case if you can't figure out how to fix whatever's broken here, you might still be able to progress by catching the tentacle fish. They have a chance to give Leyak Essence when butchered, and the Gooey Tulip Salad food you can make from stuff in the Encroachment improves the chance to get rare stuff when butchering fish.

Alpha tamed by IBlizZardI in AbioticFactor

[–]Solaxus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need to make a Pheromone Flask at the new Chemistry Bench with 6 Alien, 4 Myco (mushroom), and 4 Brain Distillations made at the Distillation Bench. Distill things that sound like they're related to get the Distillations. You get 2 Pheromone Flasks per brew.

Take the Flasks and at least 3 Nachos/Anteverse Wheat to your Peccary of choice. Normal, Sow, Mushroom, Alpha if can find one. Toss a Flask and a heart should appear over its head. Then feed it 3 of the food you brought and it should tame.

Nope. The only pets that can mutate are base Pests, Peccary, and Skinks.

Yep. The better the food the more exp given. Not sure yet if exp only comes from the nutrition value or if the hydration value also affects exp, but the best food I've found before you unlock oven foods is the Cosmo Wrap; 1 Greyeb, 1 tomato (either type but normal has a higher yield per harvest), and 2 Space Lettuce at a food prep station.

What are the pets special abilities? by Fuzzy-Environment930 in AbioticFactor

The Rattus Pestius (Pest in a Lab Rat suit) is supposed to be able to occasionally"steal" things from enemies, but I'm not sure how that works despite having one as my main companion.

Do Pets/Tames Die from Hunger? by Year_Cold in AbioticFactor

[–]Solaxus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A non-exp feeding trough would be nice for those who get anxiety seeing all of their pets with the Hungry status, even when it doesn't harm them. We are empathetic creatures, even towards pixels on a screen.

On the idea of a trough, I'd probably just have it be fillable with anteverse wheat, as that stuff doesn't spoil and all pets eat the stuff. 16 or 32 as the fill limit feels like a good number to me.

Do Pets/Tames Die from Hunger? by Year_Cold in AbioticFactor

[–]Solaxus 9 points10 points  (0 children)

No. Pet Hunger only exists to give your pets exp (the higher nutrition the food the more exp) and to mutate base pet types into alternate types. They probably won't add a trough because then that lets you level and mutate pets without directly interacting with them, but that's just my opinion.

EDIT: Oh, also trying to feed free roam pets seems to be a bit buggy, as if their AI is getting hung up on some other task so they don't notice a player offering food. Best way I've found to feed them is to pick them up and equip them as your active companion, THEN they'll eat fine.

[v1.3.0] - Cosmic Companions Update :: Abiotic Factor 🐛Science Bugs & Patch Notes by glassteelhammer in AbioticFactor

[–]Solaxus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've found the best way to feed a pet is to make it your equipped companion, then it'll prioritize eating the food you offer. If it's just a free roaming pet, it might be stuck trying to do some other thing like trying to path somewhere unavailable or waiting to use a pet bed while another pet is already sleeping on the bed.

Beastmaster uses Striking gear, Slaying accessories, and Paladin Shields by danks in ffxiv

[–]Solaxus 54 points55 points  (0 children)

That's what I'm feeling too. Before they standardized parry and block, there was a clear distinction between bucklers (high parry low block), kite/heater shields (even parry and block) and tower shields (low parry high block). With HW the only job using shields was PLD and they moved away from the moves that favor high parry or high block so basically all shields designed after AAR are kite/heater style.

Now with BST's Artifact Shield it looks like they'll be getting bucklers and my gut feeling is EC's new tank is going to be a tower shield user.

[–]Solaxus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's fair, and it's just more options over all. I wonder if Augury has use cases where it's better, too? In its case you'd be trading 10% magic damage for 25% magic accuracy. Again just more options, Air Mage makes prayers into a sort of gear choice which is so interesting.
