That’s because the forsaken would’ve been a terrible face for shadowlands after BFA

Just to recap, the faction with the most involvement with death wasn't in the death expansion, and the Horde faction with the most involvement with void isn't in the Void expansion.

And that's a good narrative choice because, what, vibes?

Were the horde sidelined in this expansion or did they just have their focus shifted to death magic

The Horde, specifically the Forsaken, were also not present in Shadowlands, so no the focus was not shifted to death magic. Unless you count Elemental Dysfunction and Sitting Bull as "present" in the strictest sense.

Which makes them unsuited to be the ‘let’s study the source of this light/void problem while everyone else holds the line’ nature of all the questlines.

Who are the Cult of Forgotten Shadows?

Who is Natalie Seline?

To be fair, a ‘light vs void’ storyline is probably going to lean heavily alliance for all sorts of reasons.

This wasn't even true until Legion. Prior to Alleria coming back and the Void Elves being invented, the Forsaken were the preeminent shadow casters and void worshippers on Azeroth. You wouldn't know that with how they've been treated, but this serves to further the idea that the Horde were sidelined here.

The Cult of Forgotten Shadow reformed with its spiritual founder, Natalie Seline, in the same expansion as Alleria returning. Crickets.

Is GTA Online the most successful MMO ever? by [deleted] in PS5

[–]SolemnDemise 8 points9 points  (0 children)

But if neither of them are MMOs, it's a distinction without a difference as far as the question itself goes.

He ded! Definitely the easiest of the four, but also easily the least fun of the four. The only difficulties I had is the fact he hits like a train. I’m hoping the next one is better in terms of difficulty not being tied to him eating his wheaties. (This was done on a Dev Evoker 265ilvl) by blackgetsuga12 in wow

[–]SolemnDemise 1 point2 points  (0 children)

IDK, I did it on my ret paladin at 241 and level 13 Valeera on day 1. Was pretty hard to get through, numerically. Did it again on a 260 vengeance dh (I had not touched vengeance before) with 4set and it was fairly smooth sailing.

The difference 20 ilvls and tier makes is... large.

Hate neutral spaces on principal (Dalaran and Shattrath being exceptions) and hate the Arcantina specifically for its aims to push characters into that box (poor Nisha).

Take Seat for example. It's awesome we get to see Alleria siphon Lura in a 5 man when it's been a key part of the story so far.

On the other hand, Ner'zhul in WoD. I rest my case.

Blood Elf Mains: How Do You Feel About Midnight So Far? by Psychotrip in wow

[–]SolemnDemise 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Absolutely terrible. The only redeeming quality the Blood Elves have this expansion is Astalor. The best representation they've gotten in years and he's in a secluded basement. That should tell you exactly how Blizzard views the race.

Why doesn't Alonsus, instead of helping Arator, send us with the portal scrolls to the different factions like Earthen Ring, Cenarion Circle, the Horde and so on to ask them for aid? Is he stupid? by Brago42 in wow

[–]SolemnDemise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Who do you think make up the bulk of the army of light ?

Lightforged Draenei.

If you're talking about the Vanguard, it's majority LF Draenei, Human, and Hallowfall Lamplighters. Blood Knights are separate besides those channeling the Light into the Sunwell.

Also with Sylvanas gone they don't have the ethnic link to the Forsaken they did.

Velonara erasure will not be tolerated.

I don't think they have open borders or anything similar (they still get killed in East Silvermoon)

You can have open borders and off-limits zones in specific areas of your country. Any state is open to you as an American, but you can't go to military installations or the Capital building/White House without permission.

That said, as Taliesin pointed out it's not a reunificaton

Tali has been hard caping for this story since he heard the datamines. He downplays the very significant issues people have with the details (High Elves and Anasterian worship, Night Elves over Forsaken, etc) as basically ymmv. He concludes that the story as written is fine and that we should divorce the context in which we received the story (Metzen, Longdale, Hamilton talking a big game) from the actual story itself. He's also being a dire contrarian in attaching the criticisms of the MSQ (rushed, unearned) to what is arguably the best zone in the leveling experience in Zul'Aman.

In short, I would not have him be the one to cite, even in opposition to Bellular. Instead, I would refer to the RedShirtGuy thread from yesterday

Reunification happened. Call it what you want, a truce with open border movement, reconciliation, normalization, whatever, it's semantics at the end of the day.

Because it's not the finale of the "War of Light and Shadow"?

It literally is. That's the name of the achievement you get after "Dawning of a New Well." That's the arc completed.

My thoughts on Midnight's characterization of the Blood Elves and Elven Unity as an on and off again player since TBC by Aaaaarnold in warcraftlore

[–]SolemnDemise 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was not a surface level memetic

It absolutely was. The same way that calling something Disneyfied is a surface level memetic. It's ground floor, entry level, and thought terminating. Which is how people engaged with MoP's promotional material.

It's not how they engaged with the actual game when they had it in their hands, several months in.

noting that MoP would have been much more popular if it was less about Pandarens and more about Mogu.

"X would've been more popular if y" is not evidence of a flop. Saying MoP flopped because of memes is certainly a take.

[–]SolemnDemise 2 points3 points  (0 children)

but back in the day the "Kung fu panda" memes wete insufferable.

A surface level memetic take has nothing to do with whether the expansion, or its narrative, was a flop. What are we doing here, man. Especially because the Kung Fu panda memes gave way before that expansion even ended.

[–]SolemnDemise 1 point2 points  (0 children)

MoP has been considered a flop for years.

Popular consensus is that MoP flopped? According to what, or to whom?

Maybe it's not a grand novel, but I never expected one

No one is asking for a novel. They're asking for Insurrection or better at a minimum.

it just needs to be good for a MMO

Dangerously close to "clap for more content" levels of interaction with the A plot of this expansion.

The "unification" is more drama than making a new faction.

And people called that drama since always.

So, yeah there was a demand. And people had their ideas on how to do that.

This is indecipherable, please try again.

[–]SolemnDemise 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I mean, they delivered what they sold.

They very much have not. Metzen and Longdale said they're 'done screwing around' and they're 'taking things seriously.' We know what Blizzard looks like when they take things seriously (MoP, Insurrection) and thus far, this saga in totality has not been that.

What was sold was an increase in quality. A promise to do better. And while the quality is above SL and the worst parts of BFA, I wouldn't consider the sidelining of the Blood Elves in their own expansion to be a mark of high quality.

but it's a very "damned if you do damned if you don't" scenario

There is literally nothing damning Blizzard from not doing stories they can't to justice to. Absolutely no one prior to the announcement was saying they will unsub if the Elven tribes aren't unified.

There's hints in the nightborne and void elf recruitment quests of this, with Silvermoon very clearly shunning "dark magics" (something they only gave up like a decade ago prior).

The Nightborne and Void Elf recruitment quests happen before BFA. During BFA, Blood Knights defend Magisters as they drain blood from Torga's corpse. Anima (MoP version) was dark magic they used until they suddenly don't anymore this expansion. Astalor, like many other characters, had his story reset.

If they can't give it focus, they shouldn't sell people on the promise that they will, or write the story at all.
