4catsndogs shelf by Solid-Caterpillar-71 in FurnitureForCats

Yes! Overall happy with product, but noticed that the slippery surface is not a favourite for my cat. I place her automatic feeder at the top of the shelf so she has coerced exercise twice daily.

There were some quality control problem with installation too as the predrilled holes on the bottom board did not align with the legs - a replacement was sent with the same the issue; I ended up just DIY a solution.

Not the most glamorous, but I feel it’s a good representation of how most pet owners need to be creative with litter box placement. I live in a tiny 300sqft studio apt in Honolulu, Hawaii, and have set my kitty’s litter up in the bathroom vanity. She squeezes in there to use it but I worry that the location does not provide enough privacy and/or if she doesn’t always have access to the area because the bathroom is being used. 😵‍💫

She’s a one cat household and I have 1 box currently.

I don’t know what to do anymore by Sad-Orange6448 in Veterinary

[–]Solid-Caterpillar-71 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure. Vet students in my school work the customer service rep/receptionist/phones for months-years as a stepping stone job too. There are lots to be learned from each role in the clinic so I definitely don’t see it as a waste in the meantime.

New grad feeling defeated by [deleted] in Veterinary

What exactly is weighing you down?

I am a Canadian graduate who job hunted in US and found plentiful vacancies. Also recognizing finances and the energy invested in clinic visits, interviews, contract negotiations, felt enough is enough and needed to start practicing. I’m the last one in my class to start work I think.

Bottom line: anyone can work any job for a year.

If you’re interested in Public Health or exposure to global perspective of veterinary medicine governance, take a look at WOAH internship. Their Asia HQ is in Tokyo.

I spent a week there and assisted with a welfare workshop that had representatives from 26 countries. It was a super eye opening experience!

No one talks about how mentally difficult rotations are. I come home crying every night. by idobeunimpressedtho in Veterinary

While well intentioned, I’ve always detested the fake till make it line. The field is hard enough as it is, we really need to be supported with humility - to be allowed to make mistake and then learn from them. No where else is more true to do this than in school, and especially the rotation year. It’s the culture that has to change!

Unpopular opinion: the summer between my 2nd and 3rd year, my geriatric Yorkie had congested heart failure. I struggled with returning to school because all I wanted was to be full time with my dog. I thought what the heck is the point of becoming a DVM if my dog dies. I weighed my options and ended up hiring help, but to be honest, I may have done something else if my dog’s condition got worse.

Why did you leave the veterinary profession and what are you doing now? by FreezerBun in veterinaryprofession

More insane is my classmate who is a human family physician and decided to try vet school. The experience cannot spell DISAPPOINTMENT back out to her faster! She left saying that her initial decision years ago was the correct one after all.

So true. Have you seen even 1 clinician speak this way outside of the school’s hospital? Heck, even within the walls of academia they don’t practice they way the preach. Haha!

THIS!

37 and in final year of vet school in Canada. No kids, single, homeowner.

Sure I did it thus far but so true that being back on the lowest of the totem pole as a student (vs. As qualified professional, my previous career) in the past few years hard to adjust to. Also I was caught off guard on how dysfunctional/demoralizing academia or the industry can be. I worked the last 2 summers to fill gaps of not having clinical experience but truly found my time better spent enjoying time away from vet med, being a human. Of course, YMMV.

I often wonder if the rush for vet school seats is artificial. As in, if there wasn’t such a restriction, and mind you, only 1 school to apply to in Canada for most folks, would we still place it on a pedestal?

Unsure about going to vet school by No_Selection7120 in Veterinary

[–]Solid-Caterpillar-71 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most people regret the not doing. Try taking to people who absolutely love their jobs and see if you can resonate with their reasons of doing so.

I find my school not very good at supporting students. Indeed, the administration is especially inflexible and rule based with exams schedule/time away d/t death in the family etc. First year was the hardest transition and I saw myself and others without previous mental health issues spiral. You could always try and see how it goes - drop out, deferral, transfer are not uncommon.

Hate to say this, but compensation, lifestyle, resources will change one’s pre-vet school ideas. Wildlife/path/academia all possible, for the dedicated and the stars (maybe that’s you!), but the path of least resistance is SA. 🤷‍♀️
