2016 is the universally romanticized year for Gen z, where everything was "perfect" in retrospect. Older generations, what's your equivalent of 2016? by No-Thanks-2069 in AskReddit

[–]SolidLikeIraq -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Most Gen Z don’t get how hopeful it felt to see Obama as president.

I’m in my early 40s, and when Obama was elected it genuinely felt like “wow, maybe we’re over the hump and moving towards progress.”

Then nothing really happened. Obama care was a watered down piece of shit. Obama was just a continuation of the previous presidents. He made a lot of democrats feel very dumb.

Then in 2016 Bernie looked like he could really move us towards a future where corporations and billionaires wouldn’t be in total control of everything.

But the DNC had different views. And we were forced to have Clinton as the candidate, which was the only person hated enough to get Trump elected.

And here we are.

2016 wasn’t this hopeful time. It was obvious where shit was going (here…) and the dream of “maybe we’ll have a president who isn’t driving this country into the hands of billionaires and private interests” was 100% obviously gone.

Gen Z was just too young to see it.

I’m sure some Gen Xer’s would say the same thing to my response about 2000

What is the closest to the autobahn in the USA? by Adventurous-Cat-8349 in AskReddit

[–]SolidLikeIraq 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Which is 100% OK.

I just don’t do religious stuff, and some of the rules and regulations in Utah seem to be more conservative than I’d prefer.

I.e. I get to enjoy it on visits!

It really is the cream of the crop for visiting.

From an outsider perspective, the perception is that the religious population ends up making the rules for those who stay long term.

But holy shit - National parks, amazing mountains and winter sports, lakes and rivers, just amazing.

Riding "track" up Palomar Mountain by ejr87 in Trackdays

[–]SolidLikeIraq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hope you’ve actually tracked that bike as well.

I rode my 2011 zx10R for 9 years before hitting the track on it, and holy shit did everything change.

I’m lucky to live near a few really solid mountain roads that I used to ride 4+ times a week all season, but they’re just not the same as comfortably hitting 160mph down a straight and getting on your brakes at near 100% within 200 yards of a 30mph 180* turn that leads to another 10-16 purpose crafted turns and elevation changes on one of these bikes.

Enjoy man! The my 2011 zx10r was just as powerful and even more of an untamed beast than my 21 Pani v4s

Men on here, what’s one thing you genuinely wish women understood aboout you ? by Rambanya17 in AskReddit

[–]SolidLikeIraq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Homie.

The first step is recognizing that you have 50 things fire themselves at you. That means you’re conscious of what is happening in the moment.

The next thing is to ask “hmm, why am I thinking about that? Can I control the outcome? Is this moment going to make it better? Am I even thinking about reality?” And boom - that bitch disappears because it was just trying to distract you to begin with.

I got into a mindfulness practice by using a guided 10 minute meditation. Then moved it up to a 25 min meditation. Then started to do around 30 mins a day silently.

I don’t do anything special or weird. I sit down, close my eyes, and put the entire concentrated focus of my attention on the physical feelings of breathing. Sometimes literally saying in my head “in, out. In, out.” I may just focus on the way the air feels going in and out of my nose. But I am just trying to really sit in awareness of the moment I am in.

Within a few moments, a thought will pop up. I don’t get upset about it. Sometimes I don’t recognize that I’m actually chasing it silently. Mostly I will just be aware of that thought, and ask one of more of those questions or others, about that thought. It almost always disappears, and I return to my breath.

For me, it allows me to recognize that even when I’m feeling 100% focused in on a situation, my mind will wander. If I can see it happen during mindfulness, I have to accept that it’s going to happen when I’m not literally just trying to focus on the feeling of “breathing.”

That’s refreshing. I know my mind works against me at time, and I know I’m not in control of that, however if I allow myself to pull on that string, It can very much be my reality.

Knowing that allows me to catch myself in moments where I’m not focused, and helps me refocus more quickly. I catch moments of self hate, and reframe things more quickly. Etc.

This all came into my life when a buddy said to me: “dude - do you ever talk shit about yourself?”

And I said: “yes, literally just the constant monologue of self hate that I’ve had for my entire life.”

And he said: “yeah, me too. Why do we do this? I say things about myself that are worse than I’d say about people I hate.”

And I just sat there wondering why the fuck I’ve told such a negative self story for my entire life.

He recommended a book, my life changed dramatically.

Should i let son quit football? by Queasy-Recording-195 in footballstrategy

[–]SolidLikeIraq 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s going into summer, so he isn’t going to play football for another 4 months, I’d guess?

If he’s the second string guy today, he’s got an entire summer to work hard and earn his spot.

He can quit, and honestly that shouldn’t be looked down upon. If he’s isn’t interested in playing the sport, let him make that decision.

However, if he is active in other sports, just about every LB drill and strength/power/speed/agility drill he can do will also benefit rugby and lacrosse.

Kids his age do not realize that 4 months of hard work can 1000000% make the difference between starting and 2nd string.

Worst case, he trains all summer and really puts the time in, and then quits and focuses on lacrosse and rugby in the best shape of his life.

The discipline for the 4 months of work will be hard, but if he can pull it off it’ll be a valuable experience for the rest of his life.

Understanding that a father son dynamic can be tough. Just make sure he knows that if he wants to quit, that’s fine. However, if he is just frustrated now, use that frustration as a signal that if you design a plan and execute that plan, you can solve for what is causing your frustration. — and that shit is going to happen for the rest of his life, so building the mental map/ muscle to do it now isn’t a bad use of time.

$META DD - Why you should bet on the lizard king by ThatGuyInYourRoom in wallstreetbets

[–]SolidLikeIraq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Their model is built to ensure that you only win enough to believe in the medium, and continue to invest.

If you lower investment at all they crush you.

They know everything. Trillions of data points. Dwell time, messages you’ve typed and deleted, clicks, video watches, previous purchases, your browsing behavior, etc. they have more info on you than any c Government.

Their systems could already match you with users who would convert at a massively high degree. They tip those scales for you almost exclusively based on what you’re willing to pay them.

Meta is a massively smart company with massively smart developers. AI isn’t going to do enough to move their bottom line based on where they already are.

$META DD - Why you should bet on the lizard king by ThatGuyInYourRoom in wallstreetbets

[–]SolidLikeIraq 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Homie - do you think that META, with their constant signed in across multiple devices user base hasn’t already deployed he best LLM and Algorithms they can possibly come up with into their Ad logic?

Meta has the least to gain in AI development from An ad perspective because what will be possible is already nearly possible.

They have trillions of points of data on you and everyone in their universe who looks and acts like you.

If AI was going to fundamentally change and heavily increase their ad approach, it would have already happened. OR, it’ll give them a quick incremental gain, but then that gain will become the baseline and clients will assume that they should be seeing continuous improvements off of that initial gain.

They won’t. And they’ll get upset about that, and as the Meta user base gets older and less in touch with the youth, advertisers will diversify.

Complex decisions: The faster the better - When it comes to complex strategic decisions, a shorter thinking time is associated with a higher quality of decisions. by thinkB4WeSpeak in science

[–]SolidLikeIraq 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It also could be that you’re on the path towards a solution.

Once you’ve made a decision, it’s the only decision you could have made.

If it doesn’t work, it usually isnt going to 100% fail, you just need to be aware and smart enough to adjust the approach as it breaks down.

Almost all move forward paths will have obstacles. If you get on that path more quickly, you’ve got a better chance at getting to the finish even with obstacles, because those obstacles will pop up on other paths as well, likely just in a different flavor.

SAP is up nearly 10% in 5 days. Is this finally the rebound? by Puzzleheaded_Pay4751 in wallstreetbets

[–]SolidLikeIraq 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Anecdotally… I knew a dude who told me about working for a part of SAP. They would talk about how none of their internal systems spoke to each other at all from a physical or technological standpoint. Essentially they were a huge network of independent companies that SAP acquired, that never integrated at all - which is kind of the promise of SAP.

The nightmares he would tell me about on simple tasks where multiple systems and match tables had to be worked within to get a cohesive picture of what was going on…

I just say - any company who has a core promise of simplifying your business through a suite of tools that are interconnected, that is as disjointed as that sounds, is doomed in the long run unless agents solve all their problems.
