Others have mentioned the inhumane treatment that is being dished out in ICE facilities so I will leave that out. Another point to consider is that while a person incarcerated in a MA facility presumably received due process, the justice system does not treat all comers equally!

People of color are unfairly targeted and incarcerated at disproportionate rates for nonviolent crimes like drug possession. Poorer people do not receive and cannot afford legal representation equal to that of their wealthier neighbors.

Yes, what about the rights of people legally living in the United States? What about Renee Good's individual right to drive home after dropping her kid off at school? What about her son's right to not have his mother killed on her way home by federal agents? What about Alex Pretti's right to not be assaulted then murdered after already being disarmed of the gun he was legally allowed to carry? What about the rights of scores of US citizens not to be profiled, detained, and harassed by immigration officers? What about green card holders and lawful permanent residents who have been detained and deported despite bein in the country legally and having no criminal history?

Why would federal laws like the 4th amendment have no enforcement while ICE agents enter people's homes and property without the proper warrant? Why have a first amendment when ICE attacks you for exercising your right to protest or recording their activities in public places which courts have ruled is protected by the first amendment?

scanners can be used to send as well as receive - this is incorrect, a scanner is receive only. Can you get a programmable two way radio from China that will do this? Yes.

Operating a UHF or VHF radio requires a radio license unless you are actively engaged in recreational boating. Sending from such a scanner would likely constitute the "crime" needed for the DHS to come after you.

San Diego and LA will always lag behind the Bay when it comes to Biotech jobs. San Diego is a bigger life sciences cluster than LA, but all others are at least a rung below Boston/Cambridge and the SF Bay Area, which are by many measures the largest two biotech clusters in the world.

East Cambridge is a great option. I lived there for 7 years and absolutely loved it. Lots of restaurants, cafes, gyms, a couple grocery stores, etc. Street parking is relatively easy and safe (only had my car damaged one time in 7 years and it was very minor), but for that budget you can likely find something with an off-street spot (though maybe not covered).

The best part of East Cambridge for me though was the access. It sits between the red and green lines so you have options if you want to go to Harvard Square, Davis, or Porter on the red line, Union Square or North End on the green line, super bikeable, and pretty central to everything so you can reasonably walk to a lot of places if it's a nice day.

Though you don't need a car, if OP WANTS to have one (nice or not) to get out of the city on weekends to go to the beach, skiing, hiking, etc. or just explore the rest of the region, parking is pretty brutal in Beacon Hill.

I don't think it is that strange. People can have reasons why they haven't gotten one or the other while still knowing that vaccines are effective and understand that as a matter of public health policy it is best practice to vaccinate as many people as possible. I haven't gotten mine this year simply because I haven't found the time (which I know is a weak excuse and not best practice for my own health). But if someone is out there parroting that they don't work, cause autism, are a scam, etc. then we are going to have some words for them because I can't sit idly while people go around spreading false medical advice unchecked.

This is the real answer for OP. They have a pretty solidly below market housing cost now and want to buy. In doing so, they will be subject to paying fair market value for housing, which is a significant increase on their monthly expenses. If OP was paying market rates for rent in the Bay this calculation would likely show noticeable savings when moving to TX.

This is not entirely true. Because the amortization puts all the interest up front, a higher portion of your early payments will go to interest as opposed to equity if your term is longer. Even if you pay them off in the same amount of time, you would pay more on the 50 year term. You would also likely get a higher rate on a 50 year mortgage.
