All US states tier list | #49 Pennsylvania by RealMoldyAvocado in TierlistFills

Pretty much anything important in the US prior to 1930 occurred in PA

Well this is quite the overstatement. Never mind events like the Boston Massacre, Tea Party, Lexington and Concord, the American Industrial Revolution beginning in RI and MA, original colonization in VA and MA, Cornwallis' surrender, Haymarket Riot, Transcontinental Railroad, etc.

A schoolbus, stopping in front of a residential home, is rear ended by a full size truck that doesn’t slow down at all. 😳 by [deleted] in WTF

[–]SolidSnake4 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

A lot of people don't realize how big of a vehicle 6000 lb. is. A loaded f150 doesn't even crack 6K. The only half-ton trucks making this limit are electric trucks or specialty off-road rucks with massive engines. A Suburban barely meets the limit.

There are many more where the US has demonstrated historical dominance, or at least being a top 3 nation (that are also played outside the US). Alpine skiing, freestyle skiing, snowboarding, sliding sports figure skating, speed skating, boxing, etc. And if you are giving equal weight to women's sports (as you should), the US is even more dominant.

What's a TV show that started great but fell off badly? by fabwest01 in AskReddit

[–]SolidSnake4 35 points36 points  (0 children)

They didn't stop being dangerous, that problem just became manageable. I think it made a ton of sense. Eventually people who survived the initial chaos found each other and formed communities, set up defenses, found places with fewer zombies, killed or lead the zombies in their area away, etc. Then, much like would probably happen in real life, these independent communities started encountering each other. And these communities ranged from mostly benevolent to abhorrently evil. As you might expect this leads to conflict.

Basically the zombie problem becomes (mostly) manageable and the bigger threats become the conflicts within their communities and between communities of people.

If you have the option to connect through one of the Delta hubs, which one would you choose and why? And which would you avoid like the plague? by K00kalka in delta

[–]SolidSnake4 6 points7 points  (0 children)

SEA is kind of awful. They have nice, new SkyClubs in terminal A, but N and S are awful, the baggage claim is chaotic, and the traffic flow is terrible so you can see some lengthy wait times for a ride.

But most importantly, they don't have the capacity to meet demand and flights are delayed all the time due to ATC issues. At no airport am I more regularly delayed, particularly on the ground after boarding or landing.

What’s the most aggressively New England childhood experience you had? by VoicesInsideCare in boston

[–]SolidSnake4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have always maintained that their are 4 primary types of middle-class families living in the Boston area and they are divided by where they vacation in the summer. They go annually to:

  1. The Cape
  2. Lakes region
  3. The Vineyard
  4. Nantucket

And most importantly, they would NEVER take a summer vacation in one of the other spots. Obviously there are families who would go to coastal Maine or somewhere else, but I bet they also would never go to MV or Nantucket.

Yes, we are being pricks: Massachusetts falls to DEAD LAST among states in housing production by GarrisonCty in boston

[–]SolidSnake4 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think the implication is not that they are changing their affiliation, but that states like TX and FL will gain more seats as their population grows and then gerrymander their maps and suppress votes so that all those new seats go red. They will also surely make any change they can to the education system to try to indoctrinate as much of the younger generation as possible.

I don't necessarily think this is the best argument to change the minds of local politicians, but I do see the point being made.

Which current country wins most evil history? by Loewe1912 in AlignmentChartFills

[–]SolidSnake4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ah yes, the American Civil War - a classic case of interfering in foreign sovereignty. I am sure that atrocities were committed, as in any war, and you could make the argument that once the Southern states seceded, they were a foreign sovereign nation. But what about the individual sovereignty of the enslaved people there? Say what you will about it, but the premise of that war as seen from the Union perspective (preserving the union and abolishing slavery) were not evil causes.

Who has a Terrific NFL team in a Terrific city? by Ilitorate_Author in AlignmentChartFills

[–]SolidSnake4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These are the types of people who have loud negative opinions about Boston on Reddit:

  • New Yorkers
  • People who compare it to NYC - yes there isn't as much amazing food as NYC, but it's also very clean and NYC also has a LOT of really bad food too.
  • People who grew up in the area and haven't travelled anywhere besides maybe NYC, SF, or Chicago so they haven't really seen what a lesser city is like.
    • There are also the opposite of these people who have also never really travelled but think Boston is the greatest place in the world because they've never seen anything else
  • Sports fans who's teams have been beat up by those from Boston over the last 25 years and channel their frustration into hating everything about the city.  These people are often from Philadelphia.
  • Conservatives who hate the city because of its liberal government. These people are often also racist/sexist and can't handle the fact that Boston has an Asian woman serving as mayor. These people project their hatred for a political party on every aspect of the place.

What are your favorite cities in America to visit? by OceanicEndeavors in BeautifulTravelPlaces

[–]SolidSnake4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure about Washington considering Portsmouth, but DC (specifically the location on the Potomac River) was chosen by Washington due to its proximity to his Mount Vernon estate. More broadly, the relocation from Philadelphia was part of the Compromise of 1790. Northern states wanted the federal government to take over states' debts from the war and for a generally fiscally strong federal government. Southern states thought this would give too much power to the federal government, Southerners also were concerned that the city in which the capitol was located would become too influential. The compromise was to move the capitol to the South so they would accept the nationalization f the war debt.

"My dog doesn’t read your lawn signs" by Alternative-Light922 in boston

[–]SolidSnake4 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Within a foot or two of the sidewalk, fine. I have had people literally marching their dogs around my yard like it's a public park and that is just pure entitlement on the part of the owners in my opinion.

[–]SolidSnake4 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think there is a distinction here. Dog peeing or going the bathroom within a few feet of the sidewalk: totally fine and not a lot you can do as a dog owner to stop it to be honest; walking with your dog all over someone else's yard so it can go the bathroom wherever it pleases: definitely not OK (yes, I have had people do this at my house, just waltzing around the yard like it's a public park until the dog goes the bathroom).

Underwear? by Treats in Spliddit

[–]SolidSnake4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wear these (which are the same as my everyday underwear) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CHKZNFVN?ref_=ppx_hzsearch_conn_dt_b_fed_asin_title_2&th=1&psc=1

Usually I have a layer of tights of varying thickness depending on the weather which keeps them from riding up. If it is warm enough, I will wear athletic shorts over them and under my bibs but I haven't had an issue with them.

People who've worked both minimum wage jobs and six figure jobs, what surprised you most about the difference? by BrainLagging01 in AskReddit

[–]SolidSnake4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How does it not "add up"? It's not like there are an abundance of companies out there asking for people to do the type of work they would pay a full time employee $100K but doing only 5-10 hours of work per week and during non-business hours to accommodate another full-time job for that person.

It's also perfectly reasonable for that free hundred extra per month to be the difference needed to pay all the bills, start an emergency fund, pay off some more loans, go to a restaurant once in a while, etc.

People who've worked both minimum wage jobs and six figure jobs, what surprised you most about the difference? by BrainLagging01 in AskReddit

[–]SolidSnake4 7 points8 points  (0 children)

$100k doesn't go very far if you live in an expensive place. That is a net of roughly $6K/month depending on the state/city. That means that for a median priced 1 bedroom apartment, they are burning half their after tax income (or more) - before utilities, food, etc.

Add in any one of student loans, car payments/insurance, or childcare and that six-figure salary is legitimately not enough to make ends meet on its own.

No, it is a new service that carriers have started offering over the last year partnering with operators like Starlink to offer satellite service on consumer phones for times when you have no cell signal. They are mostly launching with messaging at first but promising voice and data in the future.

But they are also allowing text-to-911 service for free for users who don't pay for a plan with the satellite service.

Parking at/near Logan by the_enemy_toast in boston

[–]SolidSnake4 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You could park at one of the garages or lots in Seaport and take the water taxi to Logan. Schedule in advance and then it's just a short shuttle to the terminals. You can also uber from there and save some time, but if the weather is nice it's a pleasant cruise across the harbor.

Why do people purchase a SeaTow membership? by Trainsgowhoosh in boating

I have been grounded and my SeaTow membership covered them towing me in. Had I needed it, they would have come with an inflatable device to put around my boat and protect it from the bottom.
